First of all let me say that I think the book is very good on overall concepts, and secondly that I have not finished the entire book yet so I will update my review in a day or two when I finish it. I greatly enjoyed Al's discussion of technical analysis and his detailed explanation of looking for trades. I do need to point out a couple of what I consider rather serious shortcomings that I have found so far. Firstly he gives the butterfly strategy rather short shrift in only looking at a 1 strike wide butterfly. If a larger width is used then one has the opportunity to "harvest" the embedded "baby butterflies" or "unseen verticals" as well as moving the verticals around to "harvest" them or reduce risk. Unless he does it later he does not mention asymmetrical configurations either. Secondly in his discussion of short put versus long stock, he makes a very serious lapse in my opinion when he outlines the P/L at expiration of the two strategies. Although he is most certainly completely aware of this, he should have mentioned the P/L of a quick drop in the underlying and an increase in implied volatility that would probably easily triple the value of that $1.00 put he was discussing. True if you are prepared to take the stock (which you should be) then this might not be that important, but it is not a good feeling seeing a large drop in your P/L and if you are not sized correctly could be rather devastating. This is why personally I prefer some kind of exposure to long options as well as short puts for example. As this will generally give me at least "one more option" (pun intended) as to making some kind of a strategic move if I need to as my outlook on volatility or the underlying may change over time as I am frequently wrong on my initial assumptions (more than I would like for sure). I'll update this review if needed when I finish the book but overall I highly recommend Mr Sherbin's book and thank him for his contribution to the options literature. I am really enjoying the read. Having finished the book now I also have to upgrade my rating to five stars

Received Al's book in March and began putting on trades within a week of reading. Results speak loudest....24 winners versus 3 losers applying Al's concepts so far.I have benefited by hearing Al speak to small groups twice before the book publication. To use his approach, you need a trading platform that allows the adding of custom studies to your charts. I'm pretty certain I use the same trading platform as Al based on his in-person small group meeting presentations (thinkorswim by T.D. Ameritrade). These custom scripts can be gotten on various message boards for free so don't let this issue stop you from reading this book.Al's approach is heavily probability based so he spends a lot of time in his book explaining this and then he demonstrates how to apply this probability approach to selecting good trades. Almost all of my trades have been "defined risk" except for a couple short puts. I'm mentioning this to let you know this book is definitely for beginners as well as those more experienced. I look forward to employing some "earnings trade" concepts but I have purposely started slow to make sure I understand the content in this book.I'm confident this book will become a Classic. It is so well written and directed at those really wanting to learn and profit from trading options.Update June 20, 2015: May 2015 results finished 24 wins, 8 losses and June 2015 results finished 22 wins, 3 losses......this book is a strong buy.

I've been learning and trading options for close to five years, beginning with two years of extensive option, future and self directed investment education from the leading company in the industry, and two years filling my trading day with a popular internet trading network. Profitable yes, organized and systematic in my trading, no. I had been waiting for the in-depth and thought provoking guidance that is presented so clearly written in this fantastic book. I am going to follow through with the processes laid out in this book for a much firmer understanding of what I am attempting to accomplish with my trading day in and day out. So much more than "trade small and trade often". How about "trade smart and trade profitable". Excited to build my profitable trading routine with the accompanying website too.great value!!!!

It's humorous to me how those of us who buy Al's Sherbin's book get to critique what he has written and he has deemed important in order to trade options successfully. (especially when considering his decades of experience and impeccable career...read the bottom lines on the back of the book!) This guy has been steadily successful for decades-who cares what I think? So for those who may hesitate before buying this book I offer the following: This book contains information that other options trading books have never covered. The chapter on "Portfolio Management" is worth it's weight in gold! Al Sherbin presents concepts and trades that are probably a bit more advanced than a new trader would realize even exists- but those trades are fully explained in detail and completely understandable. The concepts, the trades, the emphasis on exactly how to Identify, Analyze and then Execute options trades make this book a must have. As another reviewer has said: "....an Instant Classic"...

Amazon.com Review

The recurring metaphor in The Inmates are Running the Asylum is that of the dancing bear--the circus bear that shuffles clumsily for the amusement of the audience. Such bears, says author Alan Cooper, don't dance well, as everyone at the circus can see. What amazes the crowd is that the bear dances at all. Cooper argues that technology (videocassette recorders, car alarms, most software applications for personal computers) consists largely of dancing bears--pieces that work, but not at all well. He goes on to say that this is more often than not the fault of poorly designed user interfaces, and he makes a good argument that way too many devices (perhaps as a result of the designers' subconscious wish to bully the people who tormented them as children) ask too much of their users. Too many systems (like the famous unprogrammable VCR) make their users feel stupid when they can't get the job done. Cooper, who designed Visual Basic (the programming environment Microsoft promotes for the purpose of creating good user interfaces), indulges in too much name-dropping and self-congratulation (Cooper attributes the quote, "How did you do that?" to Microsoft chairman Bill Gates, upon looking at one of Cooper's creations)--but this appears to be de rigueur in books about the software industry. But those asides are minor. More valuable is the discourse about software design and implementation ("[O]bject orientation divides the 1000-brick tower into 10 100-brick towers."). Read this book for an idea of what's wrong with UI design. --David Wall Topics covered: User interfaces--good ones and bad ones--and where they come from. Also, how to improve the ones you create.

Imagine, at a terrifyingly aggressive rate, everything you regularly use is being equipped with computer technology. Think about your phone, cameras, cars-everything-being automated and programmed by people who in their rush to accept the many benefits of the silicon chip, have abdicated their responsibility to make these products easy to use. "The Inmates Are Running the Asylum" argues that the business executives who make the decisions to develop these products are not the ones in control of the technology used to create them. Insightful and entertaining, "The Inmates Are Running the Asylum" uses the author's experiences in corporate America to illustrate how talented people continuously design bad software-based products and why we need technology to work the way average people think. Somewhere out there is a happy medium that makes these types of products both user and bottom-line friendly; this book discusses why we need to quickly find that medium.

While I agree with many things Alan Cooper says about the challenges of designing user friendly technologies for normal end users, I think his attitude is a bit pessimistic about how engineers and programmers design technologies that are yet to come... I think it is better to encourage Universities and Colleges to require a certain amount of technical support and customer support courses in additional to standard social sciences courses required for a typical science major for Engineering and computer science students to graduate... This should also be required for any student who hopes to get into any field of study where work in this field would affect end users of products and services rendered to them. Engineers and Technical workers need to take responsibility for their work and help end users with their products. Furthermore, licensing for Engineers and Technical workers should not only require ability to design products and technologies (i.e. traditional assessment materials), but also require ability to communicate effectively with end users and support their products and technologies. This might be a great book for young students in high school and college who want to study Engineering, IT Services, Computer Sciences or related fields.

Cooper has done a good job of pointing out common problems in software design. The book is well written, with interesting examples and anecdotes to illustrate the author's points. While most of the book focuses on "off the shelf" products, I think the author's arguments are even more relevant to custom software development. If you already believe that software is poorly designed, this book is unlikely to be a revalation to you. It will, however, give you some ammunition to use in discussions with "apologists".I agree with the earlier reviewer, who said that the people most needing to read it probably won't. This would seem to be a great book for development managers and purchasers of software, but I think the only people likely to read the whole thing are professional developers.I have two criticisms of the book (for which I give it 4 out of 5 stars): too often it comes across as an advertisement for the author's company; and I would have appreciated more "how-to" information. To this latter point, the author himself says in his preface that he had intended to write a "how-to" book, but was talked into writing a "business case" book instead. I hope that he will soon follow up this effort with the planned "how-to" book.A final question -- what is with these 1 star reviews? I've read a few of them now, for different books, and I have to question whether the reviewer has even read the book. If so, they seem to have completely missed the point. At the very least, if giving a 1 star review, please provide some detailed criticisms so I can decide whether I am likely to share your opinion.

From a software engineer's perspective, this book is fairly on point. However, it does come off a bit as an extended personal rant against engineers involved in the design of devices and systems the author has interacted with and only provides perfunctory guidance on how to improve things. Suggested read from an HCI professor, it makes a point but isn't as informative as one would hope.

This was a textbook for my Interaction Design class, but the ideas are valid in boat loads of circumstances. I highly recommend it to everyone, in fact, not just programmers and designers. While you're at it, be sure to pick up The Paradox of Choice: Why More Is Less, which solidifies his ideas from the consumer side of things.I'm a junior high teacher by trade, so I'm going to particularly recommend it to teachers. Students, just like tech consumers, come in a variety of levels of understanding. One of the biggest challenges is to cater a lesson to smart students, slow students, and all the students in between. Teachers, like programmers, like all of us, tend to assume that others' experience is similar to their own, so they plan with themselves in mind. This book helps explain how to break out of that mentality and design for everyone.

I like Alan Cooper. He is entertaining, thoughtful and has numerous amusing anecdotes and analogies. He is a "voice sounding in the wilderness" in the software community about usability. Unfortunately, I think his point is lost somewhat in the marketing message and sensationalism of this book. Who is the book written for - the software developer or the frustrated user? The first chapter sounds like a Luddite rebellion against computers. It is hard to imagine the person writing that chapter as a computer professional. Using the analogy of a secretary who doesn't know how to save files to a folder as an example of poor design is blaming the programmer for poor training. True, software is often developed by programmers who barely get real requirements, develop in a vacuum and then force feed the end result to the user. And ironically, Alan Cooper invented Visual Basic, which ushered in Rapid Application Development (RAD) programming (good!) but adds the tendency for quick prototype demos to get shipped as "Version 1.0" because the CEO or CIO says,"hey it works now" (bad!).These shortcomings are not solved by adding a layer of another design person partially disconnected from the user, or making the screen prettier. It is by adapting the Extreme Programming/Agile programming methods of including the user in everything from design to testing, so the software reflects how the user does business.I still liked the book, just not clear on the message.

The book contains the bare-bone outline of what you would need to pass the exam. It is surely not enough if you did not have any prior knowledge on the exam topics. The greatest disadvantage as with all other Mr. Morris' preparation guides is complete absence of control questions and tasks. The text is poorly edited, and large chunks of it are just excerpts from respective section of Oracle documentation, sometimes with slight re-wording, sometimes plain copies. On the positive side is that the job of Oracle docs compilation is done for you. It would be much better if the author included references, or at least Oracle document titles. The other positive feature is the book's brevity, but depending on your level and attitude it might be a deficiency as well. All in all what you paid is what you get - the main thing is to understand that this is preparation GUIDE, not the book covering 150% of information you need. For me it worked

Excellent. I fully endorse the existing feedback "This book is a Clear and Straight forward guide for this exam with good and simple examples to try out." and this is true for all the study guides written by Matthew M Morris.

This book is concise. The examples are easy to understand. Do the exercises. I find it extremely helpful for my certification study.

Good summary and highlighting of the main subjects for the exam; studying Oracle documentation is required in parallel with the book.

great book, easy to read and follow.

Not as helpful as i thought it would be.. But anyway for 11$ its a good guide :) Got 85% for my exam.

Husband likes them!

I purchased this book few months back, but attended the test only yesterday. My feedback about the book is that, this book alone is not sufficient to pass the exam. Because I got many questions that touched the more inner details of a topic, which this book did not cover. With a 160 odd pages book, this is what you can expect. The best way to prepare if you want to buy this book is, take each explanation from each topic and work them out yourself (as there are very few examples on each topic) and also please refer some other books like "Oracle Advanced PL/SQL Developer Professional Guide by Saurabh K. Gupta" (this book has more details on each topic, but buying this book alone for the purpose of only passing the exam will mean you will take more time to complete your preparation, as this book has lots of content), that has more examples and details for each topic. Also please dont forget to refer Oracle documentation/Third party sites(given in the book) to get more details (like more options of a command, exceptions, etc).I almost made the mistake of relying on only this book, but was fortunate to stumble upon other books/resources in the web. I just scrapped through, got 73%.

Great book! Unless your a Kings or Duck Fan. Ross McKeon, the author, seems to be a very nice, friendly guy too. IWhen I've seen him at the Sharks games I always express my disappointment that I didn't have his book with me to get it signed and he said I can simply message him on social media and he'd be happy to come down from the media / press room during a game when I have his book with me. "If these walls could talk" is another SJ Sharks books by broadcaster Dan Rusanowski with Ross McKeon. More great stories from their behind the scenes experiences with the team.

There is no chronological order. It is very easy to get turned around with the way the author wrote the book. Although there is a lot of interesting facts and personalized details of the athletes and the experiences in the beginning years.

maybe because I'm not a huge fan. Not impressed with writing style.

Husband really enjoyed the book.

Kids Loved it
