Very interesting, but very different from the first two books that describe their lovely lives in Spain. The Tweads are worried about money and take jobs teaching on the island of Bahrain to fatten their savings. The jobs and the living conditions are not what they expected, but they manage to make good friends and eventually love their spoiled students. Disappointingly, they don't see any camels until the end and they don't travel much, but Bahrain is an island of sand and not much else. There are some scary times with civil unrest where many of their colleagues leave, but the Tweads stay. This book is enjoyable and it's fun to read about the unusual people they meet and the people they work with every day. As usual, the Tweads do their best to make their lives enjoyable and see things in new and different ways despite being homesick for Spain.I do prefer the first two books about their lives in Catalonia, but this one is interesting in ways different from the earlier books.

I just got through reading this 3rd story in this series. Victoria Twead, the author, and her husband Joe go from living in a small remote Spanish village, to spending a year in Bahrain to be teachers. This book has a totally different feel about it and is more on the serious side due to the fact of taking place in the middle east, and the tense situation that actually took place while they were there. However, with that being said, it is no less enjoyable to read. You are taken on an adventure of culture, language, expectations, friendships and education. Victoria has the gift to write on a truly human level that gets you to really 'know' each character and their individual foibles. You get to really feel like you are right there! By the end of the book, it really made me a bit sad when they had to say their goodbyes to such special friends they whom they had shared a year with in such a foreign and exotic place. The friendships there were very strong because of what they'd all gone through together. It made me think more of on the level of individuals as opposed to generalizing a certain group of people. I have really enjoyed reading her series so far and am now looking forward to her next book in this series. Keep writing Victoria! I absolutely lose myself in your books!

I have read the first two of Victoria Twead's books in the Two Old Fools Books and enjoyed them immensely. This one left me down a bit. It wasn't as entertaining as the others. Granted, they were both in Bahrain as teachers and their schedules occurred when there was trouble brewing in the capital that came about because of the Arab Spring. That wasn't a joyous time for anyone including Vicky and her husband, Joe. The book had it's funny moments and Vicky is quite honest with her struggles at the school and with some of the whacky teachers. Will be looking for the next chapter in this series.

Vicky and her husband Joe retired to live in a small village in Spain and she wrote two funny memoirs about that, the first one titled "Chickens, Mules and Two Old Fools." This book is a big change of scene because to replenish their bank account they took jobs in Bahrain teaching for a year. Bahrain is a very strict Muslim island nation off the coast of Saudi Arabia. It was a rough start for them with intense heat and Ramadan demanding they did not eat or even drink water from sun rise to sun set. Add in the violent Arab Spring protests and government actions, a quirky team of teachers, spoiled students, the King's camels, and letting off steam sessions in an Irish bar, plus some warm friendships formed, and you have the basis of this book. I hope Twead disguised some of the teachers she writes about (the very odd ones) so their feelings aren't hurt if they read this. I enjoyed this book and recommend reading the first book first.

The continuation of their retirement journeys is as funny and fun to read as the first and second books. For me, it is a true page turner -- one surprise after another and their reactions to them. If you are into such books, I highly recommend reading the whole series. I actually started with the two prequels first so I knew their backgrounds before retiring.

Once I started reading Victoria Twead's first book I just could not put it down. Today I finished reading her sixth book "The Young Fool in Dorset" and I cannot wait for Victoria's next book. Her writings are absolutely delightful; perfect reading for our long and depressing winters. Sometimes I could not stop laughing at the vivid descriptions of her experiences. Enjoyed particularly "The Two Fools on a Camel". I was curious to read how would Vicky and Joe cope with the different culture and way of thinking in the Arabs countries. I loved the book and I have to say I LOVED all her books. I feel that I met Vicky and Joe and I think both are very lovely people. Cannot wait for her next book!!

This book was highly recommended by several of my friends. I had previously read and enjoyed the first book in the series. Victoria Twead is one of my favorite authors.I was very interested in reading this book since my son spent four months in Bahrain with the US Navy. I enjoyed the photos in the book. The photos and the details the author shared with readers gave me a fascinating glimpse of life in Bahrain.I enjoyed reading about the author's experiences in the classroom with some very difficult students. As a former educator, I could identify with the challenges Miss Vicky faced as a teacher. I especially enjoyed the examples of her students writing assignments. The students misuse of vocabulary words caused me to laugh many times throughout the book.I highly recommend this very well written book to anyone who wants to learn more about life in Bahrain. I am anxiously awaiting the release of the next book in the Two Old Fools series.
