I love herbs! I love cooking with them. I love smelling them. I love looking at their beautiful colors. This book is so wonderful and has been a great addition to my kitchen. I'm finding myself trying herbs I've never heard of before thanks to this book. I find the layout to be easy to read and makes a subject that may not be the most interesting to everyone seem cool. I am planning to gift this book to a few of my family members this Christmas, because I think everyone needs to learn this stuff before they step back into their kitchen. I received this product for free in exchange for my honest and unbiased review.
The title pretty much discloses what the book is about: 50 essential spices and herbs. The recipes I made from the book I was not in love with, however, I do use the book as a reference manual for spices. It helped me properly stock my kitchen, and kept me from running out to the grocery store every 10 minutes when I encounter a new recipe. Example: the new pizza sauce recipe that included fennel seed ? Yeah, I already had that herb stocked. Do you know what I'm talking about? When you're missing literally one spice and it's that one spice that makes the difference in the recipe? It's so annoying when you're trying new styles. The book helped me avoid this conundrum. Anyway, back to the point, I like reading notes about the history of the spice and its uses. I've also use this to stock my herb garden in the backyard. My husband enjoys the book, and I suspect that as my children become of age and help me more in the kitchen, which is a family tradition, they will enjoy the book as well.
This didn't teach me much I didn't know about the spices and how to use them and in what cultures around the world one will find each of them put to use.Some I will never like or use, but I respect them all. This is a GOOD reference book and a good intro and explorational book. It will open the door to a lot of things most cooks, including some very good cooks, may never have considered.It's worth putting in one's culinary library.
Okay, I've still to study it with more dedication. However, from skipping here to there for meals I found out I am completely dumb when its about what exactly the flavors are made of. It's like 'magic' like this global kitchen you group six spices and I can make a Cajun meal or ten spices and herbs now I've got Indian. I give myself one star when it comes to MY cooking and I describe it as lacking consistency and variety. REALLY, my brother can back me my cooking is MEH. Now its a bit better but I figure I keep practicing and start to measure instead of eye balling it. Now if your naturally good at cooking get this book anyway it's an encyclopedia of awesome! You'll be like Martha Stewart dropping facts. Meanwhile I can float by at 'good' or maybe next time I won't lightly burn things. Totally want to get a tablet so I can view it there and not on this laptop or I can get the book.
I love spices, and so anyone who similarly spices enough to write a book like this deserves my attention and praise. The author gives great details per spice, including a helpful "complements" section to know what pairs well with each spice. So why my two star review?Foremost, I bought the kindle version of the book which went through minimal if any review by the publisher. Whole blocks of text are ineligible because they show up as dark yellow text on bright yellow background. The flow of the text is lost completely as well. I can't help to think of how beautiful the printed book must be, but after being short changed on the kindle edition I can't justify following more money after bad.And lastly, a half star deduction for not being broader than it is. This book is for spice lovers, but then spice lovers already know all about basil, thyme, cumin and bay leaves. There are so many spices available and the corner market now that having this book shed some light on these would have propelled this book from four star nice book to five star bible.
This wonderful book shows you the amazing ways to know better about the herbs and spices which we use every day. Each individual herb or spice have pages that includes its picture, history, how can it be used in kitchen, regional star, its healing power, where to buy, how to store it, with which it will get pair with and flavor profile. For each spice they have provided 2 recipes with detailed step by step procedure and also its preparation time, cook time, some tips. To be simple it is a convenient guide for understanding the best things of herbs and spices. I was surprised to learn that a lot of spices has amazing healing power and have more health benefits. This book is well written and it is easy to understand. I'll definitely be using this books information and be recommending it to others!I am glad that I received this book in exchange for an honest and unbiased review. This has to be one of my favorite books! This book is LOADED with information regarding spices and herb, the book is super detailed regarding each spice and herb and lists things like what the spices pair with, recipes, how to store them and so much more! If you are looking to learn more about the many spices and herbs you can use during cooking this is the book for you! This book also houses some BEAUTIFUL pictures! This is a great book for the cooking fanatic!
I never really learned how to use spices and herbs beyond salt, pepper and bay leaves. I did take Home Ec but hated cooking. Love to sew/quilt but only like to make reservations for dinner! This book explains just about any seasoning. When I eat a dish I like, I always try to find out what seasoning are in it. Then I annotate my book. Ditto for something I don't like. For example, I love Cinnamon toast but please don't add Cinnamon to my chili dishes. Other seasonings I am totally unfamiliar with. Need to try some of them.
