This is a book that you want to have in your genealogy reference library. My suggestion is that if you have U.S. ancestors you need this book not only in Kindle form but hardcopy. The Kindle version so you always have it available on your smartphone and hardcopy just because I love the feel of books (but that's just me). I don't have many U.S. ancestors but the methodology work no matter where your ancestors are from. Don't get me wrong there are references to Canadian records and a good section on Eurpeon Ancestry as well as a chapter on adoption research and DNA.

I just received my book yesterday & was eager to start reading it. The book is very informative, Kentatta D. Berry walks you thru the learning tools to help you on your Journey of discovering your Ancestoral History. The book offers tips, provides apps you can use, provides Archive & Historical Society information, gives address on where to order records, break down the Who, What, Where if finding our roots. This is definitely a book I would recommend anyone get this book to add as a collection on Family Research tips. Job well written & informative.

Extremely useful book especially for new researchersI bought this book on the strength of a couple interviews I listened to as podcasts. I am a fan of the author. I am not a rank beginner, I guess I’d say I was a intermediate and intermediate. A quick review of this book tells me I will find it helpful has a full book through read but also useful in understanding more about researching in local record offices. To date I haven’t done as many research trips to my ancestors locales as I should. I especially appreciate her personal shared thoughts regarding specific records. Her book is full of these. An example is Death Records. She warns readers that a death record is only as good as the informant. If the informant was guessing and making up responses to questions on the fly because they were queried- the likelihood of the information being accurate tanks. But 100 years later it sure looks like gospel when one is reading an ancestors death certificate. A researcher must take into consideration the relationship the informant had to the decedent and the likelihood the informant knew of which s/he spoke. The farther back one researches in USA and UK the higher likelihood that informants will be a male because women had little power and were discounted to a degree. An adult daughter will likely know her father’s mother’s maiden name but it’s less likely that a son in law would know such. No other source I’ve read to date has warned readers to analyze the likelihood record informant’s knew correct answers to form questions. Just looking at Ms Berry’s section on Naturalization affirms I haven’t learned everything I need to know about Naturalizationa yet. She even includes a chapter to help adoptees get started sleuthing their biological parentage. Her entire book is written like a knowledgeable good friend might teach and coach. I very much like this informal but informative style.Ms Berry admitted in one podcast she is not as conversant on international records as she is USA records. This is clear. She names sites genealogists may research records in foreign countries including United Kingdom. She blunders at Scotland. The key online source for Scottish vital records is Scotland’s People not the sites she emphasized. She fails to even mention Scotland’s People. I see this as a serious oversight in this first edition to surely be corrected in future editions. YES, she does say in a text paragraph that the (GRO) General Register Office for Scotland has Scottish Birth, Death and Marriage Records. YES she lists Ancestry, My Heritage and Family Search as online utilities in her reference table. But NO she does not explain that Scotland’s People is the only online access to see FULL IMAGES of GRO Scotland Birth, Death and Marriage Records both before and after civil registration began. (Scotland’s People’s have other records online besides vital records.) NO she does not explain that Ancestry, MyHeritage and Family Search provide INDEXES ONLY of Scottish records NOT actual images of the registered events. Indexes are never Substitutes for actual record images when one can see both. Record images can contain errors surely but Indices are rife with errors, especially if they are created via OCR or off-shore by workers not familiar with the language of the records. Besides Indexes rarely contain all the information available in the actual record. Naming conventions of Ireland and Scotland are so duplicative one needs every bit of context to determine if a found record really pertains to one’s real ancestor and not his brother’s, uncle’s, cousin’s etc. Unless one can hire a good genealogist in Scotland or one has good brains and physical access to the GRO or local record offices in Scotland - one cannot research Scotland’s people to a genealogical proof standard without the Scotland’s People website. With the duplicative naming convention and tendency to intermarry its rough going to arrive at a GPS even with a plethora of images!

I am an avid fan of the Genealogy Roadshow on PBS and was so excited to see that Kenyatta Berry published a book. It's a very helpful resource for someone who is new to genealogy and is just starting to research their family tree. There are also lots of noteworthy tricks and tips for the seasoned genealogist. As the title suggests, the book truly is a toolkit that dives into multiple ways to research and build your family story. I have already found a few new and interesting things about my own family using the methods she suggests.

I ordered this book for my mom and uncle who was visiting for the holiday. They enjoyed going over the easy to follow info and had a lot to discuss after visit.

For those researching their ancestry, this is a well written, easy to comprehend book. A very helpful resource!

Great resource for anyone researching their family.

Excellent book for anyone that is ready to do a comprehensive look into their genealogy. The examples and best practices are well explained for all audiences. This truly is a resource for anyone.
