This is a very good "Jerry Mitchell" story, and fans of the series will like this novel. I gave it four stars instead of five because the novel includes a pretty draggy section that takes place in India that could have been told much more quickly -- this part of the book dragged on and on. Once the submarine action starts, this novel becomes quite good, and I enjoyed it. The interactions between the US and China seemed realistic, and Jerry Mitchell is as engaging as ever -- easily Larry Bond's best character.I thought that the reunion between the Russian and Indian former sub commanders, and Mitchell, was a bit too "good to be true" and I would have imagined a lot more in the "hard feelings" department between these chaps and Mitchell. Each reader can decide for him or her self.Overall I enjoyed this one a lot.

When a nuclear bomb explodes in Kashmir, the world immediates blames India, now in a shaky truce with Pakistan. The bomb takes out a Muslim terrorist camp and surrounding villages. But as national security adviser Joanna Patterson investigates, she finds the nuclear signature different from the bombs used by either India or Pakistan. Where did this bomb come from? Who detonated it? Do they have any more? And what are they planning to do with them? The answers lead to an Indian military cabal. Someone with crucial information will only talk to one person: American sub captain Jerry Mitchell, a former adversary whom he respects. So begins a surreptitious effort to expose the plot and stop it from starting nuclear war.I enjoyed how Bond draws together threads from the entire Mitchell saga - an Indian skipper whose sub he stalks in “Shattered Trident”, a Russian captain from “Cold Choices”, and a Soviet-era underwater nuclear dump from “Dangerous Ground” that Mitchell found out about on his first cruise. That was where he met Patterson, then a nuclear contamination specialist, and where she met her future husband, the sub’s captain and now a senator, Lowell Hardy. We all know, of course, that efforts to stymie the plot in port will fail, that a rogue submarine will set off on its mission, and that Mitchell will have to go after it.The submarine detail, as always, is very good - the strategy of the hunt, the attacks and countermeasures, and the deep reasoning that goes into every step.

Unlike Bond's previous books such as Cauldron, Vortex, Red Phoenix, and The Enemy Within, the authors show a shallow and almost indifferent understanding to the Indian executive structure. The authority over law enforcement and nuclear doctrine lies with the Prime Minister's Office, not the President (who has a largely ceremonial role). Some Indian names are either rare or fictitious, and the gender of one of the names (Sushma) is female, although the character is male. The authors do understand naval (and submarine in particular) warfare, and the tension is constant throughout. Some of the events are quite frankly incredulous, such as an accidental detonation, and the end to the refit of a major nuclear submarine being ordered by a single vice admiral, but it still reads well.Recommended if you're desperate, but don't expect the quality seen from Larry Bond in his previous works.

This book is part of a series regarding Jerry Mitchell as a US Navy nuclear attack submarine commander. The plots are always GeoPolitical but based on the current world situation all quite plausible. This adds to the realistic situations. In this novel, India, China and Russia are all involved in another possible war. The US attempts to remain neutral but once again gets dragged into having to take a role in trying to prevent an escalation.I found some of the dialogue from the Indian, Chinese, and Russian characters seeming stilted and unrealistic from some of the action sequences but perhaps that is just me thinking that.I enjoyed this book but do not think it is as good as the others in the series.

Larry Bond has developed Jerry Mitchell throughout this series and brought his relationship from his first cruise and discovery of the hidden nuclear missile in the arctic full circle in this novel. It is a very suspenseful novel as it develops the relationships he has made with his first Captain, the Russian Captain of the first Sub he defeated, the Indian Captain of the Sub he spared and him into a partnership to prevent a major War. Very suspenseful plot and who is good and bad guys are and their motive.

Pretty good read although a couple of times it got slow and almost dragged by. I was surprised by the plot in a few places and found it to be somewhat believable. I have been a Larry Bond fan for many years and have always found his books entertaining and very well worth the money and time one invests in reading them. Mr. Bond takes the time to do proper research and his military nomenclature is almost always correct.

I have always enjoyed this author's books but this was just unbearable to read. Bizarre dialog from Russians and Indian nationals, an equally bizarre plot, it was just torture. I kept at it as long as I could but I finally had to stop.

This was a pretty good read. The fifth book in the series sees some of the characters from the earlier books reappear. Of course the main cast is there too. It also ties up some of the loose threads from the previous Jerry Mitchell book. I enjoyed it.

He has exceptionally large ears.’ ‘What happens to this hero?’ I asked. ‘I don’t know,’ he said. ‘That’s why I want you to write it down, so we can find out.’ Well, Luke Bailey, three years later, here is the story of what happened to your exceptionally large-eared, unlikely hero."Timothy Basil Ering is the author and illustrator of THE STORY OF FROG BELLY RAT BONE, and he also created the cover image and interior black-and-white drawings for 33 SNOWFISH by Adam Rapp. Of his inspiration for the illustrations in The TALE OF DESPEREAUX, he says, "My mother may have been a mouse in her past life, as I watched her save and help so many mice in our house while I was growing up. Such a lovely story. The Amazon writeup says ages 7+, but I just finished reading this to my twin 6-year-olds. I did have to stop and explain some of the nuances, and some of the vocabulary, but they were hanging on every word -- and I looked forward to reading a couple of chapters every night before bedtime. As some reviewers have pointed out, there are some dark and sad elements to the story. There is loss and betrayal and cruelty. If you are uncomfortable exposing your kids to that, you might want to read this yourself before reading it to them, and think about how you will talk about those things. But there is also courage and forgiveness and kindness, and a lot of heart. You should be prepared to take your kids on a deeper emotional and moral journey than you'll find in most children's books, and if you're up for that, this book is a great guide and a brilliant tale.

We are Rocky’s Book Club, composed of 3rd, 4th & 5th graders. We read the book, “The Tale of Despereaux” and this is what we thought of it.Our favorite parts were when Despereaux the brave mouse falls in love with the Princess, and he is willing to do anything to save her from the evil rats. There were evil rats, a death in a family and plenty of perfidy in this story. But as the quest goes on, Despereaux becomes a brave mouse. The one thing we would caution to other readers, is that some parts are emotional and could bring you to tears. And sometimes it can be confusing the way the story goes backwards and forwards from the present tense. Would we recommend this book? Yes, if you think you’d like a story about a brave, little mouse who has such a big quest ahead of him. We rate this book at 5 stars.

I bought 10 or 11 of these for my third grade class to read together. We are loving it. A lot of big words. We have little dictionaries that we are making ourselves. Every time we come across a word they don't know, they add it to their dictionaries. The story line is great. Very interesting dichotomies about nature, and darkness and light.

I was required to read this book for a college course in Children's literature. I'm so glad To have read it! It is beautifully written. I read it in just over 2 hours. I can't wait to read it to my daughters. Note: there is another review that states the book is good but with a vivid description on the miggery Sow character being beaten. The reviewer states that this may be very upsetting to young readers. This may be true.i found the passage to be inexcusable and tragic but not horribly violent or rape level. (the girl is boxed on the ears. And over the course of years is deafened).

This was a cute story that we listened to on our way across the Nevada desert traveling from California to Boise Idaho. Plenty of open space on this trip and plenty of time to listen to a good book. My kids ages 8-12 really enjoyed it, as did I. A family friendly book.

We used this book as a read-aloud for our five year old. He absolutely loved it!Edit: I also read the first chapter aloud to my 3rd grade students and they were begging for more! Many of them commented that they'll be reading it on their own over the summer.

This is an honest post by me and Is not fake unlike others. Anyway, the tail of Despereaux by Kate DiCamillo is one of my favorite books of all the others I've ever read. As you may know, Despereaux the mouse, is the man character of the book. But the other mice treated him like he was not part of them, (which it proofs that at the beginning) but the important thing is that he saved the day-- wait what?!?!?!?! I didn't think he would try to save the princess pea from rats who usually eat mice which in my opinion to risky and wouldn't do it even if I was dared but if she we're my friend like Despereaux I would have to am I right but it just changed everything after he went to save her. That part made me think that he was out of his mind and that would be suicide but I also thought since he had a weapon he could also defend himself from the rats but think of how many there could be, there could be hundreds maybe even thousands of rats down there but he did what he had to do and went to save her. Like I would or somebody else would, "never leave a friend behind in any situation even if it's near death"and Despereaux did just that to save the princess Pea. P.s. I loved the book and how it had these turning points in it!! Keep up the good work :D

I liked this story for it's simplicity. The brave tale of a little mouse...A mouse who was willing to use weapons. Yes, even kill for his beliefs~ even before his small community turns against him. In my opinion, DiCamillo, did spend a bit too much time on a certain rat villain... In fact, she must have cared for him as much as our title hero, Despereaux, which makes for some long passages. However, this book is still a very strong one.Definitely, worth reading!

This book changed my life. When Dad was diagnosed with Alzheimers, my 4 sisters and I were faced with the daunting task of trying to understand and prepare for what was ahead. What is so amazing is how many "pre-conceived notions" there are about this disease that influence our decisions and behaviors. The media, friends who have been in this situation and just our own distorted perceptions all play a roll. What a difference it has made to get a grasp on my dad's "reality". We have been able to avoid so many of the troublesome behaviors that are sometimes exhibited by Alzheimers sufferers, just be behaving properly, ourselves.Who knew that the way we speak to and approach someone with this disease could make such a difference in the way they behave and react. If you are facing this mind-boggling life situation, do yourself a favor...get this book, read it cover to cover, read it again and then insist that everyone who is a caregiver or has contact with your Alzheimers patient read it too. It will make a huge difference!

This book -The 36-hour Day - Completely Revised and Updated, helped me remain sane while I took care of my darling husband, as he suffered from Alzheimer's disease and passed away from this disease. You use as a reference guide. Having a problem with patient? Go to the index, look up your problem and turn to the correct page and do what the book says. Simple, EZ and wonderful bookThank you to the authors and all of their research and tips for the caregivers.!!Buy this book for your friends who are going through this problem, even though your friends can't see it themselves.

My husband has early-on Alzheimers and this book is a must read for getting the caregiver and family through it. Tells you what to expect and really helps you understand your own feeling about where you are. I am going to purchase a copy of every member of the family.

If you have a family member or friend that is showing signs of dimentia, you owe it to yourself to read this book. It's not easy to read, because the subject is a hard one if you are exposed to someone with diminishing mental functions, but that's not the books fault. I have read about 40% of it, and have already learned more than I have in all of my other research on the Internet and in reading a couple of other books and talking to many people. It's well written, the language is easy to read (even if the subject matter is difficult to face), and it provides factual information that is entirely relevant. There is a chapter that explains many of the behavior changes you may face, with excellent suggestions on how to deal with each of them. Most sound like common sense once you read them, some are counterintuitive, but I believe all are more effective than what I had been doing. Knowing the most loving responses to a situation doesn't always give you the ability to implement them in the moment, but knowing is better than ignorance. Parts of this book are worth reading a few times, as you learn and try things and come back and review what's working and what isn't in re-reading the key parts of the book. I highly recommend the book.

If you are living with or caring for anyone with memory loss, you owe it to them and to yourself to be aware of how to communicate, live with and be kind to them and yourself. I personally have had three people in my life with whom I either lived or cared for them in their homes. I only had this book for two of those three people and, I believe with all my heart, it helped me to be a better care taker for them. Patience is critical for the patient and well being is critical for the care giver. I'm not a professional care giver, just a daughter and a daughter-in-law who found myself in a position of caring for loved ones who needed help. Care givers also need help and this book tells it like it is.This book helped me to identify when my mother started having problems with her memory; things that I thought were mood swings or behavior issues but were actually the onset of memory loss. This book taught me how to care for my loved ones and myself. It showed me what I needed to do to make changes in living arrangements and gave me guidelines to financial issues. We all need help sometime and this book is a great one for just that reason. This book taught me that I could not do it alone and to seek out and ask for help for my loved one(s) and myself.

For anyone even remotely connected with a person or persons who have dementia or Alzheimer's, this book is a must-read. The first couple of chapters provide much insight into what these diseases are and how to help those suffering with them. Being a caregiver is a huge burden on a person, and understanding the person for whom you are caring is not an intuitive task. When a person's memory begins to fade, their actions no longer follow a normal path. This book provides the caregiver with the ability to understand what they are dealing with and what the diseased person is living with. If you are a caregiver, and even if your loved one is in a memory care facility, this book will help you to understand what that person is experiencing.

This is a MUST for anyone going through this with their spouse, mother, father, or grandparents. You think you understand the problem until you read this manual. It will become your best guide through a difficult time.

I buy these books to give to friends and customers that have a loved one with ALZ. My Mom and Grandparents had ALZ and I can promise you, it will make you feel better and help you understand what your loved ones are going through. It explains things in an easy to understand fashion and will give you some peace of mind. I urge anyone out there with any interest in ALZ at all to purchase this book first.
