About the Author
Hanna Karlzon has an art teaching degree from Umeå University, and has run her own business as a freelance designer since 2013. She creates elaborately detailed images using India ink to detail pictures from her own imagination and draws her inspiration from the natural world that surrounds her studio in northern Sweden. [If you have an issue with paper quality in this book, see my update below.]A friend sent me this as a gift from my wishlist, so I was disappointed to learn that it was the dreaded second printing - with paper that is inferior and much thinner and rougher. The paper will not hold up to wet media, and I don't feel that markers could be used either without bleeding through. Unfortunately, I don't think I can return or exchange it because it was a gift. The same thing happened with the copy of Summer Nights that I purchased for myself, which I wound up returning. It seems that Amazon is only shipping second printings of these books at this point. Perhaps I will attempt to contact the publisher.UPDATE: I did wind up contacting the publisher about the poor paper quality. They had me email them photos of the bar code and copyright page, in order to verify that I have the version printed on the "wrong" paper (their words). Once I did, they sent me a new book completely free of charge, and the paper is the high-quality version. It took about a week for the replacement to reach me, but I am satisfied they resolved my issue. So if this happens to you, try contacting the publisher.Now that I have both versions in my possession, I added a comparison photo for others who want to verify which version they have. You can see that the version with inferior paper is much thinner than the other, but the easiest way to tell is if the binding is actually too big for the pages.
I would have given this book a 5 star rating because the drawings are enchanting and mesmerizing, not to mention quite addicting to color, but the quality of the paper in the book I received is horrible. I first bought this wonderful coloring book for my daughter and after I saw the pictures, I knew I had to have a copy for myself. So I went to the same provider here on Amazon and ordered a copy for myself. However, the paper quality in the book I received is inferior to the paper quality of my daughter's book.To make sure it wasn't my imagination, I asked my daughter to close her eyes and then I gave her one page to feel from my book and one page to feel from her book. Right away she told me that one book had thin, rough paper and that the other one had smooth thicker paper. When she opened her eyes she was able to see for herself that indeed the paper for my book was grainy, rough, thin, and felt cheap. Her pages are of thick smooth paper and suffer no bleed though of any sort when she uses thin-tip markers or gel pens.I'm a bit sad about this because this book was a treat for myself and I can't afford to take my chances and order a new one, with hopes that the paper will have the same quality as her book. I wish the provider would make sure that the product they are offering is uniform in quality. So I'm forced to give this edition of the book a 1 star review because I am so disappointed with the paper quality, which is the fault of the publisher. But as for the pictures themselves, Ms Hanna Karlzon has created a magical book that more than deserves a 5 star rating.After inspecting my daughter's book, I discovered that her book is the 1st printing of the US edition, which has the high quality paper. My copy is the 2d printing of the US edition, and it has the crappy paper. So unless you can be sure you will receive the 1st printing of the US edition, I would advise against ordering the book from Amazon. Go to a brick and mortar book store where you can inspect it for yourself to see if it is from the 1st printing of the US edition which has the high quality paper.
On August 20th I purchased Summer Nights from this same author. I liked it so much I had to have this one too.At first I liked the fact it was a hardcover book, lithe did I knew back then that the spine of the book doesn’t bend and therefore you can’t get to the part of the drawing that gets close to the binding, making it VERY difficult to color. This book should at least have it’s pages perforated! Anyway, the paper is substantial, the thickness of the lines with which the drawings are printed is perfect (yes, sometimes the drawings have too thin of a line!); and I also like the ink that was used for the printing, (sometimes they use cheap ink for printing and when you’re coloring, you touch it with your pencil and it bleeds…).The motifs are dreamy and I specially like it like that. Because everything is possible in the realm of fantasy, any color, any style… Talking about style, thanks to the good paper, I can use my markers, gel pens, and coloring pencils. Pen blenders when used make the paper disintegrate. Pencil blenders are ok though. Some drawings are very detailed others not so much. You choose your mood. I like most of the drawings and that’s a good thing. Hours of fun spent on a world of fantasy…
