Faith Volume 1: Hollywood and Vine, by Jody Houser

From School Library Journal

Gr 7 Up—Faith Hebert, a psiotic (or person with superpowers) known as Zephyr, has relocated to Los Angeles in search of a fresh start. Once part of a group of psiotic humans (Harbinger Renegades), she now works as an unassuming entertainment blogger, Summer, eager to make her mark (as a journalist and superhero) yet conflicted about attracting attention. When her telekinetic powers (and the hacking ability of a friend) unearth other inactive psiotic beings who have mysteriously disappeared, Faith investigates. This is a modern twist on the classic superhero tale. Faith doesn't have the typical superheroine body type, dismantling stereotypes about what it means to be superpowered. While the plot doesn't deviate too far from the average superhero story, Faith is a self-aware protagonist, commenting on the common superhero tropes, and this selection is sure to spark conversations about body image and women in comics. VERDICT Recommended for all graphic novel fans and those interested in body positive characters.—Tamela Chambers, Chicago Public Schools, IL

NERDIST - "This is a superhero done right"THE ATLANTIC - "Faith's return to the comic-book landscape represents twin achievements for the medium: an increasing willingness to tell stories featuring heroic women, and a tendency to celebrate the ways in which those women to deviate from (or challenge) gender norms."SCHOOL LIBRARY JOURNAL -- Gr 7 Up-Faith Hebert, a psiotic (or person with superpowers) known as Zephyr, has relocated to Los Angeles in search of a fresh start. Once part of a group of psiotic humans (Harbinger Renegades), she now works as an unassuming entertainment blogger, Summer, eager to make her mark (as a journalist and superhero) yet conflicted about attracting attention. While the plot doesn't deviate too far from the average superhero story, Faith is a self-aware protagonist, commenting on the common superhero tropes, and this selection is sure to spark conversations about body image and women in comics. VERDICT Recommended for all graphic novel fans and those interested in body positive characters.-Tamela Chambers, Chicago Public Schools, IL KIRKUS - "Fat and fierce superhero Zephyr-aka Faith Herbert-leaves the Harbinger Resistance to fly solo. On her own in LA and with her secret identity blown in a previous adventure, blonde, white Faith goes Clark Kent with a pair of glasses, a red wig, and a new name-Summer Smith-to complement her role as a mild-mannered content writer for online outlet Zipline. She works hard to get over ex-boyfriend and rising reality TV star Torque and continues to fight crime. Investigating the disappearance of a young black teen, a possible psiot like her, soon leads her to the evil Vine, who are experimenting on psiots as part of a plot to (of course) take over the Earth. Faith is an enormously likable character, an unapologetic geek and fangirl. Dialogue and internal monologues are both strong in banter ("I can do this," she thinks to herself as she prepares to write a puff piece on Torque. "I'm a freakin' superhero") and reflective of an unflinching moral code. Portela's and Sauvage's classic superhero stylings accommodate Faith's size with ease and respect. Readers unfamiliar with previous Harbinger storylines will flounder a bit as they catch up, but the willingness to suspend disbelief and go with the superhero flow will take them far. This volume compiles the first four issues of her solo comic. You go, girl. (Graphic fantasy. 12 & up)" NPR -- Houser has accomplished something deceptively simple: she's made Faith a fun character to spend time with. Faith is lighthearted but virtuous, with a cheesy sense of humor, compassion and smarts. The book's ultimate success, though, is due to its visuals: the phenomenal subversive power of a fat female body in motion. Faith's size makes her larger than life in a way few other female superheroes are. Standing next to a male co-worker she's monumental, her calf the width of his hips, each of her feet the size of his head. When she stops bullets with her mind, there's no question where her power is seated. And when she's aloft and spiraling - a body that's both fat and weightless, gliding and twisting in the heavens - it's surely more exhilarating than any other superhero's flight has ever been. Exuberant, bodacious and just plain awesome, Faith owns the sky.

I love the Faith comics by Valiant! She is a great character that you will fall in love with. She is a geeky girl who is into firefly and other popular geeky stuff. She is also the first plus sized female super hero character. I honestly was worried that she would be the butt of every fat joke and that the comics would focus more on her weight than anything. However, they instead made a lovable character who is a cool super heroine who just happens to be fluffy. I applaud the writers for this. I'm also just glad that a different body type is being represented in comics. If you haven't read the Faith comics yet then check this out. You'll get a kick out of all of the geek culture references she makes and really root for her! She makes her first appearance in the Harbinger comics by Valiant. If you want to get her back story and enjoy a really great additional comic series, check that one out too.

“Faith: Hollywood and Vine” was a strong outing from writer Jody Houser and an art team led by Francis Portela and Marguerite Sauvage. The comic garnered some media attention, mostly over the plus-sized superheroine as the lead character, but there is a far more to the story than just that. Faith--better known to Valiant fans as Zephyr from her time in the “Harbinger” comics--is a very strong and relatable lead character. She’s upbeat, positive, comfortable with herself and Houser does a fine job in guiding her through some exciting adventures and some fun scenes when the mask (or wig in this case) is off. Houser is sharp enough to offer a nice jumping on point so readers with little or no background on Valiant comics can enjoy this collected miniseries. Faith offers a nice change of pace from the legions of stories featuring dark, brooding anti-heroes. Highly recommended.

My expectations were a bit too high perhaps or it may be that I've become accustomed to manga but I was underwhelmed. I love the cover art but I felt like the frame by frame story was drawn in a clunky unflattering way. The story line was ok. This was not the slick bad ass fat chick superhero I was looking for. As an artist/ fat chick I was fired up anew to keep working on my own ideas.

I bought this for my sister and she loved it. "It's interesting. It's original. Clever, it's definitely clever, like clever lines. A superhero, yet I feel like I could identify with her from the art and writing, basically the way they are showing the character." She's never read a comic or graphic novel before and says "this one makes a fan out of me."

This was a lot of fun to read. Faith is awesome and has a great sense of happy exuberance about her. She's so much more than just a superhero. I was not too familiar with Jody Houser's work but she wrote an incredible comic about a great female character that anyone can enjoy. The art is tops, too. Francis Portella and Marguerite Sauvage are the art team and created a really cool, visual book. Highly recommended.

I'm a middle-school English teacher with a one of graphic novels and comics. Some of my students love this book and relate to a character that breaks the muscle-clad white male archetype. Picked up for this specific reason and it serves it's purpose. Read it myself and love how it addresses common tropes and laughs at them with a fun and engaging story, even if the narrative isn't overly complicated or deep.

Judy Houser does strong work bringing a wholesome hero that is not anchronistic. The plus-sized superhero element is refreshing and does a lot with Zephyr from Harbinger but the upbeat, positive character is exciting from an Imprint otherwise full of brooding anti-heroes.

Got lost with what seems to be ads between "chapters" in the story. For me, it was hard to follow as to what was part of the story (how does that relate...?).

On Bicycles: A 200-Year History of Cycling in New York City, by Evan Friss

Review

In On Bicycles, Evan Friss fills in the missing chapters that bicycles hold in New York City’s near-miraculous transportation history and shows how the city’s streets are finally catching up with them. (Janette Sadik-Khan, Bloomberg Associates, former NYC transportation commissioner)This social history of the transformation of New York’s relationship to cycling is elegantly researched, gracefully written, and nearly as delightful as the bicycle itself. (Kim Phillips-Fein, author of Fear City: New York's Fiscal Crisis and the Rise of Austerity Politics)Two hundred years ago, the first riding machines that resembled what would become bicycles began pouring into Manhattan, and New York City would never be the same again. On Bicycles is brilliantly researched, noting the battles against local government, sexism, the automobile, and the railways, as the bicycle fought its way to become more popular today than ever before. Vive le vélo! (Phil Liggett MBE, "The Voice of Cycling")Witty and wise, engaged and engaging, surprising, fun and fabulous―I’m running out of adjectives to describe Evan Friss’s wondrous new book. Move over Amsterdam: New York City is a bicycling city too, though with fits and starts, grunts and guffaws, and more than a handful of bike haters (some in high places). A great way to learn about the history of the city that never sleeps―and has never stopped arguing about its bicycles and bicyclists. (David Nasaw, Arthur M. Schlesinger, Jr. Professor of History, CUNY Graduate Center)A fresh and personalized perspective on what the bicycle has meant to New Yorkers over the years. (David Herlihy, author of Bicycle: The History)A superb history of New York’s cycling cultures over the last two centuries, On Bicycles surveys the evolution of the bicycle in the city from urban menace and medium of feminist liberation to weekend joyride and mainstay of the transportation network. Written with verve and precision, it reads like a long glide down Broadway with the wind at your back, catching green light after green light. (Samuel Zipp, author of Manhattan Projects: The Rise and Fall of Urban Renewal in Cold War New York)An essential contribution to multiple fields―New York history, transportation history, urban history, and planning history―this compelling and fascinating story takes you along with ease, artfully offering a barrage of digestible information, including previously unknown morsels. Even the most well-read New Yorkers, cyclists, and urban historians will find something new here. (Owen Gutfreund, Hunter College)A thoughtful, entertaining look at an essential form of transportation in New York City. (Publishers Weekly)

This is more a character revelation, rather than story telling. We know her story. In this book, reading between the lines, I understood Nadia's character - reserved, serious, committed, cautious. She tells her story in a politically correct way, careful not to accuse or speak ill of anyone, avoiding talking too much about the dark periods of her life. What's missing to me is her opinion on her team mates and other athletes. She only talks briefly of Ludimilla Turisheva whom she looked up to with admiration and Teodora Ungureanu, her close friend. What I really liked is her attitude towards life, her leadership point of view and her savvy advice that applies to different situations, not only gymnastics. Overall a good book. Thank you Nadia, my childhood friend.

Growing up as a gymnast, with Nadia as my idol, I was very interested and excited when coming across this book. Although the first half of the book, Nadia's gymnastics career and accomplishments, was not new news for me, I became deeply engaged in the latter part of the book when Nadia spoke of life in Romania after gymnastics, defection, the United States, Canada etc. Being born into a Ukrainian culture and heritage here in the US, I was familiar with the communistic regime as Ukraine was also a communist state within the USSR, the nation and its people suffering greatly within this regime. Thus I was able to empathize and better appreciate Nadia's situation. I was frustrated at times throughout the book because I would have liked to hear more detail or the "full story" in various situations that Nadia brings up. At times I felt like I was reading "cliff notes" to Nadia's story, each chapter leaving me with more questions than the fulfillment of complete understanding. Nadia did mention in the beginning of her story that there would be details that she would leave out due to respect and confidentiality but I felt like there was a lot left out. For example, I was very eager to hear about how she re connected with Marta and Bela after all those years. Marta and Bela were is essence part of her family for the majority of her young life and she consistently mentioned them in the first half of the book yet after her defection to the US she barely mentions them at all. Why did she not reach out to them? What was the real story behind Constantin? What was her relationship with her father like? Perhaps all of these details would have made the book much too long or perhaps Nadia simply chooses not to share them. In all I appreciated learning more about Nadia but feel unfulfilled in getting the "full story."

Loved the book. It was an invaluable look at the hard work, close relationships, and troubled times in her native Romania that Nadia lived through. I was so engrossed that I finished the book in one sitting. She had me spellbound explaining what she went through when she escaped from Romania and the heartbreak of leaving her family behind. She has lived quite a life, and all ends well with her marriage to Bart Conner.

The book is pretty good but some of the content is not meant for a "young gymnast" due to some mature content. Luckily, I was reading the book to my eight year old and could easily skip over those parts and not change too much of what Nadia was trying to convey.

This is a book, that, at least to me, gave me a true insight about Nadia. The part about the recurring dream she has had for years gives so much information about her, more than statistics or stories about her triumphs. This is a brave and true book. It helps to know and understand how and why she became one of the greatest athletes of all times. Inspiring. A must book for all fathers who wonder if their children have a chance to make it to profesional levels in their sports. Like Nadie tells us, its something she was born with: her personality, her energy, her drive, it's something that can't be taught or forced, she was born with it.

I ordered this book for my grandson, a high school athlete. His uncle, a high school coach, recommends it to his athletes!

Great insight into the life of Nadia amidst political turmoil. Quite personal and well explained to allow the reader to understand her dreams, aspirations and challenges.

A good Birthday present for an avid reader teen gymnast. Also neat if you are looking for ideas is the Gymnastics Scorebook by Deborah Sevilla if she is in a team and likes to record her scores. Together they made a pretty nice gift set.

This criticism has nothing to do with the author himself. I have the utmost respect for EMS personnel and those in similar professions. I very much enjoy reading books written by paramedics, EMTs, doctors, nurses, and other medical professionals. I wish more of them would write these kinds of books because there are so many incredible stories to be told. That's why I bought this book. Unfortunately, I didn't get a chance to read this author's stories because the book read as if it was written by a 12 year old. (Actually, many 12 year olds probably could have done a better job!) I read the introduction and part of the first chapter, hoping I could ignore the terrible, amateurish writing and just concentrate on the stories but I just got so frustrated that I had to stop.In just a few pages, almost every grammatical and punctuation error you can think of was blatant. I often had to read sentences more than once to understand what the author was trying to say. Reading a book that way gets old very quickly. I understand that not everyone is a writer. You can be the best EMT possible and have lots of interesting stories to tell but not have the skills necessary to write a decent book. That's where an editor comes in, something this book clearly did not have. It's such a shame. I really would have liked to read this book but I just couldn't enjoy it given that it was like reading either something written by a child or an extremely rough first draft. I apologize to the author for the harsh review. It's nothing personal; this book just needs some major editing!

I enjoyed the stories. They gave a real feel for what it was like to work in the ambulance service some years ago. I didn't mind the verbal grammatical errors because it gave the feel of the author speaking directly to an audience while someone took it down verbatim. However the lack of decent editing let it down and made it seem very amateurish.

What a pleasure to read at times I was almost along side the author as he went about his work, times may have changed but the humanitarian approach that was described was wonderful.

Reckonings: Legacies of Nazi Persecution and the Quest for Justice, by Mary Fulbrook

Review

"Perhaps now, generations after the atrocities committed under the Nazi regime, it's time to take measure of what has happened to the perpetrators, the victims, and the few survivors. Fulbrook does just that. The author effectively describes the brutal Germanic efficiency in the industrialized murder of homosexuals, "asocials," and, overwhelmingly, Jews. Throughout her substantial text, Fulbrook movingly vivifies her outstanding research with individual histories... As they read this important contribution to Holocaust studies, especially now in the time of neo-Nazis, readers may wonder, is it all in the past? An astute, significant academic study of how civilization can go horribly wrong." --Kirkus "This book is required reading for anyone wishing to understand not why the Holocaust happened by how it happened, and how the vast majority of the perpetrators got away with it. Fulbrook's research on Nazi crimes on the local level and on family strategies of silence and selective remembering adds a delicacy and sensitivity to a subject so dark as to be almost unbearable to contemplate. This is humane scholarship at the highest level." --Jay Winter, Yale University "Across the world, West Germany is frequently extolled as a model of 'confronting the past'. Fulbrook's contention is that it largely failed during the lifetimes of the victims and their persecutors, and only began to alter the whole culture of discussion over the following two generations. What makes Fulbrook's achievement so extraordinary is her ability to balance the individual voices against the conditioning effects of state power and a social ethos, in which German judges in the 1960s and 70s frequently doubted the reliability of Jewish witnesses, while taking former SS men at their word. This is a magisterial book, the culmination of a lifetime of scholarly endeavor-not just in the sense of the knowledge and framing which Fulbrook has to offer, but also in that deeper and more profound sense of her historical judgment. Essential reading." --Nicholas Stargardt, author of The German War: A Nation under Arms "Fulbrook's remarkable achievement is to weave together the history of mass murder with the woeful story of selective post-war justice, an exploration of the painful legacies of Nazi crimes for survivors and a dissection of individual perpetrators' strategies of avoidance. In the process, she vividly evokes overlooked locations and episodes in the history of the Holocaust and unearths extraordinary personal stories. In highlighting the disjunctures between different dimensions of 'reckoning' in the decades since 1945, she offers a powerfully-argued critique of current commemorative practices and poses challenging questions for the future." --Elizabeth Harvey, University of Nottingham "Evocative and engaging, Britain's foremost scholar of post-1945 German history offers us a pioneering study of memory, identity, and representation, one that moves innovatively beyond stone monuments and pure politics, beyond facile dichotomies of victim and perpetrator." -Andrew I. Port, author of Conflict and Stability in the German Democratic Republic and editor of Central European History "Reckonings is a work of expert scholarship and profound moral energy from of one of Britain's most distinguished historians of Nazi Germany. It is not just another history of the Holocaust or the long shadows it has cast, but a complex alloy of history and memory, experience, testimony and denial, and is shot through with deep compassion as well as unsparing historical judgment." -Jane Caplan, Professor Emeritus of Modern European History, University of Oxford Extraordinary well-researched, filled with heartbreaking, heroic and harrowing life stories, "Reckonings is comprehensive, cogent and compelling. Fulbrook's book is a must-read for anyone interested in the realities - and the legacies - of the Nazi Past." --Glenn C. Altschuler, The Jerusalem Post

Reckonings is a punishing book to read, not just because its length (close to 600 pp. of text, plus scholarly appendices and copious photos) but because of its subject: the myriad ways that people avoided responsibility for Europe’s most heinous crime in modern times, the Jewish Holocaust. It is clear, first, that acceptance of any form of responsibility, much less guilt, by the surviving Germans, Poles, etc., came late –in West Germany a generation or two later, in Poland never. Fulbrook (prof., German history, Univ. College London; A Small Town Near Auschwitz: Ordinary Germans and the Holocaust) deplores what took place in generations following but is cognizant of the complicated way in which state considerations –e.g., how do we get the economy running again when almost every one of our industrial leader has dirty hands?—She understands also the mental recalibration required of the trial judges to determine what should be considered crimes and what should constitute adequate evidence for convictionHer account is thorough and balanced and copiously illustrated with stories of those who did make it out of the camps but whose lives were never the same afterwards. This is a challenging study that offers questions to consider as we continue to deal with this unspeakable blot on mankind’s history.

Again, the five-star rating here signifies not "enjoyment" so much as awe. This book is heavy in many ways; massive in terms of number of pages to the extent that my arthritic elderly hands can't hold it for long, and with the small print I need to find a shelf or a table in adequate light to allow me to read it comfortably. In addition, it is extremely thorough, carefully annotated, and significantly illustrated. Published by Oxford University Press, it is obviously appropriate for use as either a sociology or history text. The book is divided into three major sections titled, respectively: "Chasms: Patterns of Persecution"; "Confrontations: Landscapes of the Law"; and "Connections: Memories and Explorations". Each of these sections is in turn subdivided into six chapters. Perusal of the Table of Contents, therefore, allows the reader to select specific topic areas of interest if a simple read-through is not the objective. As author Mary Fullbrook points out, an in-depth study of this sort is essential as the generation of "witnesses" to the original Nazi activities dies out, but the resurgence of ethnically and religiously-based persecution becomes ever more troubling in the present political situation. This book deserves continued study and evaluation, and will hopefully be used as it is obviously intended to raise the awareness of current and future students of politics, social psychology, and law.

When World War 2 ended, the atrocities of the Nazis and their resident populations were obvious. You would think that it was obvious that someone would have to pay. But countries had varying degrees of accountability. East Germany was better than most at trying and punishing ex-Nazis. West Germany was sporadic, allowing some like scientist Werner von Braun to be forgiven and others punished. They also teach the Holocaust in school and have laws about Holocaust denial. Austria did almost nothing about accountability, clinging to first victimhood and denying the actions of ordinary people. Note that Hitler himself was Austrian. As a result, they ended up with ex-SS officer Kurt Waldheim as both president and secretary general of the UN. Poland has passed a law making it illegal to say that Poland had anything to do with the Holocaust, despite the presence of major concentration camps on its soil. The purpose of this book is to hold both individuals and nations accountable. To this end, the author documents atrocities, arrests, lack of prosecution and generally lays out material that would be of use in prosecuting those who evaded scrutiny or at least information that would affect the memory of departed perpetrators.

This was certainly a slog. It took me a long time to read both because of its complexity and detail and because of its large emotional demands. That said, it is worth the time and trouble. It’s an important book.

Very well written, thought provoking book. A must read to try & understand what & why.

#114,003 Paid in Kindle Store (See Top 100 Paid in Kindle Store)

As the title says it's a book about a failure of humanity, a grim account of the 1994 civil war and genocide in Rwanda written by the head of UNAMIR (UN assistance mission for Rwanda) peacekeepers general Romeo Dellaire. While reading a detailed story of the events in Rwanda can be an eye-opener by itself, Dellaire's book provides a unique viewpoint. Being a highest-ranking UN military official stationed in Rwanda since 1993 he gives a first-hand account of the political events, which involved Rwandan leaders, UN officials and several major countries, showing the utter failure to prevent the war before it errupted or to mitigate the subsequent horrible events.Dellaire's idealism (it was his first mission abroad) adds a constant sense of conscience to the story, making it a personal story and not just a chronicle of events. It's a story of a war and a genocide, of propaganda and hatred, of peacekeeping and postcolonialism, of heroism and resolve, of helplesness, trauma and indeciseveness, of tens of thousands women and children massacred. It's an engaging read, but far from a pleasant one, even if you exclude graphic details of the genocide. This is however the main point of the book, to face unpleasant truths and horrors of what happened in Rwanda 20 years ago and is still hapenning around the world this way or another.

This book starts out reading like a history book. It delves into Dallaire's roots and paints the picture of a man who grew out of a poor family into a marriage to the military. The book unravels into day-to-day accounts of everything that happened in Rawanda. I suspect many people will find this type of storytelling, boring and repedative. It can definately be these things at times but this book was not written to sensationalize what happened, it's written to tell you what happened.Dallaire describes the brutality he sees with an eerie calmness, you can definately understand how one could become desensitized to the carnage given the frequency of it.It's not the easiest of reads, there are many names and factions at play throughout the book and it's easy to forget who is who. The book is we'll worth the read.If you're struggling to finish, READ THROUGH THE END. The conclusion is a searing summary of why the genocide occurred and does not mince words when placing blame. They are some of the best pages I have read in any book. They lay out exactly why we are doomed as a species, to repeat the same atrocities over and over again.

My interest in the Rwandan Genocide was heightened when in 2012 I was sent to Rwanda in a partnership for Africa program with the US Air Force and stayed the Collins (Hotel from the Movie Hotel Rwanda). When I was there I went to the Genocide Museum and Memorial and was both fascinated and appalled that this happened. Since I didn't have much knowledge of the incident, I was in 12th grade when it happened, I decided to read this book as it was highly rated. I'm very glad I did. This was/is an amazing book that goes into substantial detail of how and why this horrific incident happened. As is the case with most nonfiction books there is a bit of history on the author and where they came from, etc. This is kept fairly short in this book and is also relevant to the story and interesting. When Dillaire starts the story of what happened in Rwanda you can tell its not going to end well and he does not hide the bitterness and pain that his 1 yr experience in living hell left him with. Be forewarned this book is very graphic and pulls no punches. The detail in which the actual genocide is detailed and how some of the acts were perpetrated is not for the faint of heart, no pictures are needed and thankfully not included. To be honest there were a few times that some of the details in this book kept me up at night and brought a sense how we "civilized" Nations could have just sat back and 800,000 people be slaughter in 100 days. The detail in this book is not written simply to shock the reader, but rather to inform you (the reader) of the brutality and complete hatred that was so prevalent during this event. This book also does a phenomenal job of also describing the excruciating effects on the UN Peacekeepers and Dillaire that witnessing so much death and destruction had on them. I walked away from reading this book mad that the UN and the "leader" nations of the world didn't give a damn about Rwanda and as is continually demonstrated the African continent. If you decide to buy this book, and I highly recommend that you do, you will understand why I made that last statement. I enjoyed this book immensely and also came away better understanding the sense of abandonment that so many developing countries feel from Western culture and nations, and the continual issues that past colonialism in Africa is still causing today.
