The book itself is poorly constructed and the adhesive holding the pages to the binding cover melted and the pages started coming out within three days of warm weather.This was last updated in 2009 and really the book needs to be updated or stop selling it or sell it at a reduced price with a hazard warning included saying that much of the information is out of date. Mexico is changing rapidly and many of the roads have changed and certainly some destinations have changed. the camping spots just south of Playa Del carmen have either been developed or access gone, the access to Calakmul is different and there is no restaurant etc. Mike Church, you could start asking travelers to update it for you?

I like the explanations of the cities/regions and the descriptions of the parks, though some are a bit outdated, that's to be expected given the reality that it can only be updated so often. Our friends had this book while we traveled around Baja for 3 months together, so when we headed to the mainland I decided we needed a copy of our own! Works best as a supplement to sites like campendium.com and the iOverlander app.

This volume of the Travelers Guide to Camping in Mexico did a more than satisfactory job describing Mexico's variety of campgrounds and best routes for getting to them. The guide also does a more than adequate job providing travellers with basic travel protocols and helpful toned-down travel advisories to campers who wish to explore Mexico with an RV or Tent--although the latter, less so.The only reason I didn't give the guide 5 stars is becauseI am a loyal devotee of the Peoples Guide to Mexico which i started reading in tbe 1970's!

I heard Mike and Terri speak at a FMCA rally seminar and decided to buy some of their books. Of oourse Amazon has better prices than they do...????The books are very, very helpful if you are going to Mx in a RV/Motorhome. All of the RV parks know this book and if they get a positive review, they advertise it. That must put some pressure on the Churchs?The books are easy to use and fairly accurate but be sure to check their website for the latest info because things change and they do make mistakes. Big Bend NP is not in NM... The use of Pemex stations as landmarks is very clever and helpful since they are all numbered and the numbers are so prominent.

We just traveled through Belize and the Yucatan and we used this book to stay in a few campgrounds, which worked out great! There were a few places that no longer existed, and the website that the book refers to is no longer active either. My biggest complaint about the book though is the cover and binding. It is a very thin cover with a thin plastic layer and being a traveling book they get a lot of wear and tear. After just a few days the book started to curl up on both the front and back and now it is impossible to un-curl. I have had my other Mexico traveling book for a couple of years and it still looks great... and they were side by side on this trip.

Book, for me personally, was less than worthless. The three camp sites were either not there or didnt allow cars. Kinda important to know on a roadtrip. Others msy find value as I believe the authors did their best.

This book is mostly a big list of RV parks. This is probably very useful to those traveling by RV (or car campers who don't mind RV parks I suppose) but most tent campers won't find much value here. There is some good info on border crossing formalities but that info is also available on sites like drivetheamericas.com.I ordered the book based on the reviews here as well as the "or Tent" part of the title but I'm pretty disappointed.I won't be bringing it with me on my trip. Since I don't need electricity or dump stations I'm just going to find places to camp as I go.

Where Telushkin’s best-seller “Rebbe” ends, this book begins. The Secret of Chabad is the story of the men and women who have made Chabad the largest Jewish movement in the world. It’s compelling reading by a master storyteller with many stories have never been told before.The book opens with an hour-by-hour account of the tragic terror attack in Mumbai. Beautifully told but very sad. Other chapters cover the daring escapes of Chabad leaders and followers out of the fire of WWII and Communist Russia. The book reveals the clandestine Chabad networks that kept Judaism alive in the former USSR, the same networks the Mossad would later rely upon. The book has an entire chapter on “The Menorah Wars”, the decades long fight in the US to hold public Chanukah celebrations. Another chapter discusses the Chabad rabbi as entrepreneur, the sink-or-swim financial situations that consistently demand their time and attention.If you ever wondered what compels a 28-year-old rabbi to decide to raise a family and spend the rest of his life in Siberia, Nepal, or Montana, this is the book to read.

This is one of the best books I’ve read in a while. Pacey writing. Fascinating history. Great life lessons. Useful in conversations. Highly recommend. No doubt, the book is biased toward Chabad. If I were so inclined, I could find lots of books and articles critical of the movement. That said, I’d rather take away key life-enhancing lessons and messages. My favorite chapters are “Gabie and Rivkie” recounting terrorist attacks on the Chabad house in Mumbai, “The Menorah Wars” discussing Chabad’s interaction with American Jews in the 2nd half of the 20th century, “Dancing with the KGB” which discusses Chabad’s role in the USSR, and “Every Shliach Is an Entrepreneur”.I was hooked by the end of chapter 1. The author, a Chabad insider working in California, tells the story of the 2008 terrorist attack on Mumbai’s Chabad House. The writing is journalistic and compelling, introducing readers to the characters who become Chabad shluchim, the Chabad global family turning out for a tragic funeral, and Chabad’s global influence/organization as the “Chabad Command Center” often had better information that US, Indian, or Israeli authorities attempting to rescues hostages.What is Chabad? We think of Chabad today as a worldwide Jewish movement enabling travellers to get a Kosher meal and maintaining Jewish communities around the world. It has been, and remains spectacularly successful in bring Jews to Judiasm. The book documents in far more detail the ideological elements of the movement. I like the characterization attributed to Moshe Feller (Minnesota in 1952) “In Torah Vodaath [more traditional] it was ‘us’ and ‘them’. The small yeshiva world was ‘us’ and the rest of the community was ‘them’. In Chabad Lubavich, all Jews were ‘us’. … but first you must attend a farbrengen” (page 98). The fabrengen is a free-flowing combination of song, learning, and inspiration hosted by Chabad Rabbis and leaders.Philosophically, I take away (i) consistency of message, (ii) a focus on individual Jewish souls, and (iii) spiritual pursuits rather than purely academic. … “the Rebbe told young people ‘you can change the world…you can do something that has cosmic implications’” (119). “When a young man goes off to a classical style Lithuanian-style yeshiva in Israel or the US, he will be told … that his greatest inspiration is to become a great Torah scholar. … In Chabad yeshivas, this attitude is frowned upon. The purpose of learning is to become closer to G-d by studying torah. Aspiring to be great could be driven by ego.” (273)The lessons of this book go far beyond Jewish thought. The Rebbes are business geniuses with scalable lessons across commercial enterprises. The 7th Rebbe taught the value of thinking BIG, developing a vision that drove Chabad to the ends of the Earth. He didn’t micro-manage, rather leaving his delegates to identify and address local problems within the context of broader goals and approaches. He embraced the free market, forcing the shluchim to program within their own budgets and fund-raise largely independently. Ultimately, the fact that the organization remains so strong without a living Rebbe is a testament to its staying power. For what its worth, Chabad also does pretty well on real estate, moving into neighborhoods, making them more attractive places to live, and therefore owning relatively valuable property.Within American Jewry, Chabad has certainly faced its challenges. I was shocked to learn that the giant menoras that we see today in city centers and even on top of minivans only date back to the 1980’s. The book details Chabad’s challenges from both left and right. The left primarily feared loss of funding among finite resources from the likes of Jewish Federation and Birthright Israel. In the early days Chabad camps and schools, for example, received far less funding per child than other groups. In addition, the left feared mingling of religion/state (like menorahs in public squares) for fear that public schools would use this to justify becoming increasingly Christian in practice. The right also had concerns. They feared Chabad was making it “too easy” to participate. “Celebrating a bar or bat mitzvah in synagogue should require preparation and serious training” (174). There was also a financial motive with other traditional synagogues afraid of losing paying members.Chabad also has profound global influence. Benjamin Netanyahu quoted the Rebbe at the UN in 2011 (252). George W Bush credited Chabad for amazing work after Hurricane Katrina. When Golda Meir and Mossad wanted better access to Russia and better understanding of Russian Jews trapped behind the iron curtain, they found “a clandestine Jewish network already in place, directed by the Rebbe in Brooklyn.” (189) The book spends a lot of pages as well on the detailed history of Chabad in Russia, escaping in the early 1900’s and setting up in Brooklyn. Personally, there was a bit too much detail to keep me interested but the core message is powerful: “Shaped by years of battle against the Soviets, Chabad policy was not to retreat when faced with pressure” (139).The shlochim are fascinating in themselves. They move as young married couples far from family in exchange for the opportunity to change the world one Jew at a time. They often struggle to find funding, schools for their children and Kosher meat for their tables. Yet, the (almost always) persevere and succeed. Sometimes, they get creative (internet learning for the kids). Sometimes they get lucky (finding an unlikely patron). In any case, the numbers speak for themselves. From zero after WWII, there were 1242 shluchim couples in the world by 1994. By 2004, it was 2,097 with demand for placements far outstripping viable communities.Bottom-line: Read this book.

Rabbi David Eliezrie's book, "The Secret of Chabad", is a very important resource for anyone interested in Judaism. It is easy to read, filled with stories and anecdotes, yet delves into deep philosophic and religious issues while providing a thorough history and background to the Chabad movement. Eliezrie explains how many Hasidic groups pursue what they consider to be their holy purpose by turning inward, protecting themselves from outside influences, in contrast to Chabad’s philosophy that holiness is pursued by turning outward, so that G-d’s light is spread throughout the world. He explains the relationship of Jews with Israel in a unique way, noting that “the diasporic state of the Jewish people, is not just a physical removal of the Jews from their land, but a spiritual one.” In the 20th Century, Zionism has addressed the bridging of the physical diaspora, but not the spiritual diaspora. The bridging of the latter chasm has been at the core of Chabad’s mission. This is pursued by Chabad, one Jew at a time, one mitzvah at a time, with the expectation that each little step increases the holiness of our material world, enhances the recognition of G-d’s presence, and hastens the coming of Moshiach and redemption. Because any movement closer to G-d makes a difference in our world, Chabad never gives up on a Jew, He cites author Yossi Klein Halevi for reasons why Chabad seems to be viewed positively, even by those Israelis who resent religious Jews. Among the reasons given by Halevi is that Chabad has the courage to confront the real issues, including the transformation of the Jewish world in the last century by four upheavals: the Holocaust, seventy years of Communism, Zionism, and the emergence of a self-confident American Jewish community. Eliezrie also explains the difference between the classical Lithuanian type yeshiva where the prime object is to become a Gadol (great scholar of Torah) versus Chabad’s prime object to learn Torah in order to form a spiritual bond with G-d. How this came about, and how Chabad has grown into what Rabbi Eliezrie describes as “the world’s most successful Jewish movement” is all part of the secret of Chabad, revealed in an intriguing, captivating way by Eliezrie’s delightful book.

I used to be a very cynical people and a Fatalist view at that but after reading this book? My overall perspectives in this life completely changed thanks to Ms. betty J. Eadie and what she went through. I have always believed in a Higher power but now I'm assured on how that Supreme Divine Being ALL LOVED US regardless if we succeed in this life or not. This book will give you hope and the reasons WHY bad things happen to good people and why our sufferings has actually have meaning and lessons associated with them. "In order for you to be good? First, you MUST be kind. In order for you to be kind? You MUST KNOW suffering"- an Immortal quote and living testimony from someone very dear to my heart and makes me cry every time and nothing but the truth. I just cant tell all the stuff I have learned by reading this book WITHOUT spoiling it for you so it's better for you to read this book with an Open Mind specially when there's a Holy Bible around for it will open MORE doors of understandings. PLEASE don't delay this for your personal salvation is found in this book. This book WILL change your life....It DID mine. :)

This book helped ease the pain of loosing a loved one. I've read this book several times and I can't say enough about it. The first time I read it twice. The next time I had lost my father, cousin, aunt, sister and my pet of 10 years all within 1 year, and the last time I lost my niece, aunt, cousin, my best friend of 30 years, and my other niece had cancer - all in 6 months. I'm not having a pity party I just wanted to explain why I read the book so many times - it really helped me with my struggle. I was raised Catholic and the teachings about death never made sense to me. After I read this book the first time I said "Now that's the way I always thought it should be". If you're struggling - read the book - it will lessen your pain. It's not religious - it's just a good book.

A confused Native American Mormon writer. She provides no documentation of actual death. If this story is true, it would be great - save for the fact that even in “heaven” men are in charge and women have different roles due to their “sensitivity”. Do we even experience gender in Spirit? The author states with confidence that there is no reincarnation. Many religions and Mystics disagree. There is more documentation in support of reincarnation than the author’s so called death for 4 hours.

When this book first came out after reading it twice (I always have to read twice to fully appreciate), I read the book within a few days and realized that many people I know could use this book almost as a self help type book and found it so inspirational that the following Christmas I purchased 5 of them to give as gifts. When it. And out in paper I ordered 10 more to handout as I saw fit and have to say most of the people I have it to also found it as inspiring As I did.

My comments on “Embraced By The Light” by Betty Eadie:My path to God is one of a million or more other possible paths. And so is Betty’s path as well. Her path becomes more visible in her description of her Near-Death Experience (NDE). It also shows its unique character. That character also shows us more about her believes, convictions, biases and some of the way she deals with her problems. What stands out are the unprecedented amount of detail in her account, in earthly terms. In my many readings of NDE’s, I have never come across a more detailed account. It tallies well with all other accounts that I have studied, all of which are different and unique but share all major elements of an NDE, the most prevalent being the experience and non-verbal expression of the most encompassing and most powerful element called LOVE, overshadowing all others. Despite the differences between my and Betty’s believes, biases, and convictions, I find her account to be utterly honest and sincere!

This book received some controversy back in the 80's or 90's. The story is that many who read it ended up preaching it's contents at church. Since this book is Betty's personal experience, it was never a good idea to preach it at church like it's doctrine - or even to personally endorse everything in it. This is an awesome book and I see it as food for thought or more data points in my research of what lies beyond this life. I would recommend reading it and just mulling over the info for your own personal gain. To preach it like it's new scripture is probably not the best idea. That goes for any NDE book. This is why most people who have had NDE's shy away from writing about it. It's personal and the general public will scrutinize it or wholly endorse it when they shouldn't. It's meant to just give us more data points in our search for knowledge. Some info may be spot on and other info may be meant symbolical and not real at all. Read this book with that in mind. I do recommend it though. This is a very good book!

Wonderful book. Great details about Betty's experiences in the the higher worlds of heaven, our true home. It gave me much hope and comfort that all of us will be going home after we finally shed our physical bodies. Our lives on earth are incredibly short and are just a school to learn lessons that only can be learned while in a physical body on earth. And that heaven is real and is an unimaginable place of beauty, bliss, adventure and awe that words just can't describe. That we are all going there as soul - sinners, saints, drunks, bums, rich and powerful people, religious people, spiritual people, atheists, criminals, etc. the only ones that judge us there are ourselves. There is no hell; no place of eternal damnation; what a relief! The best thing and really the only things that really matter here are that we love others unconditionally, kindness to others, and our good deeds as in helping others.

Ironically too, Richard is/was a refugee of sorts—from the GDR or the East—who had to be integrated when the Wall falls and the West was triumphant.So begins a meditation on what it is to be German, but more importantly, what it means to be human. The author stirs personal memories of life in the GDR and national memories of the Holocaust--that time when Germany failed so conspicuously to welcome the stranger. Today the clash is not religionist but cultural, the Rationalist v. The Islamist--the sceptic v. the believer. It is a tribute to Erpenbeck’s skill as a storyteller that as the refugees tell their tales, Go, Went, Gone never bogs down in political “reportage”. The protagonists’ immediate plight are all unique in their way--heartrending predicaments. Rufu the loner, away from home and utterly friendless, even among fellow refugees. Arwad from Nigeria, who at home could never stay more than one night. They were too poor—there was never enough room, there was never enough food. The reader realizes this is not an of inventory of the material but a human lamentation—the very best times of in his life were characterized by want, without even space enough to remain together. It is a hardship incomprehensible to Westerners who have trouble tearing themselves away from their smart phones to engage those across a dinner table. And the gut-wrenching journey of Rashid whose two children drown when their boat capsizes, literally with the cliffs of Italy in sight. Travelers trapped in a modern-day Scylla and Charybdis. This is irony careening into tragedy. Literature, like history, repeats itself.From her immediate vantage point, Erpenbeck gazes backward, imagining the historical migration of those from the Caucuses, across the Middle East and Sahara, scores of generations later completing almost a perfect circle. The wars that displace refugees is a modern Illiad. The journey of Africans to Italy, Germany and perhaps beyond is an Odyssee as fantastic and culturally shocking to these men as the journey was to the Greek's wiliest hero. The experiences build becoming more than cultural stories, Richard's engagement and kindnesses become human touchstones. "Never before has the connection between space, time and words revealed itself to him so clearly as at this moment. The backdrop of the desert shows it off in sharp relief, but really it's always been just the same all over the world: without memory, man is nothing more than a bit of flesh on the planet's surface." In an eerie parallel, the government solution is to transport the refugees (with Germans complaining of the cost) to an out-of-sight location. Richard wonders if "this nation of bookkeepers" calculated the cost of transport in the 1940s as well.The author is never scolding, and always generous but also steely-eyed. Erpenbeck sees the refugees impossible quandary: "denying them permission to work while at the same time reproaching them for idleness." She is realistic though in her assertion that Hope may be in great abundance, but it is not enough to sustain us and after years of frustration some dare not even be able to muster its pitiful consolations. When hosting their German friend, Africans pile his plate high with food they deny themselves. Why? "if you eat too much you can become like an infant...too spoiled...you can never know what is coming...and you have to be able to endure that." Go, Went, Gone makes clear this life is a crapshoot with each of us undeserving of our lot whether it is a fortunate or a miserable one. Erpenbeck constantly returns to this and the themes of shared humanity and responsibility. Differences such language, skin color, and religion fall away in shared car rides, meals or piano lessons at Richard's home. Go, Went, Gone is a profoundly affecting and deeply moving story that couldn’t possibly be more timely or more relevant. It needs to be experienced—particularly by our Dear Leader.One of the best books I’ve read in 2017.

I love this book. It's my favorite of the year, and as a retired English professor, I read all the time. Every word is beautifully written (and translated). Each day I couldn't wait to get back to Richard and his heart-breaking, delightful, inspired group of African refugees. This novel is political, poetical, funny, philosophical, and just plain wonderful from beginning to end. Some friends will be receiving this one for Christmas!

Each African immigrant has a distinct voice and history, plus a sad future. The central character, Richard, slowly moves into their lives, a witness to the Byzantine chains of the laws that keep the immigrants from making a life. His life and work are interspersed with the stories of the engaging but victimized Africans. Erpenbeck is an excellent writer, who makes this all-too-true story about refugees throb with life. It has special meaning for Americans, although it is set in Germany and plays against the atrocities of WW II.

This book was written to depict the sad fate of African migrants who make their way to Germany after first landing in Italy - because of German rules their situation is precarious since their port of entry was not in Germany. Their humanity is celebrated, as is that of the recently retired German professor who befriends them and tries to help. The migrants are very much individuals, and the professor’s circle of friends are also important to the story. It takes some pages for the novel to hit its stride and there are some elements which did not contribute much for me: the drowned man in the lake, the professor’s past infidelity.

This is a courageous and imaginative narrative dealing with a current and heartbreaking crisis. Using an ex-professor as the virtual narrator gave depth to the topic, as did his character and his friends situations. The words from the mouths of the refugees were the most powerful part of the narrative.It is hard to imagine that a country with an ex- Nazi and ex-communist history could be held up as standard bearers for compassion for the EU's treatment of the emigrant crisis, and reading this makes me really pessimistic about the fate of others in so many other less tolerant countries.

The book made me reconsider my attitude towards the immigrants from countries ravaged by war or famine. It is very well written, it does show how difficult the lives of the refugees are, but also how difficult to cope it is for the natives of the country which accepts the influx of people from very different cultures.

A well-written book which describes the ongoing problem we have in the world with the refugees coming from Africa. the book sets the story in Berlin Germany with its history of the Nazim and killing of the jews. Now they have to face a different problem. Many refugees arrive from Italy and try to settle and get jobs in Germany. Are they willing to help them or send them away? To where?

Beautifully written and masterfully translated, the allegorical presence of a nameless drowned man at the bottom of a lake (whose presence is revealed within the first pages of the book) serves to connect the current refugee crisis and the various responses to it to the different layers of modern German history of the last hundred years.
