This book comes out of a series that Consumer Guide published. I also have their book on Cars of the Fabulous 50s.The books are a large format with a generous number of pages. There are plenty of color photos and most are close to half-page sized. Some photos are of contemporary show cars, others are vintage publicity or advertising illustrations. They're all nice photos. There are also some color cards that show all the paint colors that were available for that year.The book is organized by year, then by manufacturer (GM, FoMoCo, etc.), and finally by division or marquis. The book isn't 100% comprehensive for each model though they do have information on most models. For example, I noticed a business coupe wasn't shown for one year but they showed one for that brand in a later year.I have a few of these general interest auto books and this would be amongst the better ones because it combines an expanded amount of text along with higher quality illustrations.
I love this series! I've found them to be very accurate (which is not easy when dealing with so many different years/makes/models!). I now have the 40s, 50s, and 60s. Also, the format is very nice. Easy to take an hour with the book, or just a few minutes. You can almost open any page and find something interesting. Thanks for all your work; for all your research! Dave (in Colorado)
This book delivers exactly what a general reference should- well organized photos and data, (including color "chips") plus a thumbnail history for a decade of American cars, year by year, maker by maker.The photos and layout are a feast for the eyes. This is a great book to browse, as well as a handy reference and car spotter's guide.The paper quality seems a bit thin, and the metallic dust jacket is prone to scuffing. Take care with it, because it will quickly look like a used book if not handled carefully. The recently done illustrations by Frank Peiler are a bit crude compared to the vintage advertising illustrations, but they are only for chapter headings.Overall the quality of presentation and info is 5 star. I know I will get both an education and a lot of browsing enjoyment from this book.

Arguably no decade in the development of the automobiles of the United States is as important as the 1940's. From the relatively conservative models of the barely two years prior to World War II during which production was suspended with all companies producing various types of war material, to the imaginative and advanced designs that commenced flowing from Detroit after the War's end and in the last years of the decade, many preambles to the automobiles that we drive today came from this important period.
Mostly well researched and well written. Glosses over the war years, as if no automobile manufacturing took place.
Great book
I received the book in essentially perfect condition except the binding was loose.A friend who is a printer used glue to reattach it and it is once again like new. The seller were very polite and mailed it promptly.I am a collector and a car buff, but I was unaware of the many innovations of the 1940's (power windows etc.) Of great interest was the independent manufactures which were way ahead on the Big 3 manufactures in modernizing cars of the late 1940's
