This is a seriously beautiful book. As a huge book lover, just looking at it and paging through it makes me happy. As you can see from the pictures, it comes with gold dipped pages and a red ribbon book marker. My boyfriend commented that it looks just like a Bible.I attached some photos of the Contents, just in case anyone was wondering what specific stories are included (although I do believe it's supposed to be a complete set--but I don't know Grimm's stories well enough to confirm that).Hope my pics have helped! :)

I don't know if this is unique to the Kindle version, but this edition is truly a travesty.I bought it a while ago and have been reading the stories whenever I get some free time. From the start I had the feeling that these stories were a little "off". The brothers Grimm are known to be somewhat somber, I get that, but they also portray humor and subtle nuances in their writing. However, this English version reads as if it had been stripped of any wit before publication.A few days ago, I finally discovered the main problem: the translation is just awful. I really didn't want to believe it, I truly wanted to think this book was a faithful representation of the original stories, and it was just a case of me not "getting it". Then I read the story titled "Clever Hans" and it was such a bizarre experience, that I had to look up how come it ended the way it did. That's when I discovered this gem, which is illustrative of the problem that affects the whole book. If you go to Wikipedia and read the plot of "Clever Hans", you learn the premise of the tale, how it is supposed to be humorous and the ending should read something like:"And that's how Hans lost his bride."However, after reading this book's version of the tale, it read like a bad story, not humorous at all, and it ended with the line:"Then Grethel became angry, tore herself loose and ran away, and became the bride of Hans."Clearly, the translation went as far as to completely change the meaning of the punchline of the story. Now I know I have been reading a bad imitation of the Grimm brothers work all this time. Nothing left to do but to look for a better rendition of their work.

That's Taschen: its books are worth every (*pretty*) penny.I cannot speak to this translation versus other English ones (note: the cover is not in German as Amazon displays), but there is a Translator's Note at the end. An index, too. And at the beginning, an introduction to Grimms', for the uninitiated.Beautifully presented and told, it is an anthology for all ages to cherish.

It's a nice enough book, but I'm afraid I don't like the translation. The most glaring example is that, in the story of Rapunzel, all that is said to let Rapunzel's hair down is "Rapunzel, Rapunzel, let down your hair." I remember as a child reading a second line "that I may climb the golden stair." I have confirmed on Google search that my memory is correct, which means this translation is deficient. I felt like other stories were very dry, sterile. I think this must be because all the stories have less than full translations.I would appreciate it if someone could recommend another version with better translations of the stories. Waiting and ready to order another.

The book came on time & looks exactly as shown. It has many tales I did t realize existed. I bought this to use while writing a report on the gruesome truth behind the tales we love. These are NOT books for children. As an adult I appreciate the original stories. However, there are still fairly watered down from the true original tales. As I was using this in my works cited I found I had to search for more sources seeing how this book wasn’t true originals.

Great book for all the fans of classic fairy tales, me included. The book is of course in Old English grammar, which is grand. And it is printed in the U.K. so you'll see a lot of 'single quotations' rather than "double quotations".The only con is the stories aren't the "original" version per se. The Frog Prince for example turned human again by sleeping in the princess's pillow, but the original version, the prince turns human again after the princess violently throws him against the wall. But I guess it's for the kids to read more so than adults. Still worth getting. I'm still pleased.

Norm is as good at writing as OJ is at murdering wives, but neither gets credit for it. Sometimes life is unfair.

It might be most helpful to start with what this book is not -- it is most certainly not the typical comedian memoir that is common right now. You won't be getting a chronology of Norm's life written humorously. You won't get any insight into his past or his personality, aside from tangentially. You won't even get many true stories.This book is aimed squarely at those who are fans of Norm's slightly odd brand of comedy; his mixing of fact of fiction, the shaggy-dog quality of many of his jokes and stories, his brilliant and hilarious use of language, and his deadpan refusal to acknowledge when he is joking. Some of it almost relies on outside knowledge -- for instance, his descriptions of Adam Eget probably just come across as confusing and mean if the reader is not familiar with their relationship from Norm's video podcast. Maybe some of that is a bit too "inside baseball", but for me as a huge fan of Norm, it made almost every aspect of this book uproarious.I believe I can honestly say I laughed more and harder while reading this book than any book I have ever read (including many, many other comedians' books). Without giving too much away, Chapter 5 in particular made me set the book down from laughing so hard. But at the same time, I can easily see others reading it and barely cracking a smile. It is definitely aimed at a very specific sense of humor, but for those of us who share that, it lands beautifully.

Very funny! I was on a flight, sitting between two strangers. The flight was the three of us minding our own business, and trying not to make physical contact in the tight confines of a commercial jet. The quiet scene interrupted repeatedly by what must have appeared to my seat mates as Tourette's-like bursts of cackling by me. I really enjoyed the book. And my seat mates listed even further away from me, because of my random outbursts, so my middle seat on the plane ended up being quite roomy! Well done Norm!

Filled with actual half truths wrapped in Norm's bumbling yet brilliant speaking style. While he wears the mask of a fool, Macdonald will surprise you with references to classic literary works, right before dropping the equivalent of a fart joke. There is a mix of humility and feigned (?) pride throughout. Laugh out loud funny, while giving you confirmation that Norm is exactly the guy you think you always knew...and then some. Poor Adam Eget has found fame, too, by becoming the lackey's lackey. One day I expect to read a murder/suicide headline with both their names attached to the content. Norm, keep looking over your shoulder.

Norm MacDonald has to be one of the most unappreciated comics in modern times. He is so glib, but hilarious. History will prove him to be the Lenny Bruce of our time. He has perfect comic timing...and that can't be taught! Unfortunately for Norm, he is so far ahead of his time that no one can figure out how to place him or how to best utilize his type of comedy. This has to be one of the funniest and most entertaining memoirs I have ever read...even if it is mostly true only in his mind.

It helps if you listen to the audiobook; with Norm himself reading it, it's easier to tell which parts are wholly ironic or comedic, and which parts may have a little more truth to them. But one thing I can say, is that it's a fantastically entertaining book. I've often heard it said that Norm is likely the most well read of all of the stand up comedians, especially in Russian literature, and it shows here. Norm's great deception - his comedic schtick - may be that he's sort of a dopey, backwards bumpkin, but in truth, he's anything but. Norm is a very intelligent person, and I've found this book to be surprisingly well-written and entertaining.

Well, leave it to Norm Macdonald to have written the most unusual celeb memoir I have ever read. He does however give you fair warning that not everything in the book is true. Instead it's this weird mix of truth, things that are ridiculously false, and stuff that makes you wonder, is he pulling my leg or is this legit?I never listen to audiobooks, but this time I wish I had because his humor doesn't translate as well in written form. That's not to say the book isn't funny as there were multiple times while reading this in public at the airport I had to bite my lip from laughing out loud. I just think hearing him read his book would enhance the whole experience because part of why he is so funny is his way of delivering a joke.I thought the book got off to a rather slow start. I was a good 1/4 of the way into it before it started to get pretty entertaining. I loved him including some of his old Weekend Update jokes as they are still as funny now as they were at the time.I do have mixed feelings about this book. I probably would have enjoyed it more if it was in the style of a typical celeb memoir. But Norm is anything but typical so I guess I do appreciate the fact he went in a completely opposite direction. I recommend giving this one a chance if you are a fan of his, but get the audiobook instead of reading it in written form.

I'll admit to a certain amount of bias as I've been a Norm fan since about the early 90's (I'll never forget the first time I heard his now infamous Answering Machine bit on the Caroline 's Comedy Hour...)I feel this book captures what to me is so appealing about Norm - clever, thoughtful satire which deftly maneuvers from the highbrow to the lowbrow (but mostly lowbrow thankgod - O mean let's face it that's Norm's bread and butter!)For those readers hoping for a moretraditional, garden-variety read of the author's life and career, you may find yourself feeling a bit letdown. Yet I believe that an attentive reader will come to conclude that this "memoir" does indeed contain a great deal of truth - just perhaps not the Objective truth of the author's life (Hence the title of this book).(NOTE: some advice for those not overly familiar with Norm, search the web for his WTF podcast appearance and his Conan/Letterman spots - it will greatly enhance your experience of this work).

I love this book. With so much being presented in the media about rights and laws and acts of Congress, I wanted to know exactly what the Constitution said. I keep it by my chair and when something comes up that I don't remember or understand I look it up.

I'm learning a lot about what I thought I knew. It's worth it.

I picked up this book as a crash course for a US Government class. 80% of what I needed to know I found in this book in plain English. I was very pleased with the price as well as the purchase overall.

The author covers every article and amendment, and he makes every attempt at explaining concepts like judicial review and enumerated powers in layman's terms. While the book contains sections marked "In My Opinion," which the author gives the reader permission to skip, the reader finds the author's take on various Supreme Court decisions throughout the text. In fact, the book is as much an argument for strict constructionism as it is a comprehensive review of the Constitution. (Justice Antonin Scalia is quoted many times throughout this book. And Ted Cruz wrote the foreward.) The author too often brushes off Living Constitution arguments, calling various 5-4 conservative court decisions "imminently sensible," as though anyone would have reached the same decision, even though four justices took the other side.As other reviewers have noted, the structure of the book is not as straightforward as one might expect. The author is constantly referring the reader to other sections of the book, and some topics and cases are mentioned several times. At first, I found this frustrating, and I still wonder if another structure might have been more effective. However, the author wants to show how different parts of the Constitution work in tandem to produce the government we've got. For instance, he explains the philosophy of incorporation very well(even though he clearly hates it), but explaining it involves taking amendments out of order and analyzing them side by side. So while he takes the amendments in order, in his discussion of each amendment he includes relevant portions of other amendments. His handling of the 5th and 14th amendments is a good example of this: the discussion of each amendment is in a different chapter, but since each one has a Due Process clause, he compares the amendments to better explain what due process is all about. Same thing with amendments 10 and 14.This is my first "for Dummies" book, so I can't compare it to other books in the series. It seems to me that this book might be too technical for someone who wants a quick, no-frills summary of the Constitution. (In addition to the "In My Opinion" sections, there are also sections called "technical stuff," where the author really gets into the weeds on some heavy issues. He says the reader can skip these sections, as well, but even so, I think that the book isn't really for "dummies" at all.) And I find the idea of packaging an unabashedly right-wing analysis of the constitution as an unbiased intro for laymen kind of creepy (but really smart). Still, I'm glad I read this book. I learned a lot from it. If you want an in-depth but fairly plainspoken introduction to the Constitution and don't mind having to filter out the author's conservative throwaway lines, you'll enjoy the book. And to the author's credit, I'm a dyed-in-the wool lefty, and his arguments on certain points really made me think.

Absolute genius !! A handbook for every citizen of the US, everything we should know about our rights that we will never be taught in school.....

It started out o.k. then the book jumped all over the place. I would have liked to learn the amendments in order and not learn so much about Supreme Court Justices.
