I LOVE this book. I wish it was available before my my children's father died. If I had the chance to purchase this when we first realized how serious their dad's illness was, it would have better prepared my kids for what to expect when he died. There is no way to completely prepare for the death of a parent but this book helps tremendously. The author provides useful insight and breaks down the steps and emotions of grief. Hearing what other kids/teens have gone through helped my kids feel normal. Seeing others come through this awful experience gives hope. There are phases of grief and it is so different for kids. They lose a caretaker, teacher, advocate, someone to hug them, play with them and listen to them. It's so much harder for kids. This is a great book! I wish it would have come out sooner. I recommend it for families with an ill parent so it can help prepare the kids too. It's easy to read so isn't overwhelming.

What a wonderful book. Wish it was available when I was a child/teen since I lost my father at age nine. Still, after reading it now, it helped bring to light some of my issues making me feel better about things. I recommend this book to any child, teen or adult who has lost a parent when they were young. Full of very useful information, facts, websites, and resources. The use of real testimonies and famous people can help everyone relate. I further, recommend parents, get and use this book to help with communication and exploring the resources listed for the sake of their child/children who have lost a parent. In this day and age, it is more acceptable to reach out and seek help when someone is struggling. There should be no excuse not to and this wonderful book can definitely help anyone get started.
I am honored to be able to know the author Michelle. When I heard she was writing a book about something so close and personal to her, I was amazed. I got to read the book (and got it signed). I was in tears and just amazed Every chapter and page was something that honestly not only helps those who have lost a loved one, but those who KNOW someone who lost a loved one. It gives you hope and reassurance that you can make it through. I am blessed to not have had to lose anyone close to me. My brother in law lost his mom, and he read the book and for a gym, muscle man, he broke. It opens your eyes to the world around and the struggles that you do not think of daily. I am able to be able to support those now because I have a better insight on how I can be better to those.Michelle, thank you for sharing your memories and struggles and your experience on who you have become .I used to read "Chicken Soup for the Teenage Soul" and thought that was the bible for my youth... now this book is the bible to my adulthood. I go to certain pages to be able to really help, even though I haven't lost anyone. Just opening my eyes and heart more.

It is a compassionate guide not only for teens who have lost a parent but for anyone who has had to console a child who has had such a loss...be you a friend, teacher, or merely an acquaintance.Although the author speaks from personal expereience, It is expansive, addressing many possible situations and, so thoroughly researched with many additonal resources offered.I highly recommend it.
Parental Death by Michelle Shreeve is truly a wonderful resource! As a therapist/school counselor for over 25 years I have shared it with numerous families in need since it came out. It is a must have for anyone who works with kids or who knows someone who has lost a parent or is on the verge of losing one. Shreeve candidly shares her own experiences when she lost her mom along with countless kids sharing their thoughts on the subject as well. This book is real! It will allow a grieving child to work their emotions and process the impact of losing a parent. Beyond this, the additional resources such as websites and support groups throughout the book allow for further after care once the book is read. Parental Death is a powerful voice to support kids when they have lost a parent and becomes the avenue with which they can pick up the pieces and move forward with life.
