If Picasso Painted a Snowman, by Amy Newbold

From School Library Journal

Gr 1–4—Did you ever wonder how Vincent van Gogh would paint a snowman? Or how Georgia O'Keeffe might depict the frozen subject? This book shows the reader how 17 well-known artists might illustrate this particular subject matter. The story begins with the simple way most know: draw three circles, add the eyes, triangle shaped nose, and a dotted smile. Then things become interesting. A snowman shape is incorporated into a famous artist's painting or one is created in his/her style. Instead of melting clocks, as in Salvador Dalí's painting, we see liquefied snowmen. There is a pointillism snowman in the style of Georges Seurat, and you'll never look at Grant Wood's American Gothic painting the same again. The artwork is excellent as the illustrator captures the artist's style perfectly. The slight amount of text is just enough to engage young readers. A small hamster is the guide throughout. He dons a beret, mustache, or a bandaged ear (a tribute to van Gogh). The hamster may not be on every page, but when he is present, he adds humor. The end of the book includes information about the artists named and a bit about their individual styles of art. VERDICT An excellent way to introduce children to classic artists and their styles. It also might encourage budding artists to think outside the box and create images in their own unique style.—Barbara Spiri, Southborough Library, MA

Review

“With big, brightly colored original illustrations that range from evocative to downright authentic-looking, the Newbolds introduce 17 “modern” (more or less) painters by suggesting how each might have depicted a snowman. A smiling hamster wielding a paintbrush conducts viewers through a gallery that begins with a cubist “Picasso,” looks back to a vague shape in a Turneresque blizzard, and then darts in no particular order from Lichtenstein and O’Keeffe to Klimt, Pollock, Van Gogh (where the hamster acquires a bandage on its ear), Sonia Delaunay, and, finally, Grant Wood, with a version of American Gothic. Captions identify each artist, and appended biographical sketches add further information. For the most part, the artists make up a familiar roster of dead, white, male Europeans or Americans, and an inviting blank canvas at the end may prompt some would-be Picassos to draw directly on the page. Still, along with introductions to some significant figures in art history, readers will come away with clear notions of their characteristic styles, as well as visual differences between schools of art. ” - John Peters, Booklist“ Lynn: Most of us, if asked to paint a snowman, would start with three circles, then add a few details. But Amy and Greg Newbold ask what a snowman would look like in the hands of famous painters. If Picasso Painted a Snowman (2017) is their delightful answer. A chubby little hamster takes readers through a series of snowman pictures, all painted in the styles of iconic artists, from Picasso to Jackson Pollack. Vibrant, imaginative, and playful, this charming book is an art history survey course in a picture book. Newbold has done a terrific job using images and concepts kids can easily grasp to demonstrate the individual styles of 17 artists. The back matter is just as well done as the illustrations. Short biographies of each artist focus on their style. Greg Newbold’s Advice for Artists adds three wonderful tips for young aspiring artists. And a section called “Meet the Artists” notes that none featured in the book actually painted a snowman. I loved all the illustrations here, so choosing a favorite would be almost impossible. I’m currently wavering between Gustav Klimt’s and Van Gogh’s examples. How about you?Cindy:  I don’t know, Lynn. I like your choices a lot, but Roy Lichtenstein’s comic snowman sure packs a wallop. BLAM! As I write my part of this post on a particularly difficult morning, I feel a lot like the surreal snowmen in the Salvador Dali version. Here’s how Amy describes their riff on melting clocks in Dali’s famous painting The Persistence of Memory: In Salvador Dali’s winter fantasy, snowmen drip like melty cheese. The hamster’s Dali-esque curved mustache is the piece de résistance! (And just one example of rodent humor on display.) My very favorite spread, though, might be one with a blank canvas propped on an easel with an encouragement to copy the page and make your own snowman. This is a ready-made art lesson for readers of any age. I want to get out my paints and create my own. Kids will, too. This book is sure to sell in art museum gift shops, but make sure your library or classroom or child or grandchild has one too...and some art supplies! ” - Cindy Dobrez and Lynn Rutan, Booklist Reader“This book was such a treat! Not only did it have an example of how Picasso may have depicted a snowman, it also had examples of how many other well-known artists such as Van Gogh and Monet would have painted their snowmen as well. If you’re a fan of the arts, or have seen many famous paintings, the beautiful illustrations in this book will certainly look familiar to you. This is a great book to introduce kids to the different styles of various famous artists. It’s perfect for little aspiring artists, and a treat for older ones!” - Shifa, Children's Book Council Staff Picks“ There are short ones and tall ones and fat ones and skinny ones. All sorts of items, natural and man-made are added to further distinguish their physical characteristics. Just as there are no two snowflakes alike, there are no two snowwomen, snowmen, snow children or snow creatures alike. Each one is as unique as its maker. An exploratory adventure begins when an unseen narrator says: But if Pablo Picasso painted a snowman it would look like . . . A page turn reveals the rather satisfied hamster holding a paint brush covered in red paint with a tube of red paint spilling out next to him. On the opposite page is a snowman portrayed in the style known as Cubism. Elements are rearranged and removed. Excitement follows page by page. Within a murky haze we are asked to find a single snowman. A superhero snowman comic-book style swings a fist as a loud BLAM! in red letters explodes on the canvas. A stark desert landscape hosts a snowman with a skull and antlers for a head and a lush floral array in its center. Can you identify the three artists?A brightly colored quilt wraps around a snow family. Haystacks stand with snowmen like sentries. Pablita Velarde's birds keep company with her snowman. Is there a snowman hidden in the Jackson Pollack splatters? No one can fail to recognize the painter who might have depicted snowmen languishing like wet noodles on an alien plain or the two snow people standing in front of buildings straight out of Americana, the one holding a shovel upright. With each revelation our knowledge grows.Artist Greg Newbold through meticulous research replicates the techniques and styles of each of the seventeen painters focusing on those most notable works. Some of his illustrations span a single page, edge to edge. Others appear as a large portion of an artist's canvas. Several cover two pages crossing the gutter. Two are placed playfully with overlapping corners, as if waiting to be hung on a wall.Art educators and those interested in art are going to be thrilled with If Picasso Painted a Snowman written by Amy Newbold with illustrations by Greg Newbold. In fact, even those who don't believe they like art will enjoy this book. The premise of using a snowman, in which most can identify, to present the artists is a marvelous idea. On the final two pages, the hamster invites you to paint your own picture on a page showing a blank easel you can replicate. The next six pages give more information about the artists. As a final note Greg gives artists three key points of advice.  It might be fun to ask students to research other artists and create snowmen as they would. If you are doing a Mock Caldecott unit, you might feature snowmen as drawn by Caldecott artists. This title would be a welcome addition in your professional and personal book collections. ” - Xena's Mom, Librarian's Quest“... This a wonderful book! Many of the readers of MC have kids or are aunts and uncles. This book is for you and yours. It is a great introduction to a large variety of artists and their work, but also opens up the imagination to all the possibilities of different artists paint, but also how different thinkers might approach the same challenge.” - Howard Lyon, Muddycolors.blogspot“ The Newbolds use the example of a snowman to drive home the idea that “not all artists paint the same.” With a cherubic hamster as guide, who wields paintbrushes and mugs for readers, Amy Newbold imagines how 17 famous artists might have painted a snowman, giving her husband a chance to try out each artist’s style. A large snowman cuddles two smaller ones, all wrapped up in a quilted blanket, in a Klimt-inspired spread; in a remake of Dalí’s The Persistence of Memory, flattened snowmen replace drooping clocks. Newbold keeps the text short and punchy (“Blam! Roy Lichtenstein’s snow hero saves the day!”), and she covers a range of artistic styles, from Monet’s impressionism to Klee’s abstract art and the “flat” images of Pueblo artist Pablita Velarde. A blank easel invites readers to contribute their own snowmen, and the book concludes with capsule biographies of the featured painters. The hamster’s antics can be a bit much (he’s shown with a bandage over a missing ear on the Van Gogh page), but in all it’s an inviting introduction to a range of important painters. Ages 6–12. (Oct.) ” - Publishers Weekly“ Did you ever wonder how Vincent van Gogh would paint a snowman? Or how Georgia O’Keeffe might depict the frozen subject? This book shows the reader how 17 well-known artists might illustrate this particular subject matter. The story begins with the simple way most know: draw three circles, add the eyes, triangle shaped nose, and a dotted smile. Then things become interesting. The end of the book includes information about the artists named and a bit about their individual styles of art. VERDICT An excellent way to introduce children to classic artists and their styles. It also might encourage budding artists to think outside the box and create images in their own unique style ” - School Library Journal Express“A range of art styles is explored in this picture book that invites readers to imagine how various artists would paint a snowman...The examples of the art mimic some of the artists' famous paintings but incorporate imagined snowmen into them. For example, Dali's "snowmen drip like melted cheese" in a double-page spread that emulates "The Persistence of Memory" with flattened, drooping snowmen rather than timepieces depicted on the surreal landscape...A closing spread with a blank easel nicely invites readers to copy it and make their own snowman painting. Endnotes provide further context about the artists...A playful introduction to various art movements...” - Kirkus

LIKE MOST PEOPLE I AM PRONE TO NEGLECT READING MY BIBLE. SO WHEN I GOT MY KINDLE AND CAME ACROSS "THE BIBLE STUDY TOOL" I REDEDICATED MYSELF TO GET BACK TO THE BIBLE. THIS TOOL IS THE BEST I HAVE ENCOUNTERED. THE QUESTION AND ANSWERS AT THE END OF EACH CHAPTER ARE GREAT. I RECOMMEND EVERY SUNDAY SCHOOL TEACHER TO GET THESE BOOKS.THEY WILL BLESS YOUR LIFE.

It was a light way to go through the book of Romans. I did enjoy the style of questions and that the Biblical text was included.

Goes right along with the other Roman commentaries I own very indepth

Well written Bible study tool. I love the quizzes at the end of each chapter, they are just difficulty enough to force me to read the text more thoroughly.

I'm fairly certain if I were reviewing this in paper book form, I'd rate it higher. It is difficult to use in Kindle form. Mostly that is the limits of the Kindle, not the book.

I like it because it has questions at the end of each chapter of the book.I would buy more like this.

This is a great way to learn the Bible. You read a chapter and then answer the questions, great study tool.

I like using the Bibleeye Study Guides as a tool for teaching the Gospel to my children, and it is a fun activity for the whole family after dinner!

Integrating the Inner City: The Promise and Perils of Mixed-Income Public Housing Transformation

Review

“Integrating the Inner City is the first serious, empirically based, book-length analysis of mixed-income housing and is destined to become the leading study in its field for years to come. Drawing on exceptional research, Chaskin and Joseph carefully ground the book in theory while providing rich data to support their arguments along the way. Few works have examined life inside public mixed-income communities, making this book a valuable addition that will be highly sought after by the many people concerned with affordable housing.” (D. Bradford Hunt, author of Blueprint for Disaster: The Unraveling of Chicago Public Housing)“Integrating the Inner City rises above politics, profit-motives, and moralizing and offers a real look at how mixed-income communities are working and not working for the people who live in them. Chaskin and Joseph give us a rigorously empirical account of the translation of theory into practice, and the story is a sobering one. The buildings are new and the streets are safer, but poor residents still experience considerable social stigma and economic fragility. Meticulously researched, accessibly written, and powerfully argued, this book should guide public housing policy and our approach to racial and class integration for decades to come.” (Mary Pattillo, author of Black on the Block: The Politics of Race and Class in the City)“Chaskin and Joseph’s study of the promises and the limitations of The Chicago Plan for Transformation, the largest attempt at mixed-income public housing reform in the US, reveals a challenge that many urban planners do not foresee—the continued economic and social marginalization of the poor families who gain a place in mixed-income developments. Integrating the Inner City not only combines compelling data, based on six years of in-depth field research, and considerate theoretical arguments to describe and explain the problem of economic and social integration in these developments, it also suggests several positive actions that might be taken to address it. Chaskin and Joseph’s impressive study is a must-read.” (William Julius Wilson author of The Truly Disadvantaged: The Inner City, The Underclass, and Public Policy)“Clearly written and meticulously researched, the book gives readers a rare inside look at Chicago’s mixed-income developments and, in doing so, powerfully argues that mixed-income redevelopment is not the integrationist solution for curing urban poverty that it is often said to be. . . . Fascinating and timely, a must-read for those concerned with public policy and affordable housing.” (South Side Weekly)“Chaskin and Joseph explore the nature of social interaction and relationships among residents having different income and racial/ethnic backgrounds, observe tensions between integration and exclusion and poverty and development, argue that these mixed-income communities reproduce marginality and alienation, and conclude that a market-driven approach to public housing reform has led to physical improvements but has not brought major socioeconomic advantages to mixed-income communities. The authors suggest several actions that may contribute to better social integration, social mobility, and communities that are more inclusive. This volume makes an outstanding contribution to public housing policy, community development, and urban studies. Highly recommended.” (Choice)“Integrating the Inner City stands out because it does an outstanding job in providing an in-depth and comprehensive look at how mixed-income public housing reform is actually playing out in real places. Six years of fieldwork have produced a stellar product.” (Journal of the American Planning Association)“Integrating the Inner City provides a valuable, yet cautionary, tale about the current zeitgeist in public housing reform. . . . Chaskin and Joseph have produced a highly important work that adds greatly to our understanding of the benefits, limitations, and complex challenges involved in undertaking public housing reform. From a broader perspective, the book’s focus on the role of housing as a platform for poverty reduction is in line with growing academic interest in this topic.” (Social Service Review)“An ambitious, provocative book on the subject of what the authors call “contrived” integration. The aim is to expose the complications of an ‘integrationist agenda’—that is, the effort to integrate people of varying incomes in mixed-income housing developments. . . . The authors’ bottom line is that whatever benefits have been garnered—and there have been some—they do not outweigh the costs. The shift to market rate, mixed-income development essentially squandered limited public funds that might have been used to house more people in need.” (American Journal of Sociology)“[Chaskin and Joseph's] richly detailed, thoroughly researched work contributes substantially and enduringly to readers interested in urban sociology, urban planning, social inequality, public housing, antipoverty policies, marketplace ideologies, and the application of mixed-methods research to policy analysis.” (International Sociology)

This book shows us that Richard McKinley is a wonderful Pastel painter. But that was about all it does. "Top 100 Secrets" are still secret. It is just a come on to sign you up for their are course. Save your Yankee Dollars for something a little more informative.

I just got into pastel, had pastel pencils and mainly draw with all mediums. Into graphite, carbon, colour pencils mainly trying to do realism, but once I picked up a pastel pencils really loved the ability to create unusual drawings. Then got a cheap sample box of pastel blocks and wanted to learn how to use them. The pastel art that I do is more of a mixed media or I really like to do semi abstract work. This book was perfect for the style I want to learn for mixed media works and only pastel works. Just bought a set of Derwent pastel stick and waiting to get them, said they were harder than the usual soft pastels which are very powdery and messy, and the Derwents can also be used for fine detail work. I love this book and the style and would recommend it to anyone looking to learn about pastel drawing.

This is another "how to" book on pastel painting organized into chapters with a few additions and variations that make it a worthwhile purchase. For example, most technique books have an obligatory chapter on materials where the author discusses his preferences on pastels and supports. McKinley doesn't go there, but does include a nice piece on making your own supports rather than buying any number of pre made papers or boards. It should be noted this author has a signature selection of landscape pastels available from Great American Pastels but, to his credit, doesn't tout that particular brand. Instead he speaks briefly on the qualities he's looking for in developing his palette and encourages the reader/student to try many different brands to develop preferences. Also included is a rudimentary DVD (27+ min.) showing some basic steps in developing an under painting which will undoubtedly be useful to many who purchase the book. It should be noted that while this is a plus it's also a bit of advertising for other North Light/McKinley products as this author and his publisher have a couple DVD titles that I'm sure they'd be pleased for you to purchase. The bulk of the book covers basic drafting issues (focal point, rule of thirds, value, aerial perspective, etc.) and specific techniques involved with the pastel medium (under painting, strokes, surface texture). Filling the balance are sections on plein air painting, sketching, framing, air travel, and shipping of completed paintings. It should be noted the book covers a lot of ground not mentioned in other pastel guides and is well illustrated with the author's work as well as relevant photos of products or processes discussed in each section. As I understand it all of this material comes from the author's blog/web site and makes the book more a hodgepodge of topics rather than a progressive art instructional. While this allows a lot of random information to be included it doesn't allow for much basic pastel instruction (no step by step demos) which is why, I suppose, it's called "Pastel Pointers" rather than something more specific to pastel painting. I'll leave it for someone else to determine if there's "100 secrets" in the book as I don't know where amazon came up with that title; my copy is just labeled "Pastel Pointers: Top Secrets for Beautiful Pastel Paintings". Regardless, from a purely informational standpoint it's recommended and the only reason I didn't give it 5 stars is discussed in the following paragraph. While his paintings have an attractive atmospheric quality to them I feel they also have a generic sameness that becomes a bit predictable page after page. He seems to paint the same light conditions in every scene and has a signature palette incorporating violet highlights in his panels. If you've ever seen a gallery full of Thomas Kinkade prints you'll know what I mean. This is not a comment on artistic merit, rather just my preference in art. If you admire his style and technique which relies upon a significant under painting, then he would be a fine painter to emulate, though I personally prefer the work of Richard McDaniel. McDaniel has several books out, also has a signature selection of Great American Pastels and, like McKinley, comes from a drawing/oil painting background. I might suggest that you get a copy of "Landscape" (first choice) or "On Location" by Richard McDaniel and compare it with McKinley's work to gauge which artist you feel more comfortable with.

A large fraction of this book has almost nothing to say about pastel painting technqiues, being instead about the art business. There's even a section on listening to music while you work, and a section on doing your income taxes. On pastel painting itself, there is a lot about materials and staying organized, perhaps less about the painting process. I found the information about preparing surfaces, thumbnails, underpainting, value, color, and atmospheric perspective, to be interesting, as well as some information about how to deal with common problems. What frustrated me about this book was that I found it to be overly specific about some things and overly general about others, with relatively little real useful information, which had to be searched for by reading the rest. For example, the author tells you what size he breaks his pastel sticks into and how he grips a piece of pastel in his fingers--something which is quite personal and not likely to be of use to anybody who is not a total beginner. But about actual pastel strokes he is very general, showing you only that you can swipe, hatch, or crosshatch. These strokes are not demonstrated in any kind of painting--not even a simple one. They are simply shown in blocks of color out of any context. He speaks of the overall importance of edges to giving your work a natural, three-dimensional quality, but he doesn't really talk about when, why, or how to blend edges. He goes into significant detail on how to make greens look natural in a landscape painting--something quite specific and relatively advanced. Then he talks about value and color harmony in general terms (which is nonetheless interesting and I found useful). But he never quite seems to find that sweet spot of actual techniques and approaches. It's not a book for beginners, though there are parts of it that seems aimed at the total neophyte (how to hold your pastel). For an intermediate level pastel enthusiast there is some interesting information, but sections that deal with things like your first gallery show aren't helpful. But for an artist who is ready to think about art shows, most of the material in here is probably hopelessly basic and general. As to the writing style, I found it a bit wordy in most places, which is all the more frustrating when you find yourself searching for the next bit of useful information. For me the DVD wouldn't play--at least not in my PC.Overall, there was enough of value in this book to make it worth reading, but the experience of reading it was frustrating.

This is an excellent book for artists who have worked with pastels. It covers a wide range of topics, from basic techniques, to framing for galleries. It is a book to dip into when you need to try something new, need inspiration, or just wonder how to achieve a goal. Richard is a great educator and he does a great job of sharing his wealth of knowledge in a readable way.I've loved reading the book and expect to be dipping back into it on a regular basis.

If you want to really learn about pastel this book is a must !!! Not only for beginners but for everyone who wants to go to another level with their paintings! It is well thought out and written ! Richard McKinley is amazing.
