This book explains why "Made In China" means whatever you bought is probably going to fall apart. And more interestingly, why Chinese business culture is unlikely to change even as they grow more prosperous and technologically adept. And why--for all its reputation for poor quality--Westerners keep going back to China to do business. One Western sucker after another goes to China and gets snookered into a deceitful business marriage that turns bad at the moment divorce becomes too expensive to contemplate. (The Chinese work that angle masterfully.) Now I understand why when merchandise breaks, deteriorates, quits working, or otherwise disappoints, the "Made In China" label explains it all.

I have done business in China since 1986. I know from experience how tricky and dangerous it is, especially for the newcomer. Curiously Mr. Midler refers to suppliers in Shantou (Canton Province) and I too have many suppliers there. Apparently this behavior amongst the Chinese is across the board no matter what product you work with. And they don't care no matter what threats or promises you make. I actually had one supplier who told me he would no longer sell to me because "you complain too much"! No loss to me, easily replaced you can be sure. Communists or not, the almighty greenback is king in China but as Mr. Midler makes very clear, it is not going to get you what you think you contracted for. Something close, maybe, but not right on target. The Chinese screwed up so many of my shipments that I got the distinct impression that the translaters were interpreting my directions, not translating them. So I spent years learning to speak Mandarin. I am totally fluent now, have often been mistaken for being Chinese on the telephone by those who had not yet met me. No matter, I told them straight out what I wanted in their own language and STILL they basically did it wrong to shave off a few bucks to their advantage. I could never understand that way of thinking, in America we keep the customers happy to perpetuate our business with them, we do not consistently antagonize them. This book will open your eyes if you want to do business in China and if you are already there you cannot help but agree with everything he says. Pay close attention, he knows what he is talking about. They will go behind your back and try to deal directly with your customer, they will yes you to death and then do whatever they please without any regard for you or your customer. I can offer dozens of examples but the one that most illustrates this is the supplier who sent the advance samples for approval, they were perfect. He then went and made the million piece order to his own liking. It was a Halloween item to be made in Orange and Black, the 1000 piece advance samples were right on the money. When the order came in, it was made in Red and Blue. They told us the factory boss thought Orange and Black was a terrible color combination so he made what he thought was pretty. Hence we had a million red and blue product with ghosts and goblins and all printed on them, in red and blue and the words "Happy Halloween". THAT is when we transferred half our entire production of all products to India. We still do some business in China but had I read this book twenty years ago I never would have gotten involved in China at all!I highly recommend this book, it is all true and frightening so use it well and be aware. Be very aware.

This reflects my experiences as a dropshipper using Chinese products. Many of the middlemen I worked through using Ali Express were good, honest people. But a significant percentage (20%) fit this book very well. Deteriorating quality over time, deceptive product pictures, long shipping times, and indifferent customer service, until I would threaten a dispute, then the tears and begging start. If you want to do business with China, this is a must read.

The author is an MBA who speaks Mandarin and lives in China. He works as a "middleman" between American importers and Chinese manufacturers. The first (approximately) 200 pages consist of entertaining anecdotes of his experiences in dealing with Chinese manufacturers. It is primarily a story of dishonesty and cunning--not incompetence-- on the part of the Chinese. Subtly, by these anecdotes, the author draws us further into the question of WHY the Chinese manufacturers behave as they do towards Americans and other importers of their products? The remaining (approximately) 50 pages provides a convincing answer.Everywhere one turns these days, we are told that the Chinese are the new master race, that China will bury the US and dominate the world, etc. This book is the furthest thing from a political polemic, but an incidental effect of reading it leads one to question how China could ever manage that?

Review

PRAISE FOR THE PISCES:  "In recounting one woman’s star-crossed relationship with a folkloric beau, Ms. Broder has crafted a modern-day mythology for women on the verge — if everything on the surface stops making sense, all you need to do is dive deeper.”—The New York Times“A page turner of a novel…The Pisces is many things: a jaunt in a fabulous voice, a culture critique of Los Angeles, an explicit tour of all kinds of sex (both really good and really bad)…Broder’s voice has a funny, frank Amy Schumer feel to it, injected with moments of a Lydia Davis-type abstraction.”—The Washington Post" 'The Pisces' convincingly romances the void."—Jia Tolentino, The New Yorker“The dirtiest, most bizarre, most original works of fiction I’ve read in recent memory."—Vogue.com “Explosive, erotic, scathingly funny…Its interspecies romantic intrigue buttresses a profound take on connection and longing that digs deep.”—Entertainment Weekly“Bold, virtuosic, addictive, erotic – there is nothing like The Pisces. Between a broken-up Sappho academic and a Venice-beach merman, Melissa Broder miraculously captures everything absurd and pure about falling in love. I have no idea how Broder does it, but I loved every dark and sublime page of it.”—Stephanie Danler, author of Sweetbitter "Funny and dark, vicious and tender, The Pisces is a sexy and moving portrait of a woman longing for connection and pleasure in our strange and alienating world. I can’t stop thinking about it."—Edan Lepucki, author of Woman No. 17“The Pisces is an intellectual, enthralling voyage into one woman’s swirling mind as she brushes with the extraordinary.”—Refinery29   “Time for the easiest game of ‘if you loved this movie, read this book’ ever: If you loved ‘The Shape of Water,’…you should definitely read The Pisces by Melissa Broder, a book about fish sex…[The Pisces offers] an exploration of how deeply impacted we all are in the corrupted world, and how far we’d have to swim to escape it.”—Huffington Post“Melissa Broder joins the mermaid craze, but she does so with a focus on how our fantasies can help us move past romantic codependency.”—Bitch“The debut novel by poet and essayist Broder (So Sad Today) is an alternately ribald and poignant fantasy…Broder makes her merman a more complex and believable character than most romantic heroes; her novel is a consistently funny and enjoyable read.”—Publisher's Weekly"It’s a knife-tip dissection of 21st-century anomie, and its clear-sighted depiction of muddy-headed people makes for bracing reading – like a dip in the freezing, salty sea."—The Guardian“The Pisces is as hilarious as it is heartbreaking, with a keenly satirical eye towards our culture of therapy and recovery.  It also features a bunch of lady-and-fish sex, which is apparently having a moment.”—Vulture.com, "10 Books We Can't Wait to Read This Spring"“In her first novel, essayist, poet, and Twitter-star Broder (So Sad Today, 2016; Last Sext, 2016) wraps timeless questions of existence —those that gods and stars have beseeched to answer for millennia—in the weirdest, sexiest, and most appealing of modern packaging.  Brilliant and delightful.”—Booklist, starred“Broder delivers her signature hilarity, intelligence, and spot-on examination of the human (et al.) condition.”—Marie Claire"No one writes about love like Melissa Broder, who captures the feverish obsession with both the lover and the self in hilarious, mesmerizing detail. I scarfed The Pisces in handfuls, surprised and delighted by every inventive detail and compelled by the lucid insights and chillingly familiar compulsions of the narrator. This is a book for every smart person who has made very bad decisions, who thought love might save them from themselves, who has been hypnotized by pleasure and become willing to give up everything for just one more taste."—Melissa Febos, author of Whip Smart and Abandon Me  "A peerless combination of heartbreak and horniness, this novel's journey through the surreal throes of desire is a trip you'll want to take again and again. Broder's wit, vulnerability, and brilliance make me delirious with gratitude. What manic pleasures, perfectly rendered in a naked confessional voice, await you. It's impossible not to read (and revere) this book obsessively."—Alissa Nutting, author of Made for Love"The Pisces has everything – devastating honesty about love, intimacy and loneliness, tonally perfect writing, propulsive plotting, laugh out loud hilarity, and genuinely hot sex with a merman."—Emily Gould, author of Friendship“The Venice Beach of The Pisces is familiar at first, but it quickly transforms into a new place in which fantasy can become reality overnight. I love how Melissa Broder navigates the anticipation of lust, the consequences of love, the lure of self-destruction, and the indecision between what seems right and what seems crazy. This book is for anyone that’s wondered where their longing will take them next.”—Chelsea Hodson, author of Tonight I’m Someone Else“This anticipated first novel from poet/essayist Broder is hilariously narrated…Those wo take the plunge will be rewarded with a wild ride from a narrator whose sardonic outlook reveals profound truths about the nature of the self.”—Library Journal“The sex scenes are often funny (“his balls were delicious, like raw oysters”), but Broder balances the weirdness of merman erotica with a realistic look at depression and recovery.  The Pisces is perfect for anyone who wishes The Shape of Water as more explicit, but is also great for those looking for a novel that gets real about mental health, with a little fantasy thrown in.”—Bust Magazine"I've long been a Melissa Broder fan but I had no idea a fabulist novelist lived in her too. I've never quite read anything like the surreal merman romantic comedy that is The Pisces! Broder has always been a simultaneously out-of-this-world & very-much-in-this-world poet/comic, so it's a wild delight to watch her transition to modern-day mythologist.  Sappho and Tinder, mermaid porn and nervous breakdowns, the banal and the bananas gloriously litter this uncanny marvel that is pretty impossible to put down."—Porochista Khakpour, author of Sick: A Memoir and the novels The Last Illusion and Sons & Other Flammable Objects“Starting with Sappho and ripping through the Los Angeles lovelorn, this exquisite story of romantic obsession deftly blends existential terror with sexy surrealism for a one-sitting absolute thrall. This book has my number so hard, I’m waiting for its midnight texts."—Amelia Gray, author of Isadora"The characters in The Pisces are so finely drawn and palpably real. These are some of the most real, relatable merman sex scenes I have ever read in any book."—Megan Amram, TV Writer and author of Science...For Her! “Melissa Broder has officially written the modern myth: a hilarious, surreal tale of addiction and academia, depression and desire, mania and melancholy. Through the eyes of our merman-obsessed anti-heroine, we become attuned to both the poignancy and pointlessness of the human experience—from illusory ambition to unruly erotic fantasy. (Broder writes sex like no one else I’ve read.) The Pisces will have you LOL-ing while you’re longing while you’re cringing while you’re philosophizing—this is what it feels like to exist, and to attempt love, in the deluded torpor that is our time.”—Molly Prentiss, author of Tuesday Nights in 1980 "Dazzling, bold, unforgettable—Melissa Broder has written a seismic love story for the incurably curious. —Kristen Iskandrian, author of Motherest"By turns fearless and perverted, full of desolation and of hope, The Pisces is a novel that delves head on into the many dark, absurd facets of human connection and coping in search of meaning and comes back bearing fantastic flashes of a twisted rom-com surreality only Melissa Broder's gemstone-studded brain could conjure up."—Blake Butler, author of There Is No Year        PRAISE FOR SO SAD TODAY:   "These essays are sad and uncomfortable and their own kind of gorgeous. They reveal so much about what it is to live in this world, right now."—Roxane Gay   “If Melissa Broder weren’t so fucking funny I would have wept through this entire book. Love, sex, addiction, mental illness and childhood trauma all join hands and dance in a circle, to the tune of Melissa’s unmatched wit and dementedly perfect take on this terrifying orb we call home.”—Lena Dunham   "At once devastating and delightful, this deeply personal collection of essays (named for Broder's popular Twitter handle) is as raw as it is funny."―Cosmopolitan "If her Twitter account is a darkly comic 'creative way to distract myself and cope,' as [Melissa Broder] describes it, then her essays are deeper excavations of that same mind."―Elle "Her writing is deeply personal, sophisticated in its wit, and at the same time, devastating. SO SAD TODAY is a portrait of modern day existence told with provocative, irreverent honesty."―Nylon "Instead of supersizing her angsty tweets, Broder presents a dizzying array of intimate dispatches and confessions...She has a near-supernatural ability to not only lay bare her darkest secrets, but to festoon those secrets with jokes, subterfuge, deep shame, bravado, and poetic turns of phrase."―New York Magazine "It would have been easy for Broder to stay anonymous and simply publish a book of @SoSadToday's most popular tweets, but instead, she chose to challenge herself in what turned out to be a triumph of unsettlingly relatable prose."―VanityFair.com "Under her beloved Twitter persona So Sad Today, Broder is probably the Internet's most powerful merchant of feelings."―GQ.com "What a decadent, hilarious, important, devastating book this is. SO SAD TODAY will explode on impact in your mind."―Jami Attenberg, author of The Middlesteins  "With irreverence and wit, Melissa Broder confronts the most hidden and grotesque parts of herself...Reading her, it seems that we're all fucked-up, but it's because of this that we connect with each other, fall in love, find contentment, and maybe even a little happiness."―Sarah Gerard, author of Binary Star "Irreverent, ballsy, impossible to put down. With courage and humor, Broder shows us that the underbelly of self-awareness is the existential sads."―Courtney Maum, author of I Am Having So Much Fun Here Without You PRAISE FOR LAST SEXT:   “The poems of Melissa Broder pull off a strange and compelling trick: to exist meatily, viscerally, and even bloodily at the center of a void. Holes thump through the pages, blankness crunches bone, zeros growl with hunger. Each line is a little heartbeat hurling down the abyss.”―Patricia Lockwood, author of Priestdaddy “Melissa Broder is absolutely one of the most important poets writing today. Her poems eviscerate the reader with their misty and murky charm, with their ability to say what is and not what should be, for their love of life and the sensual, for their knowledge of what it is like to be a person right now. Last Sext is a master work, a text of brilliance written in a dusky field, for all of us. ‘Can you feel it?’ is what it asks us. And we must answer: for chrissakes, of course, yes.”―Dorothea Lasky“Broder’s poems offer a postmodern twist on the confessional, and they push for action in the face of despair.”―Publishers Weekly

"These things never happened but always are."An instant classic. How to describe a story that is smart, incredibly funny, profoundly sad and highly erotic? Oh yes, and there’s a merman, too! I love this author!Honestly, I have been having a hard time letting go of Lucy and Theo. A book that mixes humor and eroticism AND Greek mythology? A THOUSAND YESSES TO THE PISCES!! Lucy is despondent (but still neurotically funny) after a messy break-up with her long-time boyfriend. She leaves Phoenix where she has been working on a dissertation for years, to travel to L.A. to dog-sit for her sister Annika for the summer.Lucy is forced to enter group therapy (which is hilarious and tragic at the same time) and is not really supposed to be dating yet at all. So of course because she has an addictive personality she immediately throws herself into the online dating pool with sometimes disastrous results."I came to know and love into another kind of stranger: a physical manifestation of time and letting oneself go eclipsing both the stranger and the honeybear until they all but disappeared. I felt irate. How dare he not give a f---? What a luxury, the luxury of a man. The luxury of someone who looked at the ravages of time and went,“Eh.”Lucy's sister's house is on the beach and one night Lucy encounters a gorgeous surfer boy named Theo. He only comes out at night when she is sitting on the rocks, looking out into the wild Pacific Ocean."I looked out at the ocean. It was as though I hadn’t noticed it before, or hadn’t wanted to see it. I was scared of its wild ambivalence, so powerful and amorphous, like the depression itself. It didn’t give a f--- about me. It could eat me without even knowing."Lucy may be despondent but she is still funny and sexy and very desirable. It is hard to adequately describe the hilarity and poignancy of Melissa Broder's writing but every single page was a delight. Lucy becomes completely entranced by gorgeous but elusive Theo:"His is chest was hairless, and I noticed that the color of his nipples matched perfectly his lips, like pencil erasers. He looked like he was twenty-one, at most. If this was death then death was hot."Lucy still hooks up with men she meets online but is strangely drawn back to Theo and their deep connection. She eventually comes to accept who he is after several passionate kisses and much conversation. And who he really is doesn't seem so unbelievable after all."Was there any wildness anywhere, or was all of it inhabited by tech dudes now, juice places and blow-dry bars? Had anything been left undiscovered, or did the Internet snatch it all up the moment it existed? Nothing remained untouched. Or maybe some things weren’t completely mapped out yet and there was still a little room for the mystery. Maybe some strange and beautiful boy could still pop out of the sea and surprise you."This book is so funny that I was crying from laughter throughout most of it. Melissa Broder has a magical way with words. I just want to scream from the rooftops for everyone to read this book! Yes it is weird but it is wild and beautiful and life-affirming. And the description of Venice beach life and the L.A. dating scene was hysterically funny and poignant.“I’m back,” he said. “How have the dates been treating you?”“Disgusting,” I said.“Ah, too bad.”“Are you real?” I asked. He laughed. “I suffer like I’m real. I have wants like I’m real. I fear that I will be unliked or unloved. Men, women, I think that maybe everyone wants the same thing.”This book is funny, sexy, magical and very, very real. Even though there is a merman. It is about everyone's quest for love and to be loved. 'The Pisces' is absolutely one of my favorite books and not to be missed!!"I felt the Earth rotating around us, or that we were the planet—spinning on its axis. In my head came a deep buzz of the Earth again and I didn’t know if I was actually humming out loud or if it was all inside me. This is how you exist in the world, I thought. This is how you are alive."

Brilliant. A book about fishy love is not something I'd ever consider but knowing how smart and witty Broder is, I wanted to give it a go. I read it all in one sitting. Yes, there are some sexy, sexy scenes with a merman (this is a good thing), but this is all intertwined with the pain of addition and reckoning with the self. The themes of Sappho and allusions to Greek mythology are perfectly placed into a modern context wihtout being heavy handed. Simply put, I LOVED it.

I was expecting a light and pleasant beach read but got a depressing novel with heavy themes and multiple descriptions of unpleasant one night stands that were far too long and detailed. The main character has very few redeaming qualities and is more than unlikable. The depressing realism outweighs the fantastical aspects of the novel, and the ending barely makes up for the unpleasant hopelessness that saturated this book. The writing style is oversimplifed, and doesn't suit the subject matter. I have given it three stars because I can see how someone might like it, but the description is misleading and this book would be best for someone with a dark sense of humour that can relate to a character that is so lost in life that they create devastating harm.

I'm still talking mad ish about this book. This is a type of book in which you are either going to love it or you are going to hate it. You have to have some sort of uncouth sense of humor to just let your bun down and enjoy the tongue-in-cheek scenarios that this book puts our protagonist in.And it will also help if you are cynical about the dating scene and living in the Westside of LA to feel extra connection to this book. (NO lie, this book mentioned about the salon where my friend works and where I got my last haircut. Thought it was cool to take a mental walk with the protagonist on familiar streets.) But I digress...What cracks me up is that in my goodreads friends list and in the book clubs I am part of, several of my friends are into supernatural/fantasy eroticas. I had mentioned it and have often teased them about it. Well, I guess I unknowingly joined their team as this is a merman erotica, not a cynical jab at modern dating involving astrological signs. Before you start, ask your self if you are ready. I already gifted this book to a couple of friends who can get a laugh out of it.

Not gonna lie. Lucy gets annoying as hell. But the fantasy is rich and the sex is great. Mermaids and mermen are hot. Mermen are still men and, turns out, equally as disappointing.

I haven’t read fiction in 10 years because I get bored easily. When I found out Melissa Broder wrote a fictional book, I knew the time had come for me to give fiction another try. So Sad Today helped make me feel less alone in the world, and I’m happy to say that The Pisces did too. It has that same ‘grappling with the void inside us’ exploration but with raw, real sex scenes and Greek mythology. I may be forcing my boyfriend to try some merman role playing in the near future.... And I’ll definitely be reading more fiction from here on out!
