Lovely book. I actually bought it for myself, I love to read about Jacqueline Kennedy. I have small children as well so this will be a good way to show them why I read so many books about Jacqueline.

Great images really cute book.. its a little wordy for a childs book though.

Wonderful and inspirational.

Absolutely LOVE this book! What a lovely tribute to Jackie Kennedy. I learned so much about her. My students loved the story as well as the beautiful illustrations.

I got this as a gift for my granddaughter. She loved it! The illustrations were so good, and the book was well written! A plus!

Love the illustrations. Nice biography for children.

I mean this doesn't touch on a lot but it's a solid intro to one of the most significant first ladies in US history. I thought I knew a lot about her but I learned some here too. Denos' artwork is gorgeous and lends itself well to a story about Jackie Kennedy. The backmatter includes a lot more information like a detailed timeline and bibliography. Everything a picture book biography should be.

An informative and absolute stunner of a picture book. The year is only half over but Just Being Jackie may be my very favorite picture book biography of 2018. Detailed, swoon worthy illustrations which include Jackie in her iconic clothing. There is a timeline and author/illustrator notes. All things necessary in the best non-fiction picture books. This one is a must have on every level.

If you've never purchased a Hanna Karlzon coloring book, check them out. She has awesome designs. Apparently, Johanna Basford likes her work because many of the pictures in this book resemble images in Ms Karlzon's books, in particular the scarabs. I own many of Johanna Basford's previous coloring books. This book occasionally gives you a touch of her other works. But, many of the pages have large blank spaces. I purchase Johanna Basford's books because she usually provides full pages of unique & whimsical images to color. This book does the opposite. You get a wreath w/ nothing else on the page or a page w/ just 4 flowers on it. Occasionally you get a page or 2 pages together w/ full images. Unfortunately, many of those images resemble my grandmother's wallpaper. I own about 40 coloring books. I have no problem spending upwards of $15 for a good book. I preordered this book expecting something similar to Ms. Basford's previous works. I was quite disappointed in this book. There is nothing new or exciting in this. I may be being harder on Ms. Basford based on her previous works. But, her previous works are the reason I preordered this book. Seriously, too much ugly wallpaper design & inspiriration from other artists. I already own the books by the other artists. I wanted a new Johanna Basford designed book. This isn't it.

This is a pretty awesome book. I like flowers but don’t love them. I love this book though. I’m not going to spend a lot of time typing. I’m just going to show you some more pictures. That’s the best way to decide if you want something. The covers of the book are beautifully designed as always and the paper is a nice heavy paper as usual. I love, love, love the picture with the flowers in the truck. I would say my least favorite pictures are the Beatles. Thankfully there aren’t many of those. What is your favorite. Update your review once you receive your book. Just curious what picture other people pick as their favorite. I’m going to color my favorite one right now. (Truck picture)

I have ALL of Johanna’s, Hanna Karlzon, Klara Markova, & Maria Trolle’s (plus other artists’) color books. While l’ve gotten spoiled & now prefer the hardbound books with the excellent grade of paper for coloring, I also love Johanna’s books previous to this one. Also as stated by others, when I opened the book the first time, the binding made a cracking sound & a few of the last pages fell completely out.The paper in this book is very coarse. When I layer the colors (Prismacolor Premier) it’s like they glob on top of each other without spreading and blending together. Just using a single color, I had to bear down to get it spread evenly so it turns out messier than I like. I took a picture of an area where I used a light hand & you can see the paper has a heavy tooth (more texture, better suited for charcoal & pastels). Then I layered white on top, with a heavier hand & the color underneath doesn’t blend, it stacks. I posted another picture from a Klara Markova book where l layered multiple colors & they blended so nicely because the paper is smoother. It’s really a bummer as I don’t enjoy coloring on this type of paper & most likely won’t color any further in this book.I would love a duplicate book with the quality heavy grade paper made for pencils!

This is strictly a review on binding. I hadn't even finished looking through the book when the last 1/3 of the pages dropped out of it. There was no fixing it. I had to disassemble it entirely. Fortunately the glue was so poorly done the pages came out just like the pages of the artist's editions of her previous books.I really miss the sewn bindings. My copies of SG and EF are still solidly bound. I've thumbed through them hundreds of times and not a single page lost.Johanna's skill and talent are NOT in question here. Even with shoddy binding problems I still love her works the best. All of the pictures in this book are beautiful and the paper quality is wonderful.I heard of the Ivy books falling apart and haven't purchased one because of that. Looks like there may be the same problems with this one too.Poor Johanna; I wish her publishers would use printers that are of the same caliber quality as her art.Keep doing what you do, Johanna. Cheers!

I have recently picked up adult coloring again after taking a break. This book’s timing could not have been more perfect! I have all of Johanna Basford’s previous books and I think this might be my favorite. Of course it includes many many flowers for coloring, but it also includes elements throughout that recall the charming sweetness found in “Secret Garden” and the magic in “Enchanted Forest.” The drawings are varied and include pages that should appeal to both the beginning colorist and the advanced. I haven’t found any pages with impossibly tiny details I personally find frustrating to color (think “Lost Ocean”-absolutely beautiful- but felt more like tedious work and less fun to color). The paper in “World of Flowers” feels smooth but with just enough tooth to handle several layers of color. I’ve experImented with Faber-Castell Polychromos, Prismacolor Premier, and Caran d’ache Luminance; all layer and blend beautifully in these drawings. The paper is heavy and feels the same, or similar, as the paper printed in “Magical Jungle” (U.S edition).Thank you, once again Johanna Basford, for creating this beautiful book and ensuring the many many hours of happy coloring in my future!

This is my favorite book out of all of them. If you love flowers and intricate details, you’ll love this book!

I know this author is my mom’s favourite so when happened upon it on Amazon, pre-ordering was def a must. What my mother is not a huge fan of is flowers so I was super surprised when my mother stated this was one of her favourite books in the author’s collection. In her words “I just love it”. Apparently, it is also larger than some other the author’s other releases and chock full of some pretty intricate stuff. It made a great “just because” gift :)

This book features some of Jessica's nastiest and most selfish behavior as she and her sorority pals gang up on overweight Robin, a girl who wants to join their clique. Elizabeth tries to help Robin, but her plan may backfire because it relies on help from notoriously self-absorbed Bruce Patman.Looking at Jessica's nastiness through 21st century eyes is illuminating -- when I read this book as a girl, bullying didn't have nearly the attention that it does today. As a result, the casual treatment of Jessica's cruelty is sometimes jarring. Despite the subject matter, this is still a fun and light read that doesn't go too deep. At the end of the day, even Robin doesn't seem too upset by what happened. Some of the reviews of the paperback version note changes to the text. As far as I can tell, the Kindle version duplicates what I read when I was young (that is, the Wakefield twins are described as size 6, not size 2). If you want to read the original, go with the Kindle version.

Like many 30 and 40 somethings, I discovered the Sweet Valley High universe as a young teen. As a 13 year old, I worshipped these books. 20 years later, I re-read them and was amazed at how hilariously awful they really were. But that was part of the fun, and it didn't diminish my pleasure in them - until I got around to re-reading this one.I was a fat 13 year old. As a result, I was often the subject of ridicule from the Mean Girl types in my class, much like poor Robin Wilson. However, unlike Robin, my extra pounds did not obliterate my brain cells and make me a mouth-breathing idiot. I was not dense enough that I would have thought the Queen Bee of the popular girls wanted me to be her best friend, rather than her slave. I was not completely devoid of pride to the extent that I would have humiliated myself to try to fit in with the cool crowd. Even though I was fat! Yes, Francine Pascal - fat does not equal dumb and unlikable. But the most important difference between Robin Wilson and me was that I never managed to go on a diet and lose a ton of weight to the point where I was unrecognizable, within the space of a few weeks. But because Robin DID drop roughly a hundred pounds (and simultaneously gain a hundred IQ points, because according to Francine, all thin people are smart and likeable) and lived happily ever after with the cool crowd at Sweet Valley High, my impressionable 13 year old self assumed that it was possible to do so. And I tried, and failed, because I didn't know how to eat and exercise in a healthy way. That made me think that I really was destined to be a fat loser for the rest of my life. That's a pretty harsh self-image for a 13 year old. I wonder how many other fat girls read this book and thought less of themselves because of it?With last year's "Sweet Valley Confidential" and this year's "The Sweet Life" hitting the bookstores and e-readers, I've found many fellow former SVH devotees who have also re-discovered the magical world of perfect size 6 figures and Pacific blue eyes. There are whole online communities devoted to snarky discussions of the wonderful awfulness. Taking the Sweet Valley books for what they are - poorly written fairy tales - I can still enjoy them, in a much different manner than when I was a teenager. And yet when it comes to this particular book, there's still a sore place in me that hasn't quite healed.

When I was younger I use to love this book series. I ordered it as a gift for my daughter. I wanted to try and get her into reading. She is a teenager and her main interest is her electronic gadgets. This series seem to have done the trick. She enjoyed the book. And keeps bothering me to buy her the rest. The book came quickly and in excellent condition. I am purchasing the rest of the series.

I think this is a great book!It was very cute and I rate it 5 stars! I am in love with these book and I just want to read them all!I am going on to book 5 and I am so excited to read it!

I LIKED THIS BOOK VERY MUCH!

Best series ever

Brought back so many great memories!I chose the five star rating because it is easy reading and I could relate to the story back then and all these years later I can still relate to how the author conveyed the trials and tribulations of the twins!I would definitely recommend this this story as well as the series to anyone.Way to go Amazon!!

After reading some of the pages in the preview, I realized it's not the original version, but a modernized version of it. I really wanted the original.

Let me make it clear that I am neither a Hindu nor a Muslim, so am surprised when people call Varshney's research biased against Muslims, I am not sure how anyone could get that out of this book...if anyone for the sake of argument wanted to make a case for this book being biased there would be one for it being biased against Hindus!( which it is not either to be fair). But I guess if you are looking for Islamophobia you find it anywhere just as people promoting Islamophobia find reasons to be Islamophobic.. sad but true. Also this book is clearly in the genre of an optimistic search for ethnic peace..which makes it a tad bit 'innocent' but honestly that is the only reason I would read a book about ethnic conflict.

I've worked and taught in the field of peacebuilding for 25 years and consider this book the single most important research that has been done in the field. Varshney breaks new ground in conducting indepth research into why some cities in India into fell into violence and some did not during times of high national tension. He presents clear and extremely useful findings about what is useful and what is not useful in resisting violence. Specifically, his research shows that creating structures that bring people together to work for a common cause or benefit(such as Hindu-Muslim traders cooperatives, joint community development committees, peace committees, etc.) has a marked effect in reducing violence.I present Varshney's findings in a variety of settings worldwide and find audiences always highly responsive. My students love the book and find Varshney's ideas so clear and insightful that the often refer back to him later. This book in my view is an example of scholarship at its best: well-designed, provocative, clear in its conclusions. On top of that is it unusually lucid in writing style. I consider it a "classic" - a book that will endure for many years and that deserves to be on the shelf of any serious student of ethnic or religious violence. You can read the first and last few chapters and get the real benefits of the book.Ron KraybillProfessor of Conflict TransformationEastern Mennonite University

This very compelling book tells the story of Hindu-Muslim violence in India not by relying on a hunch, or ideological predisposition, but by drawing on hard data. Tightly written, the book will make you think about ethnic violence in a systematic and intelligent manner. The author's significant argument that civil society is implicated in preventing riots in certain Indian cities has important implications both at the personal as well as the political level. For it makes us ask ourselves, as citizens how does our participation or non participation in civic life impact Hindu-Muslim relations in our cities? Furthermore, how can the state and international agencies encourage and entrench the kind of civic behavior that diminishes the prospect of conflict turning into riots? Should be read by all concerned citizens.

Mr. Ashutosh has taken a very controversial subject but the high ground he had to take with integrity in dealing with such a sensitive subject is missing. He is blaming Muslims for the riots. Nothing can be further than the truth. Muslims are not in power hence can do nothing with no administration and police support. They don't make policies nor laws and have practically no say in any thing. One wonders how one can orchestrate riots that Mr. AShutosh is accusing the Muslims of. Defies logic. The problem is they have been sidelined from all departments of Indian and State Governments as a matter of State Policies. They have been singled out for discrimination in all walks of life. Without State Policy helping them to be driven out of the mainstream this could not happen.Muslims are also Indians and must not be discriminated at any cost. Their presence must be made to be felt in all Government and Private services, only then can we say that we are a great secular democracy. They are a sizable chunk of the Indian population. Rajiv Gandhi at least had realised the need to uplift Muslims and was thinking in the right direction until Narasimha Rao took over and derailed the process yet again. The problem is Muslims do not read the constitution and take people like Narasimha Rao and Narender Modi to courts.I plead with Mr. Ashutosh to be more sympathetic to their co-citizens and understand their needs and plight. It hardly matters what religion one propheses in a secular India. Or does it?

Varshneys research is particulary impressive because of the concise research method that he upholds. I am pleased that he has studied both peaceful and violent cities--giving his research model a basis for comparison. I have purchased 20 copies of Ethnic Conflict and Civic life and have circulated the work among my friends. Varshney's work gives us hope for world peace. this is the work of utter genius. very impressive research. particulary interesting was his intricate methodology of janwars in conflict. I highly recomment this book.a beintot, julliette

Mr. Varshney seems to have some agenda with this book. This book with it emphasis tries to blame muslims for the instigators of all riots . May I suggest another book called "The production of Hindu muslim violence "by Paul Brass . This book is more balanced and deals very well the real issues of riots . Infact Mr. Varshney was so critical of this book that he misquotes the authors intention and harshly critisizes his schlorly work in his review with the Times of India. In reply, Mr. Brass posts his objections and analysis about criticism from Mr. Varshney in a poignant and subtle manner.

While the information of the first several chapters was good concerning selling art to interior designers, I feel the book "How to Sell Art to Interior Designers" doesn’t go far enough. The book gets off to a great start about locating, contacting and presenting art to interior designers, but falls well short introducing business topics that pertain to after the sale, such as contracts, business policies, fulfillment and such, and had very limited discussion of pricing. I feel that this leaves the reader short on better understanding the whole picture. I also didn’t appreciate the compilation of text from another book from the author that focuses on the principles of selling, a topic that is well handled by scores of books. It was hard to tell if this book was about selling art to interior designers, or the art of selling. In addition, this additional text, about half of the book content, was not well integrated as evidenced by that text repeatedly making reference to selling art to individuals for their own use as opposed to professionals (interior designers) who buy art for their projects – an entirely different market. I also feel that the book is out-of-date in that it only once referenced social media, and paid virtually no attention to the variety of online tools available to conduct business in terms of art. I would have preferred broader subject coverage. I came very close to not making the book purchase at all because of the classic long-winded marketing of the book on the author’s website. And this may be Amazon’s doing, with a very sparse “Look Inside” that OMITS the table of contents! I elected to purchase a $10 Kindle version of the book to reduce my purchase risk. As it turns out the book did not entirely deliver on the promise of its promotion. If you need a primer on the principles of selling more than you need information about doing business with interior designers in terms of art for their projects, then this book will provide some value.

This book is very accessibly written and it presents a lot of considerations that only insiders who have worked in these markets for decades could know. For example they have a section on design centers - who shops there, how to find them, how to approach people a them. I like that this book presents the parameters of the interior design market very frankly, for example that the artist's art has to fit in with a whole look. There is a lot of information presented at a brisk pace, they just get right to the point which I really appreciate.

This was a fascinating book that took me from the mystery of not even knowing that one can sell to the interior design market, to how to do this. I found myself quite naturally applying the concepts in this book to further the career of a very talented artist that I'm helping to bring up to the next level. This book and its information were quite invaluable for me. I liked it so much, I'be been buying more books by both authors.

Book Review: How to Sell Art to Interior DesignersAuthors: Barney Davey and Dick HarrisonHave you ever read a “how to” book that started off all clear and helpful with steps A, B, C, –maybe D, and then skipped over the really deep and weedy parts of E F G H I J K L M N O P Q R S T U V W to magically arrive at X Y and Z?I have, and they leave me cold, and scratching my head.THIS IS NOT ONE OF THOSE BOOKS!!!How to Sell Art to Interior Designers combines authority on the subject with a friendly, humble tone and actually wades through the weeds with you!Barney Davey’s Décor Magazine marketing and social media savvy combined with Dick Harrison’s down to earth gumshoe experience provide rich material on such topics as making a portfolio, where to find interior designers, and how to talk once you arrive at your meeting.😉Here are 11 of the many things I learned:Build or purchase an inexpensive portfolio–not one of those heavy leather ones– that is easy to open and will not dog ear your paintings.Start researching in the most accessible places: look for prospects (design firms) in the yellow pages and color trends by googling Williams and Sonoma, Crate and Barrel, and Benjamin Moore, etc.’s“Don’t apologize for yourself.” This is a lesson I needed years ago before cold calling with my first print. My opening sales salvo to the frame shop owner: “You’re probably not interested in buying my new limited edition Morning Walk, but here it is.” My good friend who went along for moral support me gave a gentle talking to after we left the shop. You don’t need a fancy”spiel” to begin the convo with the busy professional interior designer–just some brief small talk about the weather and jump right into “What kind of project are you working on? What colors are you using? What sizes will work best?”Designers think differently about composition than I do as an artist. The designer looks for art that “reflects and enhances every other component of the overall design.” I am reminded that my art, as lovely and wonderful as it is, is going to be one detail in the overall design– as well as a smaller item in the budget. Of course I would love for the art to be a hefty item in the budget–who needs all those sofas and drapes and credenzas anyway?!To frame or not to frame—that is the question. “The reality is that taking that step (framing) often makes the sale more difficult.” I love this–I have spent so much $$ on framing and the truth is that “if the ID doesn’t like the mat or the frame” then I would lose the sale. Furthermore “ID’s are used to seeing art in the raw.” I don’t have to fancy it up like you might do for the retail customer.ID’s love multiples.–This one lights my fire because I just painted 100 6×6 paintings of florals, landscapes–all similar in feel but each different.:)Think in terms of creating different lines of my work.Do carry my fellow artists art with me in my portfolio when calling on ID’s. And have them do the same for me.Don’t try to sell snow scenes to Floridians! And one of my favorite subtitles “Stay Flexible, Calm and Diversify.”I highly recommend this charming book–How to Sell Art to Interior Designers.

Very good introduction to the venue. It does not cover everything ther is oit there but it definitely is a good starting point.

If you want a laugh, read the 1-star review and comments on it. The reviewer tried to trash Ms. Young's definitions of "wok hay" by (according to a commenter) quoting the Wikipedia article on the subject, which in turn (according to another commenter) was quoting . . . Grace Young!I measure the value of a cookbook by how much information (recipes, technique, and lore) I copy out of it into my personal cooking files. By that standard, this book is at the top of my list for all time. To top it off, the writing is often lyrical, always informative. My senses have had an awakening, and my kitchen life will never be the same.

My husband decided he wanted to try wok cooking so started with this book. Grace Young is AWESOME. If you're new to woks or just wanting to up your game, she's an essential read. Equally essential is the right wok. She recommends (and we bought) this one from Amazon: 14 Inch Carbon Steel Wok w/ Helper Handle (Flat Bottom), sold and shipped from The Wok Shop. BE SURE to buy directly from the Wok Shop, not just someone who resells from them, because they followed up with instructions on how to properly season it by email. WOW was that impressive--and essential given that this isn't non-stick otherwise. Gorgeous pictures and lots of info make this a must-read if you'd like to make wok cooking part of your life.

I have an entire bookcase full of cookbooks, and this is one of my very favorites. Most of my cookbooks just sit there, full of promise, but this book gets pulled out MUCH more often than most. It's beautifully done (the cover is stunning), the photography is first rate and tells a great story, but most importantly to me the writing is clear, descriptive and extremely practical. Although I've enjoyed Asian foods my whole life, I didn't grow up with it at home, and this book was a real eye-opener. I've learned more "new things" from this book than I have from ANY other cookbook (and I have 5 shelves full of cookbooks). The first 50 or so pages focus on the history of the wok, the different types of woks, etc. and it's all interesting reading; the book also provides very useful context for selecting/buying a wok. Grace Young offers many tips on how to cure/season a wok, how to maintain a wok, and how to bring a dead wok "back to life". The book then explains the principles of stir-frying, and there are a few really critical techniques that explained very clearly, e.g. hot wok/cold oil, "swirling-in" liquids, the importance of using ingredients that are dry, how much protein/veggies you can put into a wok, etc. - all these principles work together to provide that wonderful "sear" that comes from proper wok technique. Once you have these principles down, it's easy to experiment and make your own creations in the kitchen. The techniques make all the difference between wok dishes that are just "okay" and "wow!"While this book isn't chock-full of recipes, it has some real gems, such as Chicken with Sichuan Peppercorns and Uncle Lang's Pan-Fried Sea Bass (which I've made with Salmon as well as Halibut). I've served the Chicken with Sichuan Peppercorns to guests several times, and it consistently gets RAVE reviews. A few ingredients in the book can be hard to find, especially if you're not in an urban area, but most can be found in Asian markets. This is the first of Grace Young's cookbooks that I bought, and it's had a big impact on what goes on in my kitchen. Before I got this book, my wok was something I used a few times a year, now I find myself using the wok for things well beyond Asian cooking; a properly-seasoned wok makes for quick cooking and easy clean-up, it's a very handy tool once you know how it "works".If you're a newcomer to the sport of stir-frying, and you'd like to dive in and learn how to cook with a wok so that you get really tasty dishes, I highly recommend this book.

Just an outstanding book for anyone wanting to learn how to cook with a wok. Grace does a great job of demystifying Asian cooking. She also has a wonderful Facebook page called Wok Wednesday that is fun.

Being 1st generation Chinese American, I bought a wok in college and never seasoned it. It soon rusted and was thrown away. Ever since then, I have stayed away from using authentic woks (used non stick woks) but my mom kept on saying that I should try using a traditional wok.Long story short, I bought this book on a whim and WOW, what a book. It has instructions on how to purchase a wok, how to care for one, and numerous authentic Chinese recipes for cooking with one (and some even without). The book also has great pictures and details about the history of the wok and how it ties into Chinese culture. I have really enjoyed reading the book and cooking some of the recipes. If you are looking for an informative look into the history of the wok along with modern practical advice on how to cook with a wok (it even has pictures of condiments so you can find them at your local Asian grocery mart!!) - you cannot go wrong with this book. This will be one of the books I'll be using for the rest of my life.

Great job of explaining the history and care of a wok. Some good recipes inside this book. Will definitely purchase more books from this author. Very well written.

Wonderfully written recipes, recommendations on ingredient brands and equipment, easy to follow techniques, and lots of photos. My husband and I have learned a lot about wok cooking from Grace's books. IMO, the best thing is the flavors of these recipes. Better than any Chinese restaurant I've been to locally. This book has totally spoiled me from ever wanting to go out for Chinese again.

This cookbook could also be titled, "Everything you wanted to know about a wok, but were afraid to ask". With astounding accuracy, Chef Grace Young guides you into the world of the Wok, Wok Hey (The Breath Of A Wok), and all of it's nuances. Her recipes are exacting guides that leave nothing to chance. Recipes are detailed, so the dish comes out right the first time, if you follow her instructions. Includes excellent seasoning instructions and tips that turn the mysterious "Wok", into your culinary prized possession!

I never was able to turn out good wok dishes (forget those old hippy stir fries) until I got "Breath of a Wok. Now even my husband can prepare a decent stir fry. Easy to follow, this book takes the mystery out of wok cooking, has good interesting, healthy recipes, and is my constant on-the counter companion.

The Fire Wish (Jinni Wars), by Amber Lough

From School Library Journal

Gr 9 Up—In this fresh new twist in the fantasy genre, Lough places a decidedly human spin on the jinni (aka genie) myth, the diabolical creatures of Arabic lore. Zayele, a human princess from Baghdad, forces a wish upon Najwa, a jinni, and the consequences are dangerous and life-altering. The wish causes the teens to switch places and they must contend with the very different worlds to which they are transported. Both main characters are distinctly developed, and even when the switch occurs, they maintain their disparate identities. Lough's stylistic prose is simple and accessible; she employs many elements of imagery and figurative language in easy-to-understand ways that will appeal to younger teens and reluctant readers. A tense and mysterious mood pervades this book, but the pacing picks up too rapidly in the latter part of the novel. The world-building falters, and many teens will be discouraged and confused by the lack of development of background information and the novel's internal mythology. The use of occasional deus ex machina methods also disappoints. An uneven debut.—Amanda C. Buschmann, Atascocita Middle School, Humble, TX

Review

VOYA, June 2014 "In medieval times, during a war between the humans and jinni, sixteen-year-old Najwa lives below the world’s surface in the cavern of crystal, fire, and water, training to be a jinni who can spy on the humans living above them. But her first time above ground, she is enthralled by the beauty of the human world and intrigued by the human prince she sees in Baghdad’s palace. Meanwhile, sixteen-year-old Zayele is living outside of Baghdad in rural Zeb, where she chafes at the restrictions placed on her life, especially when she is unexpectedly selected by the caliph’s vizier to travel to Baghdad to wed the prince. When Najwa makes a forbidden trip to the surface of the world, she is seen and seized by Zayele, who wishes for them to trade places. As each is catapulted into a foreign world, events unfold showing each young woman’s strengths amid unexpected love and intrigue. Treachery by the vizier endangers both Najwa and Zayele, who learn they are connected not only by Zayele’s wish. Lough has created a lyrical story resounding with magic, love, and strife. Besides the lure of beautiful language and a compelling story, she also touches on themes of the desire to truly belong and the discovery of inner strength. This first book in a series will hook young adult readers who grew up on tales of Aladdin and the Arabian Nights and is sure to entice others looking for a tale of romance and adventure. This first-time author has created a winning entry in the world of young adult fantasy."Booklist Reviews, July 1 2014"In this Middle Eastern fantasy reinvention of The Prince and the Pauper (1881), a soon-to-be-princess swaps places with a jinn training to be a spy in the decades-long war between the jinni and the humans for survival and supremacy. Najwa, the jinn, is still learning the extent of her powers, training under the famous magus Faisal for the Eyes of Iblis corps. Zayele, a daring young girl set to wed the caliph’s son, wants nothing more than to stay with her family. The two girls should be enemies, but when they accidentally meet on the way to the caliph’s palace, Zayele makes a powerful wish that switches their lives and points of view, making each girl a linchpin for their respective sides of the ongoing battle. There’s a promise of romance, though it remains slight in this first installment in a planned series, and the focus remains mostly on the intriguing schemes the girls find themselves in. Debut author Lough’s lovely and lyrical writing fills this fascinating fantasy world with delightful, lush detail."Publishers Weekly, May 5 2014"Debut author Lough introduces two courageous, resilient heroines in this series opener, a historical fantasy set in Baghdad’s Golden Age. Humans and jinn once lived in peace, advancing scientific knowledge through cooperation, but are now at war. Zayele, a free-spirited 16-year-old from Zab, where the war began, dreads her upcoming marriage to the caliph’s son Kamal; she’ll have to leave behind her blind brother. Zayele makes a wish to trade places with the unwilling jinni Najwa. Reflecting the author’s background in military intelligence, Najwa, part of the prestigious Eyes of Iblis Corps, must investigate the game-changing weapon Kamal is developing. As both girls struggle to undo Zayele’s wish, they uncover their shared, hidden past and become targets of deadly intrigue. Though sometimes predictable, Lough’s novel distinguishes itself by its willingness to follow through on the consequences of its protagonists’ actions. “We know you didn’t mean to harm Najwa, but what is disturbing is that you so freely took from someone else,” the wise Faisal explains to Zayele before sending her to rescue Najwa and reverse her mistake."

#2,224,434 in Books (See Top 100 in Books)

I'm surprised I hadn't heard more about this book when it first released. I preorder in paperback because it was only $5 and really enjoyed the entire story. The first 50 pages were slow only because it took sometime to get used to all the names and who was who but after that the story quickly escalated and you're caught up in a world of jinni, prince & princess and wishes. I loved Najwa's story and her admiration of the prince from afar. I thought we got a true glimpse of Zayele on the beach with Atish, hopefully we get to see more of her true self in The Blind Wish. I love the magical world created and I'm looking forward to finding out more in book two. I'm hoping for more romance and the war to be settled.

On my quest for diversity in literature, I discovered a blog post about a white woman named Amber Lough who grew up in the Middle East and Japan, and then wrote a fantasy book about characters from that area, called The Fire Wish. Could a middle-aged white woman really do justice to a book about Arab teenagers in the desert? She seemed to have done her research, and I was willing to give it a shot. After all, who doesn’t like a book about genies? Djinn? Jinn? In this book: Jinn. Well, even if you aren’t a big fan of the topic, I strongly suggest you give this book a chance. The Plot: Zayele is a headstrong young teenager living in a small village three days’ travel away from Baghdad, in a time long before electronics. She is chosen, against her will, to be a prince’s bride in an act of good faith between the tribe and the palace. Zayele is desperate to get out of this arrangement, even considering running away with her blind younger brother, but eventually is forced to make the journey along with her older cousin Rahela, who is terrified of the jinn, having survived a jinn attack when Zayele was born.Najwa is a slightly timid teenaged jinni, just learning about her own abilities in her underground world. On one of her spy tests it turns out that she is the only jinni – anywhere – who can get past the human palace’s jinn wards and enter. She also discovers some very important information about a young girl who has been chosen to be the first bride of the younger prince (sound familiar?). Wanting to know more about this princess, Najwa breaks the rules and uses her invisibility spell to visit her. Then she gets caught. By the future princess.Zayele is delighted to have caught herself a real, live jinni, and demands a wish from her. Najwa is forced to grant Zayele’s wish to have Najwa take her place as the princess, but instead of returning home, Zayele finds herself taking Najwa’s place in the underground jinn caverns. Suddenly, neither girl is having nearly as much fun as she thought she would, and both must find a way to escape their situations without being caught. Najwa, with only the jinn-loathing Rahela as her ally, cannot wish herself out of her situation, and Zayele has quite a bit of difficulty pretending to be a jinni when she is not. With the impending royal marriage and both the jinn and humans on the verge of war, it is a race against time to set things right. The Verdict: Holy wow, I am a little embarrassed at how quickly I stalked Amber Lough’s twitter, tumblr, and personal website to find out when the next book comes out. The Fire Wish is told from alternating points of view, which made it a little difficult to follow at times, but even that could not slow down my voracious appetite to know what happened to these two girls. I wish (haha, get it?) I could say more about the plot of this book, but I’d be giving away some major spoilers, and this is one book I do NOT want to spoil for anyone.

I'm not a big fan of books written in the first person. And I'm especially not a big fan of two main characters who have the exact same personality being written in the first person. The beginning of this book had me completely confused. I wondered why they sometimes called her Najwa, and other times they called her Zayele, and why the writer kept switching back from her being trained as a Jinni and her being at home wondering why the Viziar has come calling. Until I got to the part where Zayele was shipped off to Baghdad, I did not even realize these were two different people. And what do you know, when the two meet on the barge to Baghdad, low and behold, they look exactly alike. So, I have to ding the book a couple of stars for not being clear, and for writing both characters in the first person in a way that just caused confusion.Otherwise, the storyline was okay, but I doubt I will read any following books in the series.

A fun take on well-known arabian folklore. I like it:}

Visually rich, lyrical in spots and filled with exciting, breath-holding moments. It's "The Prince and the Pauper" set in ancient Bagdad, but in this case the pauper is a Jinn. A wonderful read.

I really enjoyed the read. I had a hard time putting it down. I had never read anything about jinnis before and it was a breath of fresh air.

So so so so good! The audio book was great as well and I cannot wait to get my hands on the next one.

Predictable but interesting enough to keep you reading.

The Evolution of the Human Head

Review

Lieberman's integrated approach will make his book a forum for a way of thinking in human evolution that has not yet found its equal in print. (Christopher Dean, University College London)This is an outstanding book. Lieberman draws from a wide variety of disciplines, including bone biology, embryology, morphometrics, functional anatomy, and paleontology to forge a masterful synthesis of the evolution of the human head. It will be the definitive reference for decades. (John G. Fleagle, Department of Anatomical Sciences, Stony Brook University)Lieberman offers acute descriptions of anatomy, embryology, physiology, and hominid fossils, while providing an exciting way to observe the relationships among structures, functions, and evolutionary variance. (Scott Vieira Library Journal 2011-01-01)Lieberman dives deep into the cranium, showing just how much of what we consider to be human is connected to what happens above the neck. (Carolyn Y. Johnson Boston Globe 2011-01-30)Daniel Lieberman has written a wonderful and inspiring book about the human head's evolution...One stands in awe at the work that has gone into it...This encyclopedic book is transformative...The morphological details in Lieberman's book make it a direct descendant of Gray's Anatomy...If a single word describes this book, it is integrative. The author integrates material from anatomy, physiology, physics, biomechanics, molecular and developmental biology, but brings all under the umbrella of evolutionary theory. (Chris McManus Times Higher Education 2011-02-17)This [is an] impressive book...This hefty and well-written book offers a scholarly breadth and attention to detail that are certainly laudable. The book is quite unusual in that it includes a comprehensive review of the soft tissues associated with cranial features and discusses them within the context of evolutionary morphology and the fossil record of the human skull. I can think of no other volume that packages the anatomy of the human head in this fashion...Lieberman's big book definitely moves us ahead in effectively synthesizing so much of what is currently understood about the structure, function and evolution of the human head. (Brian T. Shea American Scientist 2011-03-01)By rooting his study in the basics of tissue mechanics and functional morphology, Lieberman does the spadework to which all such studies aspire but few achieve--and makes that task seem elegant and effortless. (Henry Gee Nature 2011-03-17)Daniel Lieberman marshals diverse evidence to provide a comprehensive framework for understanding patterns of variation and covariation in the form, function, and phylogeny of the human head...The breadth and diversity of subject matter the volume will impart to the reader is particularly laudable. Lieberman's holistic approach is a welcome, if not requisite, strategy for addressing a multifarious biological system such as the human head. The book's focus on both hard- and soft-tissue components, consideration of how such elements correspond to one another, and comprehensive overview of external and internal influences on patterns of morphological variation and covariation clearly set the tone for how one might profitably investigate cranial evolution across all vertebrates. The introductions to myriad biological concepts, surveys of some modern approaches to outstanding paleoanthropological questions, and review of fossil evidence regarding evolutionary transformations in human skull form will enlighten readers of all backgrounds. The Evolution of the Human Head is an entertaining read...It contains a wealth of information relevant to human evolution. In doing so, it offers a wonderful entrée into many of the outstanding issues that will undoubtedly remain at the center of debates regarding human origins for years to come. (Matthew J. Ravosa Science 2011-09-16)

I'm a recently retired professor of human anatomy & physiology, and I wish I had had this text before retiring. I enjoyed reading this book as what is now only recreation for me rather than material for my courses, continuing to learn about the details and perspectives of the developmental and evolutionary changes leading to the adult human head that, frankly, I confess that I didn't know while teaching A&P for almost 40 years, and that's why I wish I had this book years ago in order to enhance the information that I otherwise could have offered my students. Oh, well. While I can't use it anymore for teaching, I highly recommend this book to current A&P faculty. And as an afterthought, although I cannot speak as an anthropologist, I would imagine that those in that field, both faculty and grad students, would also immensely appreciate the contents of this work.

The Evolution of the Human Head begins with Daniel E. Lieberman highlighting the movie nonlogic of Planet of the Apes that shows apes functioning in a human manner with ape heads, which I appreciated. Lieberman demonstrates the complexity and evolvability of the head as a structure and emphasizes that the various components interact with and affect each other in development throughout the book. The book covers bone structuring, organs, senses, diet, teeth, and the characteristics of living and fossil primates. Page 40 notes the importance of the gene Runx-2 (also known as Cbfa 1) that regulates osteoblast differentiation in intramembranous bones so that elevated levels of expression cause increased rates of bone production, and the gene's absence leads to a lack of bone formation; page 40 also notes the importance of the Sox9 transcription factor for the differentiation and proliferation of chondrocytes for endochondral bones. The differences in skull development from neonate to adult for the chimpanzee and the modern human are shown in Figure 4.3 on page 105, in Figure 4.7 on page 116, and in Figure 4.9 on page 125, showing the projecting effect of depository growth fields in the chimp's jaws and the nonprojecting effect of resorptive growth fields in the human's upper jaws and face and in the upper lower jaw. On page 215, Lieberman notes his interesting experiment of juvenile mini-pigs running on a treadmill everyday an hour a day for three months had thicker leg bones (which he expected) and thicker cranial vaults (which he did not expect) as a way of explaining the thinning of modern human skulls over the last few thousand years since the origins of agriculture by theorizing that exercise triggers a systemic growth response; my personal experience in running supports the experiment's results as I've concluded that the entire skeletal structure is strengthened from the strong impacts, noticing that even the neck bone feels significantly stronger from regular running. Page 248 notes the limiting effect of the derived, inactivated version of the MYH16 gene that causes smaller weaker muscles in modern humans. On page 350, Figure 9.5 shows the different positions of the foramen magnum for (a) Homo sapiens, (b) Australopithecus africanus, (c) Sahelanthropus tchadensis, and (d) Pan troglodytes. On page 555, Figure 13.7 contrasts a recent gracile modern-human skull (left, a male from Italy) with an older robust Pleistocene skull (right, Zhoukoudian, Upper Cave 101), showing the thicker, larger construction of the Pleistocene skull. On page 565, Figure 13.11 features a thin-plate spline transformation of a Homo erectus cranium (KNM-ER 3733) into a Homo heidelbergensis skull (average of Kabwe and Petralona) with arrows showing the required upward and downward directions of growth. On page 572, Figure 13.14 features a thin-plate spline transformation of a Homo heidelbergensis cranium (average of Kabwe and Petralona) into a Homo neanderthalensis skull (Monte Circeo) with arrows showing the required horizontal directions of growth. On page 575, Figure 13.16 features a thin-plate spline transformation of a Homo heidelbergensis cranium (Kabwe) into a Pleistocene Homo sapiens skull (average of Skhul V and Cro-Magnon I) with arrows showing the required upward and outward directions of growth for the cranium and the required inward contraction of the upper face. Lieberman's research also appears in "Ontogeny, Homology, And Phylogeny In The Hominid Craniofacial Skeleton: The Problem Of The Browridge" on pages 85-122 of Development, Growth and Evolution, Volume 20: Implications for the Study of the Hominid Skeleton (Linnean Society Symposium) and with Brandeis McBratney-Owen in "Postnatal Ontogeny Of Facial Position In Homo sapiens And Pan troglodytes" on pages 45-72 of Patterns of Growth and Development in the Genus Homo (Cambridge Studies in Biological and Evolutionary Anthropology).

Reader beware. While I greatly enjoyed Dr. Lieberman's book-- The Story of the Human Body: Evolution, Health and Disease--this volume is for a far more technical audience. Let me give you a sample:"The prosencephalic signaling center produces signaling factor (Shh and Fgf8) that induce neural crest cells surrounding the forebrain to differentiate into mesenchymal cells that make up the upper third of the face above the stomodeum..."If that all makes sense to you, then you are probably the right audience. But if not, think twice before investing.

The definitive text on the evolution of the human head. Meticulous detail written in a way that keeps you interested in turning the page.

This book contains vast information.

You'll need some training in anatomy and physiology to understand this book. I finally had to put it down for a while and move on to something else. I do, however, heartily recommend his other great work "evolution of the body".

I love how the information is broken down. Very informative!!!
