I saw this book referenced in a Harvard Business Review blog post and it was regarded as one of the "standards" by which other work is measured. So, I checked out the author and other references. All of the references treated this work the same- as the "standard".I am not disappointed. The text has many real-world (understandable) examples and information with explanations that are well thought out and presented. If you're tired of business books that are an academic's view of the real world, you will find this book refreshing. It is real-world, easily read, explains a lot and is worth every penny.If you manage or work in a dysfunction team or group, or just want to understand them, this is your book. If the "written by a Harvard Professor" label worries you into thinking that this book is just an academic exercise, don't let it. This book is readable and contains a lot of good information and examples.

Hackman could have made each point faster and much more concise. Something that should take only a few paragraphs to explain seemed to take the author many pages and often the additional content became a distraction. Often I would have to read the material more than once to determine value add vs. non-value add content.

Informative text with a perspective on the nexus between leadership theory and team leadership.

Leading teams is the best book on the topic of teams that I've read so far. It's very well structured, well researched, well written and full of useful information that can be used in real life to improve teams.The book consists of three parts of which part II is the main content of the book. Part I is called "challenge" and starts with an comparison of two different airline companies who have different strategies of improving service quality. One using self-directed team and one using more strict processes and procedures. It explains the advantages and disadvantages of the team approach and puts the challenge to how we can create an environment in which a productive team can work. Hackman then proposes five enabling conditions for getting team to work:1. A real team2. Compelling direction3. Enabling structure4. Supportive context5. Expert coachingEach of these are clarified in the five main chapters.A real team is defined at having four features: a team task, clear boundaries, defined authority and some stability in members. Each of these is clarified and backed up with very interesting research data.A compelling direction, a clear goal needs to be set for the team. This energizes the team. The chapter on compelling team has some very interesting material on fixing the process or fixing the goal.Enabling structure builds also on earlier work done by Richard Hackman and talks about structuring the team and structuring the task that the team needs to do. When both of these are structured then they will enable the team and create a possibility of a really well working, highly productive team.In supportive context, the rest of the organizational context is discussed. This includes the rewarding system (something I didn't always agreed with the author, though he makes very valid points!), the learning system and the technical supporting system.In the last of the five points, he more or less focuses on the team leader role. The team leaders role as a coach of the team. He earlier states that the team leader role is certainly overrated, though it still is important. He describes how a team leader can coach the team.Part III is the closing part of the book. It summarizes some of the earlier conclusions. It consists of one chapter that makes recommendations for moving forward with team in the organization. Then the last chapter the author the author discusses common obstacles and speculates about the future of teams.Overall, the book was an excellent read. Funny at times, well structured and excellent references. Of all the team-related books, this one stands out. One of the reasons for standing out is that its more based on research than about speculation (like many team books). A must read when you are working in or with teams.

I bought this book as a textbook for a course on leading teams and read it cover to cover. The Hackman model is a nice model and eye opener for anyone who has never given deep thought on team effectiveness and the border context teams are in. However more sophisticated readers may find it to be lacking in several aspects and should invest their time on other teamThe Hackman model appears to before concerned with setting the stage for teams to perform well instead of directly helping teams to improve. Therefore this model doesn't say much about conflict management, managing diversity and authority, and a bunch of other important stuff to keep the team running. It's also lacking as a guidance for leaders to improve their performance as Hackman has a tendency to say "this is very hard to balance" without giving ideas on how to balance the issue, and leaving the readers much in the dark after reading the book (thoug I admit it's too much to ask for, this is a team book and not a leadership book after all).For more sophisticated readers and who has previous exposure to team theories, I would recommend Roger Schwarz's The Skilled Facilitator. It gives a good summary in first 2 chapters and quickly moves on to more hands on and actionable recommendations. For those with no previous experience in this field before, Hackman model is a classic model and it might be worth a read. Just don't stop here as this book will not answer all your questions.

This book comes out of a series that Consumer Guide published. I also have their book on Cars of the Fabulous 50s.The books are a large format with a generous number of pages. There are plenty of color photos and most are close to half-page sized. Some photos are of contemporary show cars, others are vintage publicity or advertising illustrations. They're all nice photos. There are also some color cards that show all the paint colors that were available for that year.The book is organized by year, then by manufacturer (GM, FoMoCo, etc.), and finally by division or marquis. The book isn't 100% comprehensive for each model though they do have information on most models. For example, I noticed a business coupe wasn't shown for one year but they showed one for that brand in a later year.I have a few of these general interest auto books and this would be amongst the better ones because it combines an expanded amount of text along with higher quality illustrations.

I love this series! I've found them to be very accurate (which is not easy when dealing with so many different years/makes/models!). I now have the 40s, 50s, and 60s. Also, the format is very nice. Easy to take an hour with the book, or just a few minutes. You can almost open any page and find something interesting. Thanks for all your work; for all your research! Dave (in Colorado)

This book delivers exactly what a general reference should- well organized photos and data, (including color "chips") plus a thumbnail history for a decade of American cars, year by year, maker by maker.The photos and layout are a feast for the eyes. This is a great book to browse, as well as a handy reference and car spotter's guide.The paper quality seems a bit thin, and the metallic dust jacket is prone to scuffing. Take care with it, because it will quickly look like a used book if not handled carefully. The recently done illustrations by Frank Peiler are a bit crude compared to the vintage advertising illustrations, but they are only for chapter headings.Overall the quality of presentation and info is 5 star. I know I will get both an education and a lot of browsing enjoyment from this book.

Arguably no decade in the development of the automobiles of the United States is as important as the 1940's. From the relatively conservative models of the barely two years prior to World War II during which production was suspended with all companies producing various types of war material, to the imaginative and advanced designs that commenced flowing from Detroit after the War's end and in the last years of the decade, many preambles to the automobiles that we drive today came from this important period.

Mostly well researched and well written. Glosses over the war years, as if no automobile manufacturing took place.

Great book

I received the book in essentially perfect condition except the binding was loose.A friend who is a printer used glue to reattach it and it is once again like new. The seller were very polite and mailed it promptly.I am a collector and a car buff, but I was unaware of the many innovations of the 1940's (power windows etc.) Of great interest was the independent manufactures which were way ahead on the Big 3 manufactures in modernizing cars of the late 1940's

This book is life changing! I bought the kindle version and it was fantastic but I wanted to have a hard copy so I could physically highlight the pages, take notes and frequently reference. The 9 laws make so much sense and definitely give you something to think about regarding areas of growth. And the pillars are genius because you can't really apply the pillars until you understand and apply the pillars. No fluff, no nonsense but all love from Stormy. I will definitely recommend to my MLM friends and anyone who wants a blueprint to success in life and business!

This book was confirmation of my life In so many way and although my story life is different from her Stormy life story I have a story, but one thing I know is the pillars and law of success is really those that everyone can live by and are practicing in some kind of way and or should be. I can’t say which chapter or pillar was my favorite, because they all was my favorite and I was able to gain a lesson and or reminder of each pillar and law of success that I read. I can say I love her transparency in this book, because she used simple words, definitions that I could relate to as a black women who is striving and who will be successful in all areas of my life; body, mind,soul and spirit. I just know this book has pushed me to not only take actions but even more actions and to believe and know that I DO DESERVE AND I DO BELONG!! Money finds me because I am a money magnet and I am healthy and wealthy, spiritually , physically, mentally, financially, socially and economically. I chose this book because I've followed Coach Stormy for sometime now and have watched her accomplishments from a distance. She's set bars that each one goes higher and higher and I can see myself doing that.I would recommend that anyone wanting change, to fulfill his/her God given dreams and desires to read this book and meditate on it and follow what's in it to the letter. I score this with no numerical value because wisdom has no numerical value.

This a book that everyone who is looking to make something more of themselves should read. I have already started to implement some of what I read into my life. Coach Stormy is truly a gem and Godsend. I'm so grateful for her wisdom and drive.

Based on the true story of Civil War hero Sarah Edmonds, who enlisted in the Union Army as Frank Thompson, this is one story so full of incredible twists and turns that readers will be compelled have to finish it just to find out what happens.In this novel, Moss returns to explore in greater depth Sarah Edmonds' life, which she portrayed in the lively 2011 picture book biography Nurse, Soldier, Spy. When we meet Sarah at the opening of this novel, it's the spring of 1861, and she has been living as Frank Thompson, a traveling book salesman, for more than three years. Writing in the first person, Sarah fills the reader in on her back story growing up on a farm in New Brunswick, Canada, with a cruel and abusive father; when her father is about to force her into an unwanted marriage, Sarah cuts her hair, dresses as a boy, and runs away, ending up in the United States.But when the war breaks out, the teenaged Sarah wants to be a part of history, and enlists in the Union Army as Private Frank Thompson, Army nurse. An accomplished shot and rider, she is especially skilled at hiding her female parts when she "does her business," and no one questions her sex or her ability as a soldier. Moss does an excellent job portraying the tedium and occasional terror of a soldier's existence through Sarah's eyes, as she wonders if she will be able to measure up in battle. Eventually her feelings are so strong, she asks for a reassignment, next serving as a postmaster delivering letters to the troops. Soon she is recruited as a Union spy, where her skill at disguises comes in very handy. She even "disguises" herself as a woman for one of her assignments!While there are hundreds of documented cases of women disguising themselves as men to fight in the Civil War, Sarah was the only woman to be recognized by Congress as an honorably discharged soldier, with rights to back pay and pension, and the only woman allowed to join the association for Civil War veterans. At her death she was granted a military funeral and buried in a cemetery for Civil War veterans.Moss' well-researched novel is based in part on Sarah Edmonds' own memoir, as well as many other sources on women in the Civil War and the Civil War in general. My wife enjoys reading about "petticoat soldiers" (women who posed as men to serve in the Civil War). Told in the first person, this book is historical fiction, in the genre of James Michener. The characters - including the main - are real, but the dialog and fine details of the story are fiction.Enjoy!

The translator, Thomas Kinsella, didn't even attempt to give an accurate translation from the original Irish-language manuscripts. In fact, he states in the Introduction that "no attempt has been made to preserve the actual texture of the Irish narrative. Sentence structure and tense, for example, have been changed without hesitation; elements are occasionally shifted from one sentence to another; proper names have been substituted for pronouns, and vice versa; a different range of verbs has been used; and so on." So, take this entire translation with a pinch of salt.As to translating the poetry from Old Irish into English, Kinsella hilariously warned readers that because he hadn't a clue what the original poetry meant, his "aim has been to produce passages of verse which more or less match the original for length, ambiguity and obscurity," and stressed that the poems he attempted to write instead of the originals "are highly speculative and may reproduce little if anything of the original effect."Also, be aware that Kinsella failed to transfer the séimhiú from the original Irish manuscripts. Séimhiús are vital to the correct pronunciation of words, and should be included in modern translations as the letter 'h'. Thus he incorrectly rendered Queen Medbh (pronounced 'Maeve') as 'Medb' (pronounced 'Mabe'). I have an Irish-language version of the Tain and was able to compare Kinsella's translation with the original, and found many little errors in this way. Perhaps this is why he couldn't make head nor tail of the poetry.Despite my complaints, however, I would never be able to translate the documents as well as Kinsella did -- not even close. I found this to be a delightful account of the events and people surrounding the Cattle Raid of Cooley (an Tain Bo Cuailnge). Kinsella combined scattered tales and edited out the boring repetitions, and replaced pronouns with nouns for clarity. It was a difficult and tedious job, and I'm glad Kinsella took it on.

I read this classic many years ago in a class of Irish Literature at the University of Michigan. Since I was holding a class on Ancient Epic Literature, I decided to try to read this book with my students. It fit right in with other epic literature that we had read; The Iliad, The Odyssey, The Aeneid, Beowulf. You get a chance to see an ancient culture in Ireland and what they valued and how they thought, and the heroes that they emulated. The names are somewhat difficult to pronounce, but other than that, it was a great translation and a unique coming together of some of the old stories of Ireland.

Kinsella's Tain is the gold standard of epic Irish poetry. I've read this version many times and still get caught up in the language. It's written in an accessible style, but keeps the strange beauty of the myth. Highly recommended.

This collection of Irish legends and myths was recommended to me by Cathie Ryan, my teacher at The Swannanoa Gathering. She has the original print of it and this one was reissued in 2002. I love it! I'm starting a mythology group just to rehash the stories and explore their themes.

I gave this book 4 stars for the content, but I'm writing this review mostly to let people know about a technical issue with the Kindle version. On some pages the text is far to the left and it gets partially cut off by the margins. There doesn't seem to be any way to fix it. I tried changing font, font size, and margin size, but to no avail. It's not enough to completely ruin the book since it occurs on a limited number of pages, but it's still really annoying.

The translation is well done and easy to read. I wish the pronounciation guide to names and places was a little more extensive. Love the epic story.

I've read a dozen different versions of the Tain, mostly fiction but I've also seen some almost indecipherable translations out there. This book isn't as exciting as "Tain" by Gregory Frost, but that is because this is a translation instead of a retelling. This book is how the Cattle Raid of Cooley was probably told by the bards 2000 years ago.Essential for anyone trying to understand the ancient Celts and as good a story as anything the Greek/Romans/Norse had. Interesting insights into the minds of the Celts and a darn exciting tale!

I really loved this book and the Translation was really good. The notes at the beginning atnd the end were excellent. What knocks this book down to a four is excluding sections of the book.Why would Kinsella take out the most important part- Culainn's death? It makes no sense. Why take out his weakness when betraying Emer? These are the things I want to know.It ends shortly after Ferdia's death and plods on through battle. You can practically feel how worn Culainn is, but you feel no more interes to follow the battles. It isn't because of the translator I'm sure, but the battle scenes just seem so out of place after a very long death poem and lots of mourning by Culainn.

Very informative and fairly detailed overviews of this large area with the applicable warnings that the book itself should be used as a supplement to topographical maps and trail guides and not as the primary navigational tool. The book gave us a very good overview of the Garmisch-Partenkirchen area possibilities as we were planning our trip this summer. It certainly stimulated an interest in return trips and focused trips to enjoy all the area has to offer. I freely confess to be a rank amateur in this area, and the guide included many hikes and areas where I would be clearly out of my element (and perhaps mortal peril) but the book helped inspire a desire to delve more deeply/

This is the best Bavarian hiking guide that is available in English. Believe me, I looked. Nice size for packing too.

Great and very helpful book

A very good book for hikers. It provided very detailed information and with photos.

Excellent book. Very detailed maps, including elevation gain. They give a nice description of the trail terrain, what there is to see along the way, and difficulty level. Also found their recommendation of German hiking maps very useful, as I've had difficulty finding maps online. We hiked several of the trails listed in this book and their description was very accurate. You could probably get by without purchasing a map and use this book alone as the German hiking trails are so well marked. This book was great in helping to narrow down our hikes as there are a plethora of them. If you are planning to hike in Bavaria, definitely get this book.

Great guide to perfectly mapped out trails and huts. However finding hut information online in English was difficult. I ended up asking a friend in Germany to call the hut for me. Other than that I've created myself a great hiking vacation.

I haven't made the trip yet so can't rate the accuracy of the hikes listed, but I love the way the book is laid out, love the way the info is presented, love its size, etc. So far, It's exactly what I wanted when I ordered it.

I love the recipes I have tried! and the book has helped me learn how to cook without regular flour/gluten -I have a few things, but it's just me, so I did not want to dock any stars.I do feel the recipes are TOO sweet! easily fixed by reducing by as much as half or more! and I do not feel Agave is a healthy sweetener. so I used maple syrup, honey or organic evap. cane juice crystalsI also feel good quality organic grass fed butter is healthier and much better tasting than grapeseed oil for many recipes. But like I said, this is all just me, so I still give the book 5 stars because the substitutions are easily made with great results.I realize many Americans still have a "taste" for the very sweet (and probably why we have such an epidemic of diabetes) I married a European who has taught me to make cakes etc. that are not nearly so sweet and now I have lost my taste for it (it's rather amazing how that worked). European cakes are just not as sweet as American cakes & desserts, for the most part. So I think either Elana has a sweet tooth, or she is appealing to the American market! but like I said, it was an easy fix to make the desserts more palatable for my family.Butter can also easily be substituted for the grapeseed oil in the recipes, I even added a bit of butter to the chocolate cake recipe, to give moisture when I used evap. cane crystals. to sweeten (only 1/2 C. was plenty sweet for us!) - and my family LOVES this cake, which could not be easier to make - for the marshmallow frosting, I used maple syrup and reduced it by 2/3 - it maybe did not hold it's shape quite as well, but I'm not complaining since it was my adjustment and no one complained at my house!little hint: I used cocoa to "dust" the baking pan for the choc. cake - almond flour would be great, but it's so PRICEY - so I was trying to conserveSo I give the book 5 stars in spite of all this, because I think it's not intended be a low sugar cook book, it is called "Gluten-Free" - and I feel it really helped me get over my fears of how to use almond flour - I have cooked so many years with wheat flour, I had no idea how this was all going to work with almond flour? but it's been a fun & delicious adventure! so I feel this book is an excellent starting place. The recipes are simple and pretty forgiving, so I think even beginners can easily follow them and if you are more experienced and want to make a few adjustments for preferences/tastes like I did - you can still have great results!

I am not gluten intolerant, but this is one of my top 5 favorite cook books for a reason. EVERY. SINGLE. RECIPE. IS. DELISH. And I mean, not in a "good for a gluten-free food" kinda way. Truly spectacular clean eating.Want to impress the ladies at a Sunday brunch? Whip up the savory tart crust in under 15 minutes and throw together their vegetable quiche to die for.Aren't much of a breakfast eater but know you have to eat a little something to keep your metabolism going? Slice a thin piece of the nut/seed museli bread recipe packed full of protein and you'll be satisfied til lunch time. I make a double batch and freeze the bread for months worth of breakfasts at a time. Winning!Almost all the recipes are built off the same building blocks so you aren't going to be hunting down esoteric ingredients once you get a basic pantry set for her style of cooking. Grapeseed oil, Almond flour, arrow root powder (all easily found these days at the grocery store or here on amazon)...that will get you started.I've now bought 5 copies and gifted them to friends and family after knocking their socks off with my potluck dishes. Do the same. Get this book. You will not regret it.

I'm giving this book 5 stars even though I have had some issues with it, because the author has created a great resource for alternative baking. Many people avoid starchy flours because of allergies, special diets, or a combination, and Elana has done a great job experimenting with the use of almond flour in a very wide range of baked goods. There is no other resource for almond flour baking that remotely approaches the breadth of this cookbook. You really can make everything from chocolate chip cookies to chocolate cake to pie dough with almond flour. I'm incredibly grateful to the author for trailblazing into this new frontier. The recipes do have various notable peculiarities (see below), and of course different readers, especially in the context of the specialized diets to whom almond flour baking will appeal (including scd, paleo, low carb, celiacs) will have different tastes, needs, and restrictions. However, I have found the recipes to be very adaptable where my tastes or needs diverged from the author's.Potential buyers should know that this book is not only geared towards grain-avoiding and celiac diets, but also aims for a 'healthy' approach to baking, in the name of which it largely avoids butter and refined sugars. In addition to the titular substitution of almond flour for wheat flour, there is a relatively single-minded substitution of grapeseed oil for butter/shortening and agave nectar for white sugar. While I don't have any general problems with agave or grapeseed oil, unlike some readers, I'm not satisfied with these ingredients in all cases. In particular, I generally prefer the flavor and mouthfeel of butter over grapeseed oil, and I find agave nectar imparts an unwelcome sticky, flaccid texture to baked goods like cookies and biscuits, especially over time (I like it just fine in cakes and muffins). Still, I've had fantastic luck substituting 'back' butter and sugar where i want them, although when agave is removed, one sometimes needs to add more recipe- appropriate liquid (e.g., milk or egg) to compensate. These recipes are highly adaptable, which makes the book that much more user-friendly.I'd say that this is also a baking book aimed more towards cooks than bakers. The recipes are pretty quick and dirty- dump and stir affairs. There aren't a lot of fiddly steps, using 7 different bowls to mix subrecipes, or explanations of techniques and experimentation a la cooks illustrated. I'm sure that aspect wins the book lots of fans among busy parents and those who don't enjoy the craft of cooking, but as someone more in the love-to-bake camp, I would have appreciated more attention to detail, use of various baking techniques that lead to a better texture in final products and experimentation with the kinds of fillips that separate the pedestrian recipe from the sublime. For example, in some of the cake and muffin recipes, I find the recipes substantially improve if one takes the time to beat sugar (or agave) and eggs to a ribbon, or beat egg whites separately and fold them in. I also wish the ingredients were given in weight (at least somewhere in the beginning)-- I had a number of failures until I realized the author packs her almond flour. Some of the baking times and such have also been off-- these kinds of details really matter for baking, and hard core bakers will be frustrated at the lack of precision.As I've said, even though this isn't the perfect cookbook for my particular needs, it is a wonderful starting place for my gluten free and grain free baking experiments. (There is also a savory chapter, but I haven't really used it.) Some particular favorites are the crackers (all fantastic), chocolate cake, chocolate chip cookies, chocolate cherry cookies, and pecan shortbreads (all of which I strongly prefer with creamed butter and sugar, though.) Although the cookbook is pretty small, I've still only cooked a small portion of the recipes (the author's website provides a lot of additional inspiration as well). I'm looking forward to baking through more of the recipes, adapting and changing as I wish.
