Subatomic Physics (3rd Edition)

Review

Henley and García's presentation and style hold the reader's attention right from the start. The treatment is at just the right level to whet the reader's appetite, slake their thirst for understanding and assess the current `state of the art' ... this is a highly enlightening and up-to-date text, rather ambitious in its scope but successful in its aim to provide a comprehensive and comprehensible pedagogic overview of an exciting field of physics. --Contemporary Physics

In memoriam:Ernest Henley (June 10, 1924 – March 26, 2017)"...was universally respected throughout the field of physics as a man of creativity, honesty and great common sense... ”Finding a less expensive copy of this text, I was compelled to purchase same. A purchase, I might add based upon the Reviews I read on Amazon. I thought something is amiss ! After all, here is an excerpt from the review in Contemporary Physics: "...concepts and terms are brought in at an elementary level with allusion to their later examination in greater depth." (2009, Vol. 50, Nr. 6). Reading that review shows that this text is considered in high regard. Thus, I wondered:Why the disconnect (between professor and student) and discontent (from students) ? Begin with a few observations....(A) While I find this textbook rather interesting, I am unable to ascertain exactly who the readership is intended to be. The entire panoply of undergraduate physics courses needs to be firmly at hand, alongside requisite mathematics.(B) We read Henley and Garcia's reference to Jackson's Classical Electrodynamics text: "...it is beautifully written and provides an exceptionally lucid treatment of classical electrodynamics." Now, if Jackson (as elucidated above) is not to your liking, I rather suspect Henley and Garcia will not be, either.(C) Let us read this footnote: "Many students claim that the best way to solve physics problems in undergraduate courses is the following--list the physical quantities that appear in the problem. Find the equation in the text that contains the same symbols. Insert. Hand-in." (page 293). All I add is this: if that is the way any student solves any problem, then this book of Henley and Garcia is definitely off your list !Now, let us look at the contents of the textbook:(1) The first four chapters assemble the 'tools,'... the detectors and the means by which numbers are arrived at through experiment. These four chapters (fifty pages) should be rather easy to assimilate. Take note: Table 1.11 (page 6) and Equation #1.12, those are your guidelines. If you do not know those few things outright, then no need to look further !(2) The next 100-pages, or so, is a rapid-fire summary of the 'particle zoo' and introduction to quantum chromodynamics. Fourier transformations are assumed known. Dirac's Hole Theory is bypassed for a Stueckelberg-Feynman approach. This approach is to be commended (page 110). Primarily the authors follow a qualitative, semi-technical synopsis.(3) Sixth Chapter: Structure of Subatomic Particles. I like this chapter quite a bit. Scattering (Rutherford, Mott) segues to form factors. Presented is a very nice discussion of leptons as point-particles. Also, a nice qualitative elaboration of integral equations as applied to scattering is presented (pages 176-177).(4) Third Part of the text begins with Symmetries and Conservation Laws. Gauge invariance is here introduced. Angular momentum and isospin arrive on the scene, chapter eight (page 221). Qualitatively described. Following which, PCT, described at a fairly mundane level. Kaon system gets a nice discussion. We read: "Kaons are a wonderful source of surprises." (pages 260-271).(5) Interactions are next. (part four): A nice introduction to electromagnetic interaction is first up. We read: "Many of the ideas that are important in quantum electrodynamics will show up in this example--Emission of a Photon by an atomic system in transition from one state to another." (see page 293). Another useful section elaborates upon the question: "What experiments will give information about the interactions of Photons with Hadrons."The fifteen pages which follow will provide you with much useful insight.(6) Weak Interactions, next: beta decay, weak currents, neutrino masses, a brief review of chirality versus helicity, all serve to round out a fascinating tour.(7) Earlier in the text we were introduced to gauge invariance. Chapter twelve will elaborate on that theme. I like the fact that..."...the proof of equation #12.27 is straightforward, if tedious. We shall show it for the electric field, and leave it as an exercise for the reader to prove it for the magnetic field." (page 393; a typo mars Equation #12.37, page 395--the " i " should multiply both of the factors, px and Et ).(8) Electroweak theory of Standard Model. Here, an instance where the authors state "...the subject is complex, for details we refer the reader to texts and reviews..." So, this chapter--thirteen--is merely qualitative.(9) Strong Interactions, next elaborated upon. We were introduced to the topic earlier in the book, we get it again.A spiral approach. Let us review a few problems from this chapter:" Do conservation laws permit terms in the pion-nucleon interaction that are quadratic in the pion wave function ? "" What are the spins and parities of the four lowest energy states of glueballs ? " " Show that the Coulomb potential solves Poisson's Equation,""What is the range of the one-gluon exchange force ? "Thus, there is a wide range of problems offered for student involvement.(10) Part five, a concentration on Models: Quark Models (nicely done), Liquid Drop and Fermi Gas Models, Shell Model and the Collective Model. Each of these Models is approached from a largely qualitative angle. The final twenty-five page chapter is an elementary elaboration of Astrophysics Applications. Problems at the end of this chapter are quite elementary.(11) There you have a summary of the book's contents. And, also, a reason (I believe) for the disparity among the reviews for the text. Too much to grab hold of at one sitting ! The book, as do a few others of this ilk, attempts to cover far too many topics. It is at once advanced and elementary. Some of the problems for students are rather advanced and, some of the problems are very elementary. The qualitative discussions, throughout, are well done. You get an uneven mix of the qualitative and the quantitative. The references and bibliography span the gamut: research papers, advanced texts, and elementary expositions. Happily, there is something for everybody.Unhappily, there is too much for any one student ! However, this is an interesting book to dip into !Thus, I can recommend same if only for collateral study.

This is a strange book in many ways, and has gotten steadily stranger since its first edition many years ago. It was originally intended for a course for undergraduate physics majors, and the first edition, in the 1970s, was indeed at that level. The present edition is all over the place as regards level. I would hesitate to use it as a text, since it is really more like an encyclopedia. Being printed on slick paper, the paperback edition is amazingly massive, you almost strain yourself picking it up. In terms of content, a good deal of the presentation is clear and to the point, but the book very frequently veers off into nearly incomprehensible, long and sort of anal-retentive derivations of "toy-model" results no one would have much if any interest in, an example being section 12.3.The great strength of the book is that it IS an encyclopedia. While giving a final exam over a long 3-hour interval, I thought of a large number of topics of contemporary interest in particle (and nuclear) physics, and used the index to turn to the book's coverage of the topic. In each case the coverage was up-to-date, informed, level-headed and clear. So I think the book makes a great reference, but I have serious reservations about its suitability as a textbook. On the other hand, I can't think of another book at this level which would make a better text... so there you are.

Plenty of content, but considering the price of the text it would pain me not to mention the sloppiness in execution. Steps in derivations are missed, in such a way that only leads to wasted time I understand that in some cases space can be saved by omitting elementary steps, but there's no excuse for doing so on tougher point. The writing style lacks, uneconomical and not especially clear. In fact the prose content does little to develop physical concepts in the readers mind, instead serving merely as a convenient boundary between derivations. If you wish to obtain an interesting perspective on subatomic physics, while developing a deep understanding of the topic, look elsewhere.

I just got my hands on the first edition of this book, came to Amazon to see if anything newer was available and got disappointed in the low rating of the book. My only goal in writing this brief review is to say that there are people out there who just like myself might like this book. The book nicely blends particle and nuclear physics stressing phenomena rather than pure mathematics. Just as the editorial review states, the book gives many examples of "back of the envelope" calculations again stressing the idea and simplifying the details. The bibliography is truly impressive. The footnotes on every page contain references to the original papers and/or reviews where the idea being discussed was either presented for the first time or where one can find a rather clear exposition of it. As for the reason for such a book I think it would be nice to meet all the players of the subatomic world before "skipping straight to QFT" as another reviewer put it.So why do I give this book only 4 stars? The main reason is that I have only seen the first edition and feel it would be misleading to rate the third edition so highly.

I saw this book referenced in a Harvard Business Review blog post and it was regarded as one of the "standards" by which other work is measured. So, I checked out the author and other references. All of the references treated this work the same- as the "standard".I am not disappointed. The text has many real-world (understandable) examples and information with explanations that are well thought out and presented. If you're tired of business books that are an academic's view of the real world, you will find this book refreshing. It is real-world, easily read, explains a lot and is worth every penny. If you manage or work in a dysfunction team or group, or just want to understand them, this is your book. If the "written by a Harvard Professor" label worries you into thinking that this book is just an academic exercise, don't let it. This book is readable and contains a lot of good information and examples.

Hackman could have made each point faster and much more concise. Something that should take only a few paragraphs to explain seemed to take the author many pages and often the additional content became a distraction. Often I would have to read the material more than once to determine value add vs. non-value add content.

Informative text with a perspective on the nexus between leadership theory and team leadership.

Leading teams is the best book on the topic of teams that I've read so far. It's very well structured, well researched, well written and full of useful information that can be used in real life to improve teams. The book consists of three parts of which part II is the main content of the book. Part I is called "challenge" and starts with an comparison of two different airline companies who have different strategies of improving service quality. One using self-directed team and one using more strict processes and procedures. It explains the advantages and disadvantages of the team approach and puts the challenge to how we can create an environment in which a productive team can work. Hackman then proposes five enabling conditions for getting team to work:1. A real team2. Compelling direction3. Enabling structure4. Supportive context5. Expert coachingEach of these are clarified in the five main chapters.A real team is defined at having four features: a team task, clear boundaries, defined authority and some stability in members. Each of these is clarified and backed up with very interesting research data.A compelling direction, a clear goal needs to be set for the team. This energizes the team. The chapter on compelling team has some very interesting material on fixing the process or fixing the goal.Enabling structure builds also on earlier work done by Richard Hackman and talks about structuring the team and structuring the task that the team needs to do. When both of these are structured then they will enable the team and create a possibility of a really well working, highly productive team.In supportive context, the rest of the organizational context is discussed. This includes the rewarding system (something I didn't always agreed with the author, though he makes very valid points!), the learning system and the technical supporting system. In the last of the five points, he more or less focuses on the team leader role. The team leaders role as a coach of the team. He earlier states that the team leader role is certainly overrated, though it still is important. He describes how a team leader can coach the team.Part III is the closing part of the book. It summarizes some of the earlier conclusions. It consists of one chapter that makes recommendations for moving forward with team in the organization. Then the last chapter the author the author discusses common obstacles and speculates about the future of teams.Overall, the book was an excellent read. Funny at times, well structured and excellent references. Of all the team-related books, this one stands out. One of the reasons for standing out is that its more based on research than about speculation (like many team books). A must read when you are working in or with teams.

I bought this book as a textbook for a course on leading teams and read it cover to cover. The Hackman model is a nice model and eye opener for anyone who has never given deep thought on team effectiveness and the border context teams are in. However more sophisticated readers may find it to be lacking in several aspects and should invest their time on other teamThe Hackman model appears to before concerned with setting the stage for teams to perform well instead of directly helping teams to improve. Therefore this model doesn't say much about conflict management, managing diversity and authority, and a bunch of other important stuff to keep the team running. It's also lacking as a guidance for leaders to improve their performance as Hackman has a tendency to say "this is very hard to balance" without giving ideas on how to balance the issue, and leaving the readers much in the dark after reading the book (thoug I admit it's too much to ask for, this is a team book and not a leadership book after all). For more sophisticated readers and who has previous exposure to team theories, I would recommend Roger Schwarz's The Skilled Facilitator. It gives a good summary in first 2 chapters and quickly moves on to more hands on and actionable recommendations. For those with no previous experience in this field before, Hackman model is a classic model and it might be worth a read. Just don't stop here as this book will not answer all your questions.

All good.

It is used as a text book for a class I am taking but have found it to be very helpful.

Love the depth of knowledge presented with an understandable approach given on team dynamics. I think that all managers and team members should read this book.
