I loved this book about the immigration of Irving Berlin and other Jewish immigrants. I myself am a second-generation American who was born to an Italian who hated racism above all things. By racism, I mean dislike for any group of people unlike oneself. My grandparents entered this country through Ellis Island. I am proud to be an American because this country gave my family a chance to live and prosper in an atmosphere of freedom. Although the book is relatively short, it is well written and clearly illustrates the magnanimous way that most Americans throughout our history have treated the immigrant. I am not naive. I know the struggles endured by the immigrants because of the white Anglo-Saxon Protestants who lived here before the great migration of people from other lands. But they are not representative of America. It is we who live and work in harmony with persons from all nations who represent the true spirit of America.
Interesting weaving of the difficult immigration issue with the life of Irving Berlin. Worth reading especially for anyone whose relatives came thru Ellis Island. I am glad I was born in the USA!!!
More of a view of one families life through the early part of the century. It does support the only in America concept though. Escaping tyranny for a better life here.
A good survey of immigration into the US and particularly Ellis Island. Most Americans can see a shadowy past in their own families here.
A great read about the American spirit forged out of the millions of immigrants that came to the United States for a better opportunity. Easy to read and a great historical perspective of those that passed through Ellis Island, most notably Irving Berlin.
An excellent history lesson of immigrants from Europe. And a wonderful tribute to Irving Berlin. Thank you, Mr. Jackson .
Even though this book covered a couple hundred years it is worth spending time immersed in this historical period of time. Readers interested in family history and genealogy would appreciate this author.
Very interesting historical account of immigrants coming to America. Special attention paid the Irving Berlin and his family.
