This is by Mikuli, Chopin's close student. As pianists we should look at Mikuli editions because Mikuli captures the performance practice of Chopin's time. You certainly can disagree with Mikuli, but it can't hurt to look. This Schirmer edition is outstanding. The print is excellent, the layout is large and well spaced. Easy to read. It's big, 296 pages. The binding is tight; tricky to keep open. It's a really nice volume. Very happy to have it.

Unlike other collections of the mazurkas, this collection includes all of the known pieces that Chopin wrote in this genre as well as his wonderful polonaises. The technical difficulties range from modest to demanding and most pianists should find pieces that suit their level of expertise, except for pianists in the early to mid-intermediate levels. The Schirmer printings are clear and easy to read and the bindings hold up to constant use, but it takes a while to get the books folded enough to stay open while playing. (Not really surprising as they are fairly thick books. Not really an issue for me.)

I always love these Shirmer's editions. Clearly written and just the right size. Sometimes the pages wear so the binding isn't the best. Still, for the price it's great.

Arrived on time and as expected. This is an excellent edition with clear, easy to read print. It takes a bit if effort at first to get it to lie flat, no I just put a heavy book on the open music over night a few times and that took care of it.

My best edition of his mazurkas.

Nice economical way to supplement your Chopin collection. Also consider Schirmer's Nocturnes,Waltzes,Preludes.Binding is durable, but the book is thick enough where it is often difficult to keep book open. I'm a personal fan of sprial bound.

Title says it all: It would be nice to know exactly how this edition differs from Chopins intentions. Chopin's handwriting may be difficult to interpret but then that could have been stated. I lack explanations: How was the original handwriting, was there any room for doubt and why did Mikuli believe that his composing skills superseded those of Chopin? And if Mikuli was such an excellent composer why don't we know of anything he made?

First let me say, the recipes are very simple. Probably some or many of them you already have in your repertoire - say, slow roasted tomatoes? hummus? Some are perhaps too simple - avocados with lime and salt? Granted, she states for that - it's not really a recipe, "It's just a perfect thing in a very imperfect world" - I give you this example because what truly grabbed me in her book was her writing, and the way she introduces her simple but definitely tasty and well-balanced recipes. A cookbook that makes you smile all the way as you browse through it... is my kind of cookbook. And let me tell you, the Provencal-Style Spiced Nuts is perfect. I've made some versions before but hers hits the perfect balance of sweet and spice.

Love love love this book. Recipes are simple and easy yet appear super impressive. Great for entertaining or if you need inspiration for a few small snacks or sides. Photos are stunning. I love the colorful language the author uses and her storytelling, and best of all everything Iâ€™ve made so far from it is delicious!! Highly recommend. Also a great gift idea!!

Like the concept and some of the ideas (e.g. deconstructing a pizza) but at other times it seems that the author started with a beautiful photo and then worked back from that point, rather than starting with the ingredients or the meal idea. As a result there are lots of photos and ideas featuring figs, even though it's something that most people might realistically buy once in a blue moon.

Suzanne Lenzer has given us a tasty collection of small plates. More than that she has provided interesting stories to accompany the recipes. The pictures that accompany the recipes are stunning.

I was a battlefield tour guide in Europe for over three years. One of our most popular tours was the Ardennes Offensive aka "The Battle of the Bulge". Since we only had a day, we would drive up from Luxembourg City, paralleling the 3rd Army's relief route, and tour the Bastogne perimeter. If I had this book, I would've recommended this to my customers who wished to visit other sites of the battle. "A Tour of the Bulge Battlefield" is designed for the tourist who wishes to tour the battlefield(s) for himself/herself. Well researched and written, one could almost use this book as a secondary source in itself. The six chapters cover the entire battle, from the north around Stavelot, to the south in the Ettlebruch/Diekirch area. Each chapter is in itself an excellent capsulation of the battle and movements, both German and American. However, this is not a guidebook in the traditional sense, there is nothing about lodging, and very little regarding food, and other questions most tourists have. Also, what few maps there are inadequate, surprising considering this book is designed for auto-touring.If you get several maps, the excellent Michelin series comes to mind, plus a traditional guidebook, and some `net research regarding transport, renting a car in Belgium/Luxembourg/Germany, this book would make for an outstanding historical vacation.

If you are going to visit the Ardennes to see Battle of the Budge battlefields buy this book. Stories bring the locations alive. Easy to follow directions.

Using it right now! Great guide, though a few driving directions are confusing to follow. Some of the referenced sites have gone unfound (not sure if due to poor directions or removed by locals, etc.). The history and associated personal anecdotes are great. Highly recommend this guide.

Good guide to the region. Maps are always so difficult to find for these small villages. In my reading, it helps to see the regions being discussed in order to appreciate the written word. Purchased this as an advance review of my upcoming trip to Belgium and Luxembourg.

Excellent and a must if you want to do a tour on your own. A lot of information and simple to follow. It is not just a map telling you where to go but it is full of detail information so you spend time trying to visualize what these soldiers where faced with.

Chronology of the battle and troop movement helped me to understand where our troops were in the field as events occurred. Now I begin the real battle THE Ardennes:BATTLE OF THE BULGE BY HUGH COLE

Need a map of the battlefield in order to follow the described actions. Can't follow with a Kindle those in the book. Images are too small.

This is an excellent book. When I ordered it I didn't realize that it came from the UK so it took nearly three weeks to arrive. I has already provided me with much desired information.

We've had other Lonely Planet phrasebooks and they were OK so I blindly ordered this one. Big mistake. The pronunciation guide is apparently for a minor dialect and will grossly mislead you in a harmful way. If you're familiar with Spanish, it's pretty easy to read a lot of Portuguese after becoming familiar with the differences, but the pronunciation is dramatically different for a couple of spellings, and this guide fails miserably in the pronunciation area. It probably has useful phrases but I couldn't get by the seriously bad pronunciation.A few pronunciation differences require serious attention so that you can understand even simple phrases. A good example is the letter "r", which is pronounced like the English letter "h" in the initial position or in a double r. For example "rua" (street), is pronounced as "hua", 'rio" as "hio", "correio" (post office) as "coheio", etc. The pronunciation guide at the front not only doesn't mention this, but gives the wrong pronunciation (sorry, "rr" is not a "rolled" r as in Spanish).The pronunciation guide at the front of the book is just totally useless regarding the "r". The dictionary at the back must be written by someone else because appears to correctly show when the "r" is pronounced like "h". Similarly, the actual phrase transcriptions appear correct with respect to the "r". Well, there are some issues with syllable final "r"s, but ...Just one blatant error? No such luck.Another area of pronunciation surprise concerns "de", "di" ,"te", and "ti". Neither the (misleading) pronunciation guide at the beginning, nor the dictionary, nor the phrase transcriptions handle these correctly. In most contexts "de" and "di" are pronounced like "ji". For example, dia (day) is pronounced "jeea". Similarly "ti" and "te" are the unvoiced versions. For example, "tia" (aunt) is pronounced "cheea". These sounds are very frequent and it takes a surprisingly long time to get to hear these sounds as being spelled with "d" or "t". The phrasebook is a total pronunciation failure here.There's no need to trust me on this -- five sources verify this: (1) an Oxford Portuguese dictionary, (2) a Collins Portuguese dictionary, (3) the Living Language Portuguese Complete CD series (excellent by the way), (4) Wikipedia on Portuguese pronunciation, and (5) learning Portuguese from my long-ago Brazilian girlfriend who refused to speak English (which was good for my Portuguese). You can check all except the last.

We recently used this book on a week+ long vacation to Brazil. The book is great because it has many useful phrases, words and numbers that come in very handy in making transactions and traveling around in Brazil. The size is small enough to fit in your pants pocket or in a ladies purse or daypack, so you can carry it with you most of the time. If you have difficulty communicating, you can always point to the phrase or word(s) and when the other person sees it, they should understand.

Excellent little Quechua (Cuzco variety) written by an outstanding scholar, SerafÃn Coronel-Molina. This should be a quick reference not only for travelers, but any fieldworker going to the Southern Peruvian Andes should have this little book at hand. Highly recommended for its clarity, engaging prose, and very clear layout. If you are studying Quechua, this is what you'll keep in your pocket!

This book came in handy when I quickly realized that the 10 phrases of Portuguese I'd learned before leaving the US would last me about 10 minutes in Rio. It's hard to write out proper Portuguese pronunciation instructions, but this book seemed to get me close enough to where I could be understood.

I purchased this for my fiancÃ© before he went to Brazil for work. He said that so far, he has been able to use the basic words that the needs in order to ask for certain things. It has worked great so far!

I bought this on a whim when I needed a travel adaptor plug for a trip to Rio. It turned to be very helpful and fun to use. Its organized in practical sections depending on your situation (basic conversation, in a restaurant, sightseeing, at the airport, business, etc.). It also has a short English-Portuguese dictionary with some commonly used words. This a great little guide.

You can't learn Portuguese from this book since pronunciation is critical and not easy to guess from the book. However you can show the phrase from the book if in need so you will feel better having it with you, especially because it is small and light

Very handy in conjunction with lessons from a native speaker. 10/10, would buy again.

So many old time recipes. I am especially looking forward to the BBQ recipes. Many Southern Comfort recipes! Looking sooo good!

I thought this was a stand alone book, or the first in a series, but I feel like there was another book I should have read before this one. Itâ€™s hard to review it based on this, I just feel confused after reading it.

i didnt realize this book was short! i hate short books. they are waste of my time and energy. the plot sucked. i cant believe that v.c. andrews wrote this! :( i will not be ordering another too soon.

Not one of the best of the V.C. Andrews collection. It is a series of small books with different female characters. Still I at least finished it and will try the next in series.

V.C Andrews is a great writer. This is a great short quick read. Cant wait to read the other books in the series.

Thus I could enjoy the descriptions of combat and grueling training, but you don't have to have a martial arts background or be a fan necessarily to appreciate them. Yes, the story revolves around his fights, but it's his struggles and how it affects him that matter and anybody can relate to that. Also, if you have young kids, you will doubly appreciate this for a peek into how their world might be when they are young adults. I love this book. It's dark and moody, and human. The near future world is believable and recognizable, but also surprising. I got sucked into the life of Miro and walked alongside him wanting to know, at every step, what was going to happen next.If you like Mixed Martial Arts, you'll love this book. And if you don't know anything about the sport, you will also love this book, because this story is so much more than just the passion of this orphan kid who is trying to find himself.

Iâ€™m not a huge fan of fiction set in the future, but this book grabbed my attention and didnâ€™t let go. I gained an affection and an empathy for Miro, the protaganist, and his rag-tag team of MMA fighters. The authorâ€™s experience in future-focused technology shines through â€” itâ€™s fascinating how weâ€™ll navigate the city streets in our futures. But what really sets this novel apart from typical science fiction is the sensitivity with which the author writes about relationships. The reader will truly care about these characters, and the plot never lets up. An excellent read!

I found "The Liberator" by Alex Kershaw to be a unique and excellent vehicle to learn about World War II. Kershaw follows one soldier, Felix Sparks from landing on Sicily, fighting through Sicily, then up the 'boot' of Italy, another landing in southern France, north through eastern France, crossing the Rhine River into Germany, fighting through Germany to Bavaria, and, most significantly, liberating the Dachau Concentration Camp. The most amazing fact to me is that Felix Sparks actually survived this ordeal. His unit took some of the worst casualties of any American army unit in the European Theater.The book details the horrors infantry troops endured in Europe and the amazing courage it took just to pick up the weapon each day and continue the fight. PTSD (post traumatic stress disease , known by various other terms (shell shock, etc.) in those days), took a tremendous tole. Despite it all, Sparks continued to show leadership and good judgment. He first landed in Sicily as a Lieutenant and company commander. At the end, he was a Lt. Colonel and Battalion commander. His men loved and trusted him and he returned the feelings. The section of the book dealing with the liberation of Dachau was particularly riveting and wrenching.I recommend this book.

The US Army traditionally has been an organization that celebrates elites: Rangers, Special Forces, Delta Force, and Airborne Infantry. But, in the end, it is the straight leg, uncelebrated infantry units who do the heavy lifting of battle. The 45th Infantry Division was one of those organizations in WWII. In over 500 days of combat it suffered unimaginable casualties, fighting its way across Sicily, up the leg of Italy, into France and Germany. It went across the beach in four D-Days, but received little credit or praise. Col. Felix Sparks demonstrated unparalleled courage and leadership in guiding and encouraging his men through the terrors of mine fields, artillery barrages, machine gun fire, and extreme weather conditions of heat, cold and rain. This book is very well written, but equally hard to read because of the description of terror and carnage inflected on these young Americans by a determined, fanatical enemy. Mr. Kershaw has done another tremendous job in writing this book. I recommend it to all.

If you have only one book to read about the soldiers in WWII, this is it. I have read many books about the Second World War, but this one captures the essence, the sacrifice, the heroism, the pain and,yes, the horror of war better than most. What sets this book apart is following the life of a true hero, Felix Sparks, from second lieutenant to brigadier general, through innumerable battles, wins and losses and gives a â€œyou are thereâ€ quality of life during war. Written with care and thoughtfulness, this book is not to be missed.

Felix Sparks another unsung hero from WW2. He helped with the invasion of Italy and fought all the way into Germany. Along the way he liberated the Dachau concentration Camp. Here some of his men slaughtered the brutal SS that they captured. The aftermath had a full investigation into the conduct of those killing the SS. It eventually was squashed by Patton himself.The writer pulls no punches. He lets the reader know when a General messed up and how it affected the outcome of the battle. Felix Sparks is a true American Hero. Once you start reading it will be hard to put the book down.

I enjoyed the book as it followed the route my uncle took while in WWII. His division was alongside the authorâ€™s. I purchased it for my Dad and he enjoyed it as much as I since it was his brother. He, in turn, purchased it for my unclesâ€™s son. Hearing how rough their lives were for several years was heartbreaking. It was awful for them to have to go through. It should make us appreciate our soldiers even more. They are true heroes.

This fast paced, well researched, and extremely well written WWII saga is of the extraordinary experience of Felix L. Sparks, who rose from no rank dog face to command a regiment in the 45th division, from bloody Anzio to the hell of Dachau. It's amazing that one man saw and endured as much as he did and survived. Sparks was a great man.

The 45th Infantry Division is hardly etched on the publicâ€™s consciousness, yet it should be. A National Guard division - America was woefully unprepared for another world war and thus had few regular divisions - the 45th has a WWII combat record that very few divisions can equal and none envy. Thrown repeatedly into the hottest part of battles, the 45th somehow avoided breaking even when entire companies and even a battalion were wiped out almost to a man, yet events conspired to keep their tales mostly from the front page.Colonel Sparks, the subject of this book, is perhaps the best example the author could have selected as a focus. He is both typical of the breed and exceptional within it, and having survived the war, could give additional information after it ended. Sparks is the best possible representative of the American soldier and the larger American war machine, both tough as nails and filled with humanity. His story is amazing.The authorâ€™s recreation of Sparksâ€™ part of war is both dryly factual and colorful. He aptly avoids war porn while also not whitewashing the horrors. Those of us blessed with never facing such duty cannot really understand it, but books like this can help us understand to the degree possible, and to deeply appreciate the ordinary men and women who do such extraordinary things in defense of freedom and liberty. Highly recommended. Instead of books about understanding Islam, American university students should all be reading this book, that we may understand ourselves as a nation and grasp both the value of liberty and its terrible price. Highly, highly recommended.
