The format of this book is perfect for those who already know nursing and ER nursing. It is concise and to the point. I used it to prepare for the CEN exam and passed with flying colors. If you like textbooks that are to the point and lack wordiness, this is great one!I have worked in three different ERs and this book is in every ER library. It is a go to resource for evidence based practice, as seen in many ER protocol citations.

Studying for my CEN, I read this prior to buying the ENA CEN review, and I found that this book covered almost all of it. ended up buying the kindle version as well, and end up using it as a reference on my iphone at work in the ER.

Best book for new grads hands down. I have 5 other ER books I bought before this one when I was a new grad but this is the only one I ever needed. I'm Reading through it cover to cover now that I'm studying for my CEN, and I wished I would've read it sooner! It seems like every question I've ever had at work I'm finding the answer to in this book. Chapters are extremely short and concise, giving you details on what the ED RN needs to know about the subject without extraneous information.

This book is good for a quick ER reference when confronted with something you've never seen before and you have a few seconds to review. It's not lengthy or overwhelming so it is practical for on-the-job use. I've done ER nursing for 2 years and I use it everyday.

This is an excellently concise book of the broad subject that is Emergency Nursing. Great Book.I will add that I would recommend the ICU Book as a supplement. This is the quick and dirty, the ICU book has some great detail that benefits an ER Nurses practice.

As a nursing student, this text does a great job of highlighting key concepts with emergency nursing. It gives an overview of emergency nursing then follows with different diagnosis when you will encounter in the Emergency Department. A good resource for any practicing nurse!

Disillusion led him to break with the Party and to pursue a Socialist political and social path. Caught in Paris just before France collapsed into Vichy and German-occupied sections, Koestler was rounded up with other 'undesirable' intellectuals, minor repeat criminals, Jews and so on by a French government that hoped to placate Germany in the interests of avoiding war or of gaining time to prepare for the onslaught. Koestler got to spend 16 months or so incarcerated in Le Vernet, a brutal and brutalizing internment camp kept at a lower level of housing, hygiene, and food sustenance that any Prisoner of War camp. This was France's own shameful version of Germany's camps: the same in every way except for the planned extermination of its prisoners. Later the camp was handed over to the German Gestapo by the Vichy Government.America has Guantanamo Bay: so Koestler's work is a timeless reminder and a timeless warning to every society of just how 'Liberte, Egalite; Fraternite' or 'Equal Justice For All' can be compromised by political expediency and citizen indifference or complicity. The author puts us into a straw lined bunk and takes us out for forced labor and shows us starvation and beatings in this, his first novel written in English. It is a suitable introduction to the experience that enabled him to write his enduring classic: 'Darkness at Noon.'

An excellent book – I can recommend it as probably the most frightful one among other honest mirrors of the XX century. No doubts, Orwell is quite frightful too, but, at least, his world is just a would-be fantasy, while "Scum of the Earth" is reality itself. And it wouldn't be that hopeless reality if it would be limited to France-1940 only (though a loathsome picture of even one ex-great nation's total final corruption is tragic enough, of course). Unfortunately, the reality-2013 is much more sinister, because the past seven decades show that the same cancer of moral degradation is eagerly devouring now all the Western world, from the USA to Australia. Koestler's quote from Maeterlinck’s "Life of the Termites" is so eloquent in showing the present-day utter luck of freedom's support (to tell nothing about the elementary human dignity's support) anywhere, be it state institutes, media, church or family bonds: "…A planter enters his house after an absence of five or six days; everything is apparently as he left it, nothing seems changed. He sits down on a chair, it collapses. He grabs the table to regain his balance, it falls to pieces under his hands. He leans against the central pillar, which gives way and brings down the roof in a cloud of dust". Exactly so – there is no more firm support around us, indeed! The termites have turned into dust all the former defenses of the free society, and (that's probably the worst thing of them all) it's we, it's we ourselves and nobody else, who permitted this overwhelming rot, generously inviting all kinds of termites for a free lunch. Mr. Koestler's book was ridiculed or silenced by termites-friends when his honest narrative of France's collapse could still be fruitfully used as a wise lesson. Now it's only the 100%-true prophecy - but, naturally, it doesn't make "Scum of the Earth" less precious even a tiny bit. The book is really magnificent! Rostislav, Saint-Petersburg, Russia.

Koestler is a great writer, the story is sad, because it proves the immense stupidity of the French bureaucracy. It is uplifting because it shows the courage and the moral strength of the antifascists especially the ones who died in their fight against oppression

Koestler's hair-raising account of his internment as a foreign national in France at the outbreak of WWII. While it's widely known how Nazi Germany treated minorities during this time, it's astonishing to find that the xenophobic French, while falling short of a deliberate program of extermination, were detaining people under similar circumstances.Like "Darkness at Noon" this book belongs on the bucket list of all thoughtful readers.

Everyone must read this. If for nothing else, but to understand why it's entitled as it is. My heart is broken and healed.

Was there once a larger corpus of writings from Confucius, and is what we have today distilled from some larger body of work? If so, then I wish we had that entire larger body of philosophical work, the same way we have a good many books from classical Greek philosophers like Plato and Aristotle; but that being said, I certainly am glad that we have the Analects as a distillation of Confucius’ philosophy.His Chinese name was K’ung Fu-tzu, 孔夫子, and the Latinate name that he bears today was probably bestowed by Jesuit missionaries to China in the 16th century. By any name, however, Confucius is a great philosopher who speaks to us today just as clearly as he spoke to the people of Chinese antiquity. He lived a long time ago – when he died in 479 B.C., the Spartan defense of Thermopylae had taken place just one year before – but it is astonishing how current and relevant his words and ideas remain.“Analects” is, of course, a Latin- and Greek-derived term; in Chinese, the book is 論語,the "Lun Yü." It is divided into 20 books, and contains a total of 512 Confucian sayings, most of them quite short. On this re-reading of "The Analects," I encountered some sayings that were already familiar to me: e.g., “To say you know when you know, and to say you do not when you do not, that is knowledge” (II.17, p. 65). Yet on this reading, I learned many things that I found new.Perhaps because I’ve been reading a good deal of classical Greek philosophy lately, I found some striking parallels between Confucius and the Greeks who wrote sometime after him. For instance, when “The Master said, ‘Barbarian tribes with their rulers are inferior to Chinese states without them’” (III.5, p. 67), it made me think of how the ancient Greeks considered any non-Greek-speaking society to be βάρβαροι, barbaroi, barbarians. I found myself thinking of the doomed tragic heroes of ancient Greek drama, men and women brought down by their tragic flaws, when I heard Confucius reflect that “In his errors a man is true to type. Observe the errors and you will know the man” (IV.7, p. 73).Confucius knows that his disciples aspire to government service in the bureaucracy of the Empire – hence the prevalence of sayings in which Columbus offers advice such as, “Do not worry because you have no official position. Worry about your qualifications. Do not worry because no one appreciates your abilities. Seek to be worthy of appreciation” (IV.14, p. 74),Additionally, in an acutely status-conscious society, Confucius’ listeners are very interested in what will help them achieve the distinction of “gentleman.” With considerable focus on the value of benevolence, Confucius suggests that “The gentleman understands what is moral. The small man understands what is profitable” (IV.16, p. 74). And in one of my favorite passages from the Analects, Confucius remarks that “the gentleman hates to dwell downstream for it is there that all that is sordid in the Empire finds its way” (XIX.20, p. 155).Readers who are interested in the Judeo-Christian philosophical and moral tradition may be struck by the ways in which Confucius disagrees with one of the primary moral imperatives of Christianity. In contrast with Lao Tzu, who in the "Tao Te Ching" tells his disciples to “do good to him who has done you an injury”, Confucius says, “What, then, do you repay a good turn with? You repay an injury with straightness, but you repay a good turn with a good turn” (XIV.34, p. 129). In other words, the only thing you owe to someone who has wronged you is straightness, directness, honesty. For Western readers, many of whom have been raised in the tradition of “whosoever shall smite thee on thy right cheek, turn to him the other also” (Matthew 5:39), this may be the most challenging passage in the entire "Analects."At the same time, Confucianism invokes the Golden Rule in a way similar to all the other great moral, philosophical, and religious systems of the world. In response to a disciple’s asking, “Is there a single word which can be a guide to conduct throughout one’s life?”, Confucius replies, “Do not impose on others what you yourself do not desire” (XV.24, p. 135).Perhaps because it is the dawn of a presidential election year here in the United States of America, I found that I was particularly interested in one particular example of Confucius’ advice to his disciples: “Be sure to go carefully into the case of the man who is disliked by the multitude. Be sure to go carefully into the case of the man who is liked by the multitude” (XV.28, p. 136). Good advice in the state of Lu during the Zhou dynasty, and good advice in any modern nation nowadays.I had this edition of "The Analects" with me when my wife and I were traveling in Beijing, home of the second largest Confucian temple in the world. Walking in the Forbidden City, my copy of "The Analects" in my jacket pocket, I wondered how many readers, imperial or otherwise, referred to their own copy of this book while traveling between and among the buildings of this most impressive city-within-a-city.This edition of "The Analects" includes a glossary of names and places mentioned in the book, an appendix on events in the life of Confucius, a textual history of the book, and a chronology of Confucius’ life. Particularly helpful is another appendix, one that describes the characters of the different disciples with whom Confucius speaks in the Analects. For readers of Confucius’ time, and indeed for followers of Confucianism nowadays, the differences in character among disciples like Tzu-kung, Tzu-lu, and Yen Yüan would be as self-evident as the differences in personality that Christians see among Saint Peter, Saint John, and Saint Thomas in the New Testament. This Penguin Books edition of Confucius’ "Analects" is a very fine way to acquaint, or reacquaint, oneself with one of the most important books ever written.

I own the Oxford World's Classics edition translated by Raymond Dawson.This was my first reading of 'The Analects' and while it was not quite what I expected, as it does not contain a truly coherent philosophy or even a consistent mode of presentation or authorship, it was nevertheless an incredibly rewarding study. And I say study rather than read because while it is quite brief (82 pages) there are a wealth of "chapters" that will leave you pondering--in a good way! If you are worried about the stereotype of vaguess and aloofness in Chinese sages, you needn't fear 'The Analects'. The main thing that can obscure some of the "chapters" is their reliance on Chinese history and most of these are briefly cleared up in Dawon's notes. 'The Analects' can be picked up and put down at a whim due to the informal structure and you will never feel that you lost the flow of it should a few days pass between readings.While I can't compare it to another translation or the Chinese, I found Dawson's translation to be very smooth and highly consistent throughout, and he supplements the introduction with helpful notes on his translation of key terms. This is an edition primarily for the newcomer rather than the scholar (not to say it is in anyway "dumbed down") as it is wonderfully concise in its introduction and notes, never saying more than needs to be said. However, in my case, I certainly wouldn't have minded more scholarship and context. Dawson uses Pinyin rather than Wade-Giles, which is a welcome shift in my eyes, as Wade-Giles often feels overwrought even if it sometimes comes closer to the true pronunciation, and there is a nifty conversion chart included in this edition.This edition like all of the newer Oxford World's Classics is neatly designed with a beautiful cover and good quality paper.

Upon receiving the book i was astonished by the size of the publication,and thought to myself how and what could possibly fill such a tome.However once i started reading i could see the reason for such a large book.Starting off with the Tianamen Square episode and then proceeding through the history of VOA,and various other consequences in history the stories are well told in great detail.I found this book to be an excellent record of what VOA really stands for in the world outside of USA.To the rest of the world the book carries the message of reliability and truthfulness.This book truly is America,it truly is the Voice Of America.It is both a history and historical record of America.There are a few photographs included portraying some of the key people and places,but this does not detract from the main purpose of the prose contained within.

Alan Heil has given us the story of the Voice of America, the US Government's international radio stations, from the perspective of one of its longest-serving employees. Mr. Heil started with VOA in New York, and moved with them to Washington, DC in the 1950s. He tells the stories of the broadcasters and broadcasts as only someone on the inside can. This is a must read for anyone interested in International Broadcasting or American policy.

We are using Voice of America A History to assist us in producing a Broadway musical ("voice") created byPaxton Farrar (student at NYU and playwright). Though the musical is staged in the late 40's all of theinformation about VOA for the decades discussed in Heil's book was tremendously useful in understandingthe dedication to the Charter and to journalistic truth. Voice of America is as important to listenersall of over the world today as it was to the post WWII years. Alan Heil did an incredible job ofcapturing the life stories of those involved with VOA and those dependent on it for truth aboutthe value of people and their quest for freedom. Bravo!

Alan Heil has written a highly-readable book with excellent documentation. His keen insight into origin and development of the Voice of America was reflected in his writing -- and his numerous examples of VOA's impact upon foreign audiences was compelling. His front-row seat to the continuing challenges to VOA independence (and its integrity) make this a "must read" for any student of international communication and public diplomacy. Readers may not like the conclusions at the end of the book, but -- like the Voice itself over most of its years -- they are credible and "straight."

This book is very enjoyable reading. It's like a memoir or autobiography of Voice of America, definitely not a stuffy academic work.

Blew me away!!! First off I hate, hate, hate writing reviews. But this absolutely needed a 5 star review. If I could had a choice of giving a greater value star wise, I would have. This book goes so in depth on every possible article of clothing, accessories, and much more in the vintage world. From selling on E-Bay, to bidding websites (Some I never even knew of), to vintage names, and the best vintage websites to go shopping at (which I will be visiting). I can't express the details of this book. I could go on for days. It is is a must buy if you like vintage clothing, sewing vintage patterns, like vintage fabric or housewares. The list is endless. You will not be disappointed. I was pleasantly surprised!!!
