I like a picture book with lots of details to talk about on each page, to promote vocabulary. Loved to read "The Good Morning Book" and "The Good Night Book" by Eloise Wilkins to my children when they were 12 - 24 months old. This is a great gift for our friends' new baby, who has a mom from Chicago and a dad from Tokyo. She will be learning to speak both English and Japanese, and will sometimes live in Japan and sometimes in America or London. Lots to look at and talk about in either language --- furniture, school, holidays, food --- but it's not a vocabulary book, it has a story. It's written in English, but you could look at the pictures and talk about the things in Tokyo in Japanese after you've read the English sentences on the page. Exactly what I was looking for!!

My son will visit Japan for the first time next month, and I was looking for a way to teach him simple concepts that would help him organize his ideas and expectations about Japan. This book accomplishes a surprising amount in very few pages and words. While I appreciate the way the book directly addresses holidays and traditions, it's the subtle things that helped me to talk about cultural differences with my son. For example, the book mentions that the little girl will start second grade, and shows a picture of two second grade girls walking home from school alone. I pointed out to him that in Japan, the streets are safer, and children generally go places independently from a very young age. This both scared and excited him, and I promised that he could roam independently only when and as he felt comfortable. It's often the little things that we want and need to discuss with kids. This book has plenty of them.

I purchased this book my daughter who was 6 years old at the time. She is half Japanese and we were going to visit her grandparents in the summer. I wanted to prep her for this trip to Japan and we read lots of books about Japan and Japanese culture. This was a very easy book and had lots of good information. I must say some of the pictures (drawings) were of very old Japanese life style and most of the people in Japan (unless you go to country side) don't live like that or don't have houses like that, but that's OK. This is just a learning tool. My daughter learned quite a bit and she taught herself some Kanji (Chinese character) from this book.

Bought it as a gift for some friends and they absolutely loved it. Its detailed and very thought provoking for children, as well as interesting for adults. A great way to travel to Tokyo from the comfort of your sofa.

This is a great book with which to introduce a child to Japan, things Japanese, and the Japanese language. The age range for enjoyment and enrichment is probably ages four through ten, which is unusual. This book will be read many times over, the art work is lovely, and it is an incredible buy.

Fun book for parents looking to teach kids about Japan. Cute characters and illustrations and very informative! My daughter never gets tired of it.

Muly son goes on snout Tokyo and this book is perfect for educating him about it. Thanks!

Good book for anyone!

I LOVE this book. I wish it was available before my my children's father died. If I had the chance to purchase this when we first realized how serious their dad's illness was, it would have better prepared my kids for what to expect when he died. There is no way to completely prepare for the death of a parent but this book helps tremendously. The author provides useful insight and breaks down the steps and emotions of grief. Hearing what other kids/teens have gone through helped my kids feel normal. Seeing others come through this awful experience gives hope. There are phases of grief and it is so different for kids. They lose a caretaker, teacher, advocate, someone to hug them, play with them and listen to them. It's so much harder for kids. This is a great book! I wish it would have come out sooner. I recommend it for families with an ill parent so it can help prepare the kids too. It's easy to read so isn't overwhelming.

PARENTAL DEATH: The Ultimate Teen Guide by Michelle ShreevePart of the series, IT HAPPENED TO ME, PARENTAL DEATH is designed for teens digging for answers and coping mechanisms following the tragic loss of a parent. It is written with sensitivity and knowledge and will prove helpful to any teen in this unfortunate circumstance. It has been compiled through twenty-four years of research, including Shreeve’s experience coping with her own mother’s death. It contains advice, research, and lessons learned the hard way, plus research and suggestions from experts, as well as insights from parentless teens that Shreeve has mentored. Special boxes highlight singular facts along with an extensive list of the latest reading lists, web sites, and other recommendations. Chapters include: The First Year, Cause of Death, Daughters, Sons, The New Family Dynamic, Second Parents, Stepparents, Transitioning through High School, and Forging Ahead. A must read packed realistic with important, realistic information. PARENTAL DEATH is highly recommended both for teens and surrounding caring adults hoping to help.Gloria Lintermans, Author, THE HEALING POWER OF GRIEF and THE SECRETS TO STEPFAMILY SUCCESS

What a wonderful book. Wish it was available when I was a child/teen since I lost my father at age nine. Still, after reading it now, it helped bring to light some of my issues making me feel better about things. I recommend this book to any child, teen or adult who has lost a parent when they were young. Full of very useful information, facts, websites, and resources. The use of real testimonies and famous people can help everyone relate. I further, recommend parents, get and use this book to help with communication and exploring the resources listed for the sake of their child/children who have lost a parent. In this day and age, it is more acceptable to reach out and seek help when someone is struggling. There should be no excuse not to and this wonderful book can definitely help anyone get started.

I am honored to be able to know the author Michelle. When I heard she was writing a book about something so close and personal to her, I was amazed. I got to read the book (and got it signed). I was in tears and just amazed Every chapter and page was something that honestly not only helps those who have lost a loved one, but those who KNOW someone who lost a loved one. It gives you hope and reassurance that you can make it through. I am blessed to not have had to lose anyone close to me. My brother in law lost his mom, and he read the book and for a gym, muscle man, he broke. It opens your eyes to the world around and the struggles that you do not think of daily. I am able to be able to support those now because I have a better insight on how I can be better to those.Michelle, thank you for sharing your memories and struggles and your experience on who you have become .I used to read "Chicken Soup for the Teenage Soul" and thought that was the bible for my youth... now this book is the bible to my adulthood. I go to certain pages to be able to really help, even though I haven't lost anyone. Just opening my eyes and heart more.

Michelle Shreve's excellent book should be on every home's bookshelf as well as every school library. It is a compassionate guide not only for teens who have lost a parent but for anyone who has had to console a child who has had such a loss...be you a friend, teacher, or merely an acquaintance.Although the author speaks from personal expereience, It is expansive, addressing many possible situations and, so thoroughly researched with many additonal resources offered.I highly recommend it.

Parental Death by Michelle Shreeve is truly a wonderful resource! As a therapist/school counselor for over 25 years I have shared it with numerous families in need since it came out. It is a must have for anyone who works with kids or who knows someone who has lost a parent or is on the verge of losing one. Losing a parent for a child/teenager is one of the hardest tragedies to work through and this book makes navigating that journey much more manageable. Shreeve candidly shares her own experiences when she lost her mom along with countless kids sharing their thoughts on the subject as well. This book is real! It will allow a grieving child to work their emotions and process the impact of losing a parent. Beyond this, the additional resources such as websites and support groups throughout the book allow for further after care once the book is read. Parental Death is a powerful voice to support kids when they have lost a parent and becomes the avenue with which they can pick up the pieces and move forward with life.
