FABULOUS book. I bought this after reading The Pumpkin Plan and Profit First. Mike's combination of humor and sage wisdom has made him one of my favorite business thinkers. I read a LOT of self improvement stuff and books on entrepreneurship and I think this one (along with his other books) brings the most practical and actionable advice to business owners. His sense of humor is wicked and had me elbowing hubby to to "listen to this!" (The hysterical bathroom scene described in the first section is reason enough to slap down your hard earned money for the book.)We've been limping along with our business for years and for the first time, I finally thing we can actually pull this think off and build a BUSINESS - not a *job* for ourselves.I highly, highly recommend his book!

When I first learned of author Mike Michalowicz, it was by way of referral to "The Toilet Paper Entrepreneur" blog -- one of those "Top 10" lists to follow for small businesses. Boy, was I ever glad I did. Immediately I began picking up tidbits as I had recently spun off from another company to start my own. I was learning what it meant to be scrappy, or as the book suggest, left with just three sheets on the roll.One of my favorite things with any business is the culture, and more importantly how that culture shines through as a personality to their customers and clients. Zappos is a great example of this, so much so that they dedicate a whole section of their website to it. The author takes this a step further and pushes you to outline what he calls "Immutable Laws (A Filter for Everything)." One of my favorites, which you'll see carried throughout all three of Michalowicz's book, is "Blood Money" (page 43).One important thing that the author points out: This book is not a magic bullet. It's full of great ideas to reduce costs, run lean, and break out in glory. But he is quick to point out that your success is entirely contingent upon you -- Your beliefs, your focus, your actions, and how they intertwine.Learning to build your business on just three (short) documents is great. Especially when you are starting out and know that flexibility could be your key to success. Most business plans are written with long term goals in mind, but done in a very lengthy way. Here, Michalowicz walks you through creating a Prosperity Plan, Quarterly Plan, and Daily Metrics. You have a compass and you have the ability to see if your business is healthy or not right from the start.FINAL THOUGHTS: When I started following Michalowicz's blog, it was just as he was preparing to launch his follow-up book, The Pumpkin Plan: A Simple Strategy to Grow a Remarkable Business in Any Field. While I was entertained by the blog, I actually didn't pick up and read Toilet Paper Entrepreneur until AFTER I read The Pumpkin Plan. I wouldn't say it's a mistake, but it does depend on where you are in your business. If you are past year one, it's still a great read, but I'd suggest immediately continuing the journey with a good read of The Pumpkin Plan.P.S. One more thing... The audiobook version has been recently re-recorded and is quite reasonably priced. If you don't like reading, but want to get this information, grab it now! The best part is that you'll get all of Mike's humor and side thoughts as part of the audio.P.S.S. Sorry, but I must mention (like others) that the language can be a bit crude at times. But we're all adults, and frankly when you're used to the stuffiness of other business books, it can be a welcomed tone and keep you entertained in the learning process.

I was significantly disappointed to learn a book promoted as true was far from factual. As I was reading it I thought "this is to good to be true" and, alas, it apparently was. It is a great story but I can't help but feel that had the author might better have promoted it as a work of fiction based on some degree of truth. Had he done so, he would have left fewer readers disappointed and would have earned, perhaps, more respect for his significant ability to tell a compelling story. Bram buries his wife only to find the evil Mr. North standing over him in a remote village in the middle of nowhere? Please.

I just finished this book, and throughout, was struck by the unbelievability of the close calls that Modoc saved them from, the 2 perfect little Harelequin-style romances, the fictionally-bad bad guys, the errors in basic Indian geography and Indian culture, the repeated references to sweating elephants (they don't sweat). There were many holes in the storytelling that tell of thinly crafted social situations and heavy melodrama. It was strange that the author discounted the bond that Modoc would have had with his mother. That was never mentioned, it would have been an important factor, but the author wanted to present that Bram was the only being that Modoc could love (this is a bit codependent). There is no way an English speaking white boy traveling on an elephant was going to find his way to Burma by wandering east and asking directions! And why would Bram write Gertie a letter saying goodbye after not writing her once before, and after knowing Sian for just a few days?I did love the relationship between Bram and Modoc, but beings do have to part sometimes, and this author was not going to allow these two to part. I definitely cried several times... I loved the spiritual sections of connecting us to nature and God through animal relationships... though, again, he didn't represent Hindu philosophy really. I appreciated the rich story telling of adventures at sea and in the jungles of India, it is great fun like Treasure Island is fun.I went to the internet to learn more about Bram Gunterstein and his elephant. I was so disappointed to realize that this man never existed. There were no other accounts of his life or any photos... just this book and some helpful reviews.I rated this 3 stars because I adored reading about the behavior of the elephant, her way of comforting, greeting, knowing, communicating... being joyful, mischievous and playful.It felt like the author wanted to justify circus-performing animals using Modoc to prove that elephants love performing and if they retire, that is like death, they will feel useless. That, I do not believe at all! That is anthropomorphising and projecting codependent tendencies of man onto animals that are very happy just being and living in a natural state.ueThis was an enticing read that I didn't want to put down, and I always love reading things that show how special elephants really are, but felt frustrated by the holes, the immature simple dialogue, and the obvious fictional aspect of the stories that had me rushing through the book to get it done.

I think anyone who reads this book will both fall in love (with the story and elephants in general) and feel disappointed after when they find out that it's probably not even loosely tied in to a real tale. Like so many other people I started googling the unfindable "facts" in the story -- and also dug a little deeper into elephant-based stories as well. I have always felt sorry for the captured elephants who eventually go beserk in some circus ring or village square, while assuming their breakdown has come from human cruelty around them. Naturalists remind us of the reality of wild elephants, pointing out how warm and fuzzy their community life is with one another and toward their young -- but making it clear that if the gaping tourists in the Land Rover get too close the dinosaur-sized creature will knock over a vehicle with ease and step on some human body parts as well. Without hesitation. I imagine with the elephants intelligence and family loyalty there are as many personalities and attitudes as there are situations elephants have found themselves in, whether it be a zoo, a circus, a form of daily transportation or a sanctuary. In the end I think the truth of this book is that a Modoc is possible. Haven't we all heard of or read touching stories about close unique relationships between an elephant and a person? Coming to that conclusion made me feel better about the question of whether or not this story of a boy named Bram and his soulmate Modoc really existed. While I read the book they felt real and, fictional or no, they awakened me to a deeper appreciation of elephants.

(Sorry readers, it has come to my attention that this is NOT a true story. It is fiction. I did love reading it but only because I thought it was true. I never would have bought it knowing it was fiction.)If you love animals especially elephants, you must read this book. Not always happy, but honest and real. Amazing story of the love and magical bond between a boy and his elephant. Modoc was exceptional, a very special elephant and you the reader will not want to put the book down.

I'm sorry to say that I am very disappointed with this book. I've read other stories by Ralph Helfer and was hoping this would be as heart warming, but it's honestly more cringey than anything else. It is a fun story at times and can make for an enjoyable read... BUT there is absolutely no way this is a true story. I think Helfer based some aspects of the story on true events, but took a lot of creative liberty with ~70% of the book. It's written like a screenplay and I suspect Helfer was hoping it would become a movie someday, and maybe it could work as a movie, but that doesn't make for great reading. A lot of the writing is just cheesey and literally had me rolling my eyes at times. As a zoologist who actually works with large, exotic and wild animals for a living, I can't take any of this story seriously.

I loved this book! It made me laugh and cry with such a heartwarming story. If you love elephants I would definitely suggest this book, it perfectly depicts their compassionate, loving, loyal nature.I know some people are saying they do not like it because it is not true or Helfer over exaggerates everything, but that is apart of storytelling. Helfer discloses that this is the retelling of a story he heard from Bram, Modoc's owner. Whether you choose to believe it or not, it is a marvelous and captivating story.

There are dozens of fencing books on the market today, and they all cover various aspects of history, French vs. Italian style, basics, exercises, etc. Sowerby's book is by far the best out there on the "chess" aspects of fencing-- both strategy and tactics. Andrew takes a very balanced tone, giving just enough on history, warm ups, beginning skills, footwork, etc., then launching into the most advanced topics-- parries and ripostes from every position for both left and right, deception, counter/counter moves, compounds, feints, and MUCH more.There are quick chapters on epee and sabre, but the main concentration is on foil, although many of the techniques apply to all three when you remove right of way and added target considerations-- much of the footwork, strategy and tactics apply. This is a RECENT book, with a LOT about modern competition, the move toward force and strength in the olympics vs. finesse, and the tactics the most accomplished winners use.I recommend this both for beginners and advanced fighters, and I also use this book in my combat fencing classes for real blade situations. There are tips here (like keeping the line of sight where the attacker can't see it and not exposing the subclavian with too narrow a trunk presentation) that are amazing for any type of knife or sword training, including katana, Phillipine, Samurai, etc. Advanced fighters will LOVE the detail of the tactics. I've seen many books call fencing "physical chess" but this is the only one that really gets into that kind of move-countermove detail, and I've read them all!The only downside is that it's written by and for a UK audience, so you'll have to get over some of the "British" system, organization and other references, but the tactics are so well done-- better than any other book on the market-- that this annoyance is worth it if you're coming from a different (eg US) viewpoint. You might also have to buy this FROM the UK depending on vendor at the time you search Amazon, but both vendors we've tried here on Amazon delivered to the US in just days! This also is available for Prime from time to time, but with a couple week wait.Be aware of, but don't be put off by the "96" pages spec on Amazon-- the type is VERY TINY, with numerous pictures and illustrations, and a generous trim size/ full color. It literally has MUCH more on advanced strategy and tactics than the 300 pagers that spend all kinds of space on history and basics!I'm a knife and sword combat instructor at blade combat dot com and have nothing to do with Amazon, the author, or the publishers, and all our reviews are strictly for the benefit of Amazon shoppers. Been in business over 8 years. Learned a few new deductions that will save a lot of money as well as a much better understanding of tax deductions overall. This book should be part of a 'mandatory starter package' for any new business owner. It obviously isn't and never will be because it would not benefit the IRS but sure would have been nice to know some of this stuff years ago!

This was a very comprehensive book. I certainly know and understand more about the topic. However, a lot of repetitive information made the book boring and sometimes uninteresting...then again, it's a book about taxes.

I would buy this book every year it comes out.
