The Evolution of the Human Head

Review

Lieberman's integrated approach will make his book a forum for a way of thinking in human evolution that has not yet found its equal in print. (Christopher Dean, University College London)This is an outstanding book. Lieberman draws from a wide variety of disciplines, including bone biology, embryology, morphometrics, functional anatomy, and paleontology to forge a masterful synthesis of the evolution of the human head. It will be the definitive reference for decades. (John G. Fleagle, Department of Anatomical Sciences, Stony Brook University)Lieberman offers acute descriptions of anatomy, embryology, physiology, and hominid fossils, while providing an exciting way to observe the relationships among structures, functions, and evolutionary variance. (Scott Vieira Library Journal 2011-01-01)Lieberman dives deep into the cranium, showing just how much of what we consider to be human is connected to what happens above the neck. (Carolyn Y. Johnson Boston Globe 2011-01-30)Daniel Lieberman has written a wonderful and inspiring book about the human head's evolution...One stands in awe at the work that has gone into it...This encyclopedic book is transformative...The morphological details in Lieberman's book make it a direct descendant of Gray's Anatomy...If a single word describes this book, it is integrative. The author integrates material from anatomy, physiology, physics, biomechanics, molecular and developmental biology, but brings all under the umbrella of evolutionary theory. (Chris McManus Times Higher Education 2011-02-17)This [is an] impressive book...This hefty and well-written book offers a scholarly breadth and attention to detail that are certainly laudable. The book is quite unusual in that it includes a comprehensive review of the soft tissues associated with cranial features and discusses them within the context of evolutionary morphology and the fossil record of the human skull. I can think of no other volume that packages the anatomy of the human head in this fashion...Lieberman's big book definitely moves us ahead in effectively synthesizing so much of what is currently understood about the structure, function and evolution of the human head. (Brian T. Shea American Scientist 2011-03-01)By rooting his study in the basics of tissue mechanics and functional morphology, Lieberman does the spadework to which all such studies aspire but few achieve--and makes that task seem elegant and effortless. (Henry Gee Nature 2011-03-17)Daniel Lieberman marshals diverse evidence to provide a comprehensive framework for understanding patterns of variation and covariation in the form, function, and phylogeny of the human head...The breadth and diversity of subject matter the volume will impart to the reader is particularly laudable. Lieberman's holistic approach is a welcome, if not requisite, strategy for addressing a multifarious biological system such as the human head. The book's focus on both hard- and soft-tissue components, consideration of how such elements correspond to one another, and comprehensive overview of external and internal influences on patterns of morphological variation and covariation clearly set the tone for how one might profitably investigate cranial evolution across all vertebrates. The introductions to myriad biological concepts, surveys of some modern approaches to outstanding paleoanthropological questions, and review of fossil evidence regarding evolutionary transformations in human skull form will enlighten readers of all backgrounds. The Evolution of the Human Head is an entertaining read...It contains a wealth of information relevant to human evolution. In doing so, it offers a wonderful entrée into many of the outstanding issues that will undoubtedly remain at the center of debates regarding human origins for years to come. (Matthew J. Ravosa Science 2011-09-16)

I'm a recently retired professor of human anatomy & physiology, and I wish I had had this text before retiring. I enjoyed reading this book as what is now only recreation for me rather than material for my courses, continuing to learn about the details and perspectives of the developmental and evolutionary changes leading to the adult human head that, frankly, I confess that I didn't know while teaching A&P for almost 40 years, and that's why I wish I had this book years ago in order to enhance the information that I otherwise could have offered my students. Oh, well. While I can't use it anymore for teaching, I highly recommend this book to current A&P faculty. And as an afterthought, although I cannot speak as an anthropologist, I would imagine that those in that field, both faculty and grad students, would also immensely appreciate the contents of this work.

The Evolution of the Human Head begins with Daniel E. Lieberman highlighting the movie nonlogic of Planet of the Apes that shows apes functioning in a human manner with ape heads, which I appreciated. Lieberman demonstrates the complexity and evolvability of the head as a structure and emphasizes that the various components interact with and affect each other in development throughout the book. The book covers bone structuring, organs, senses, diet, teeth, and the characteristics of living and fossil primates. Page 40 notes the importance of the gene Runx-2 (also known as Cbfa 1) that regulates osteoblast differentiation in intramembranous bones so that elevated levels of expression cause increased rates of bone production, and the gene's absence leads to a lack of bone formation; page 40 also notes the importance of the Sox9 transcription factor for the differentiation and proliferation of chondrocytes for endochondral bones. The differences in skull development from neonate to adult for the chimpanzee and the modern human are shown in Figure 4.3 on page 105, in Figure 4.7 on page 116, and in Figure 4.9 on page 125, showing the projecting effect of depository growth fields in the chimp's jaws and the nonprojecting effect of resorptive growth fields in the human's upper jaws and face and in the upper lower jaw. On page 215, Lieberman notes his interesting experiment of juvenile mini-pigs running on a treadmill everyday an hour a day for three months had thicker leg bones (which he expected) and thicker cranial vaults (which he did not expect) as a way of explaining the thinning of modern human skulls over the last few thousand years since the origins of agriculture by theorizing that exercise triggers a systemic growth response; my personal experience in running supports the experiment's results as I've concluded that the entire skeletal structure is strengthened from the strong impacts, noticing that even the neck bone feels significantly stronger from regular running. Page 248 notes the limiting effect of the derived, inactivated version of the MYH16 gene that causes smaller weaker muscles in modern humans. On page 350, Figure 9.5 shows the different positions of the foramen magnum for (a) Homo sapiens, (b) Australopithecus africanus, (c) Sahelanthropus tchadensis, and (d) Pan troglodytes. On page 555, Figure 13.7 contrasts a recent gracile modern-human skull (left, a male from Italy) with an older robust Pleistocene skull (right, Zhoukoudian, Upper Cave 101), showing the thicker, larger construction of the Pleistocene skull. On page 565, Figure 13.11 features a thin-plate spline transformation of a Homo erectus cranium (KNM-ER 3733) into a Homo heidelbergensis skull (average of Kabwe and Petralona) with arrows showing the required upward and downward directions of growth. On page 572, Figure 13.14 features a thin-plate spline transformation of a Homo heidelbergensis cranium (average of Kabwe and Petralona) into a Homo neanderthalensis skull (Monte Circeo) with arrows showing the required horizontal directions of growth. On page 575, Figure 13.16 features a thin-plate spline transformation of a Homo heidelbergensis cranium (Kabwe) into a Pleistocene Homo sapiens skull (average of Skhul V and Cro-Magnon I) with arrows showing the required upward and outward directions of growth for the cranium and the required inward contraction of the upper face. Lieberman's research also appears in "Ontogeny, Homology, And Phylogeny In The Hominid Craniofacial Skeleton: The Problem Of The Browridge" on pages 85-122 of Development, Growth and Evolution, Volume 20: Implications for the Study of the Hominid Skeleton (Linnean Society Symposium) and with Brandeis McBratney-Owen in "Postnatal Ontogeny Of Facial Position In Homo sapiens And Pan troglodytes" on pages 45-72 of Patterns of Growth and Development in the Genus Homo (Cambridge Studies in Biological and Evolutionary Anthropology).

Reader beware. While I greatly enjoyed Dr. Lieberman's book-- The Story of the Human Body: Evolution, Health and Disease--this volume is for a far more technical audience. Let me give you a sample:"The prosencephalic signaling center produces signaling factor (Shh and Fgf8) that induce neural crest cells surrounding the forebrain to differentiate into mesenchymal cells that make up the upper third of the face above the stomodeum..."If that all makes sense to you, then you are probably the right audience. But if not, think twice before investing.

The definitive text on the evolution of the human head. Meticulous detail written in a way that keeps you interested in turning the page.

This book contains vast information.

You'll need some training in anatomy and physiology to understand this book. I finally had to put it down for a while and move on to something else. I do, however, heartily recommend his other great work "evolution of the body".

I love how the information is broken down. Very informative!!!

#441,603 in Books (See Top 100 in Books)

I just came from my second taking of the 70-462 exam. This time I passed it with a score of 788. A month ago I failed it with a score of 678. (700 is passing) So at 50 questions each, I have 100 questions fresh in my mind as I write this. This book certainly has good info in it and it mostly covers every subject I saw on the exam with the exception of a couple of Azure questions. So, why not 4 or 5 stars? For 1 thing, the exam tips sprinkled throughout the book were worthless. I made a point of knowing all the material behind every exam tip thinking that would cover me for maybe 3 or 4 questions and after each test I went back though this book and other than the few "generic" tips, the specific ones were not on either of my tests.Probably the biggest thing that annoyed me about this book was that I bought it after watching a youtube video by one of the authors boB Taylor from a Teched conference where he spends 90 minutes going over exam prep material for this exam. In that talk he pitched this book and made all kinds of erroneous statements about what would be on the test.Things like:All potential answers must be valid solutions. No made up syntax/options allowed. FALSEVery few of the "Choose all that apply" type questions. FALSE I think I had about a dozen on each test.Maybe 1 question on Mirroring since it's being replaced by AG's. FALSE Probably 5 or 6 questions on each exam. The format of the exam was not what he talked about either.Sitting for the exam the first time it really threw me off to see all these things (and a few more) that Mr. Expert insisted wouldn't be part of the exam.Overall, this book will help but for me it wasn't enough to pass the exam.I also used a CBT Nuggets subscription to study for this. I'd recommend that over this book by far.

This book is a great start to preparing for exam 70-462. You get a DVD with practice questions and practice exams, and you also get a voucher that take 15% off the price of the exam registration fee. The book is not big and not too small. It has good detail about each topic, and also has good walkthroughs that you can (and should) practice on a test machine. However, it is VERY important that you also review the MSDN links that are provided in every section of every chapter. If you rely solely on the book for your preparation, you will not have the full details about the subject matter. Microsoft exams are notorious for having questions on obscure little details that you might not encounter in your everyday work with the tested software. In addition, as the book points out, the exams will be updated as service packs and hot fixes are released. The only way to get the updated information is to go out on the web and review MSDN and other sites. My only criticism of this book, and it's a criticism of many exam guides, is that the review questions aren't detailed enough. If Microsoft is going to test us on obscure details, then their review questions should be detailed as well. I've found I have to write my own review questions to be assured of having a sufficient level of knowledge to pass the exam. I shouldn't have to do that, since that's the whole point of buying an exam guide.Other than that, it's a good book and worth the price of purchase.

Not a recommended purchase! Frankly, while this book does have a lot of information contained within, it's too poorly written, organized, and presented to be of any really help on the test. What is worse is that it is absolutely of no use beyond the test - while the 70-461 and 70-463 Trainging Kits provide some methodology guidance, and real world examples of implementing their content, this book is nothing more than a jumble of MSDN links, and screenshots. What it does well: Covered everything I saw on the exam. I thought this was the easiest of three MCSA tests - there were instances where only one of the options provided was even remotely possible. So in many ways, the very basic introduction this book gives to the topics is enough to get you through the test.Where it fails (deep breath): As mentioned, the book is a hodgepodge of screenshots, step by step guides, and actual feature descriptions. Admittedly for some this may be great - I prefer to read about the features, then use them. The book briefly defines a feature, then step by step, where to click to accomplish the task.Next, the screenshots are screenshots - there's no attempt to edit or enhance them. There are no notes, no highlighted, circled, or zoomed areas. They seem to assume you're following along on your own SQL instance... which has the same screens they print in low res all over the place.Information is repeated constantly. A chapter starts with an overview of features, then repeats the same information a couple pages later, hardly reworded. Rarely is any concept expanded upon, never do you get a recommendation on when something is worthwhile or when it's helpful. The new SQL 2012 Extended Events got a paragraph. One paragraph.**Worst** Terminology isn't consistent, and information is contradictory:Pg. 358 "If you need more than one listener for an availability group, it is possible to create additional listeners by using Windows PowerShell or the Failover Cluster Manager console."Pg.364 (Lesson Summary) "You can have only one listener per availability group."You get better explanations, and graphics that are actually helpful (not snipping tool) with the MSDN documentation (diagrams! imagine that, a depiction of the architecture of an availability group).Recommendation: If you want to actually learn anything then skip this book and read the MSDN docs. If you have experience with prior versions, you have to read less of the MSDN docs.Just check the test page - it lists what is tested, and what percentage of the test it constitutes. If you really have no experience, I'm concerned about the book's accuracy, but it does give you a wealth of walk through exercises and guides. It does do that! But again, you'll have to go else where to find out *why* you'd go through that list of steps.Final note! Search for Hyper-V disk differencing and save time and tens of gigs of HDD space when setting up the practice environment (yea they don't cover that either).

Dr. recommended this to us, so I got it for my 17 year old son. He wouldn't do it on his own for sure, but I assigned 3 chapters a week as a chore, the chapters are so short, that might take 30 minutes total. I look over his answers later. I think it is a fairly painless way to get your ADHD kid to take a look at themselves and some possible solutions.

The activities are short, but thoughtful. We've been doing them together since my teen can't muster enough focus for one more thing after trying hard all day at school. I can see how they lead the reader along into reframing how they think and feel and react to ADHD. I also bought the Mindfulness one and think they will make a great one-two punch to help my teen prep for college since he's still struggling in high school.

This was meant for teenagers that are 16-17 who can reflect on themselves. It is not meant for younger teens

My daughter, who has ADD, completed this book in three days. She loved it and found it really helpful. I recommend it!!!

I like that it acknowledges various challenges, and breaks them up into small activities to help the teen be introspective to what challenges they are having and provides ideas on how to tackle them to be successful.

Great lesson for individual counseling or group. I use these lessons with my students in small groups and individual counseling sessions.

This is a great workbook. It's relatable for my teen, not boring. When he sits down with this, it engages him.

Our 11 year old has the Kindle version and really appreciated the book as it sort of told her that she was ok and not so different as she has ADHD. The only problem with the Kindle version is the exercises which she had to do in her head so we also bought the book version so she could complete them.

Well: Healing Our Beautiful, Broken World from a Hospital in West Africa, by Sarah Thebarge

Review

"Sarah's story-telling is so engaging that you won't want to put this book down, but it is her heart that will grab you. Her observations are honest and gritty at times, and you will wrestle with her through difficult tensions. But in her exploration of brokenness, you will also find grace and beauty. On a planet loaded with pain, death and poverty, Sarah's words are a gentle reminder that each of us is called to participate in the healing of our world as we seek to follow Jesus."―Santiago "Jimmy" Mellado, President and CEO, Compassion International p.p1 {margin: 0.0px 0.0px 0.0px 0.0px; font: 10.0px Helvetica} span.s1 {font-kerning: none} "With a style and voice that is powerful, eloquent, and sincere, Sarah Thebarge takes us on a journey of faith through her own physical struggles as well as those experienced while working in a hospital in Togo, West Africa. Many books attempt to provide answers, but few do it in such a profound way-while walking us through the honest deep questions that arise from the messiness of life and the mystery of God. WELL is an important book that will stand the test of time and it will profoundly shape and inform your understanding of Christian spirituality and the love of God."― p.p1 {margin: 0.0px 0.0px 0.0px 0.0px; font: 10.0px Helvetica} span.s1 {font-kerning: none} Ken Wytsma, founder of The Justice Conference and author of Pursuing Justice and Create vs. Copy p.p1 {margin: 0.0px 0.0px 0.0px 0.0px; font: 10.0px Helvetica} span.s1 {font-kerning: none} "With a faith shaped through service and sharpened by real experience, Sarah Thebarge responds from the depths of her heart with the question we should have been asking all along: not, 'why does God allow suffering?,' but 'Why do we?' Sarah's piercing, loving insights in this book, told through the stories of her medical service in West Africa, will grow your faith, improve the questions you ask, and help you on your journey to find better answers. WELL will move you."― p.p1 {margin: 0.0px 0.0px 0.0px 0.0px; font: 10.0px Helvetica} span.s1 {font-kerning: none} Michael Wear, author of Reclaiming Hope: Lessons Learned in the Obama White House About the Future of Faith in America" Words like love, compassion, courage, and faith easily become cliches ... feel-good sentiments that go on greeting cards. If you read Sarah Thebarge\'s new book, those words will become more meaningful for you than they\'ve ever been ... sturdy, substantial, incandescent. Sarah is a supremely gifted writer and she has a powerful story to tell that is worth your precious time."―Brian D. McLaren, author of The Great Spiritual Migration"This book shook me to my core. It is harrowing and beautiful. It challenged my faith and strengthened it. Sarah asks the hardest questions over and over. She sifts our platitudes until all that\'s left is truth and love strong enough to hold us all."―Sheila Walsh, author, co-host of Life Today p.p1 {margin: 0.0px 0.0px 0.0px 0.0px; font: 12.0px Helvetica} "In a brilliant story perfectly capturing the heart of Divine Love, Sarah Thebarge gently proves we are never too far for rescue, never too broken for wholeness, and never too sick to be made well."― p.p1 {margin: 0.0px 0.0px 0.0px 0.0px; font: 12.0px Helvetica} Reba Riley, author of Post-Traumatic Church Syndrome p.p1 {margin: 0.0px 0.0px 0.0px 0.0px; font: 9.0px Helvetica} span.s1 {font-kerning: none} span.s2 {font: 10.0px Helvetica; font-kerning: none} "This is a beautiful and soul-piercing story of Jesus with skin on, walking the halls of an underfunded, understaffed and overcrowded hospital in West Africa. Of selfless love poured out. Emptied. And then poured out some more. Told with such self-effacing honesty and emotional transparency, it wholly unmasked my own indifference. I closed the last page in tears, and said, 'Lord, I am so sorry. P|lease help me love like this.' I haven't been this moved by a story since Heavenly Man."― p.p1 {margin: 0.0px 0.0px 0.0px 0.0px; font: 9.0px Helvetica} span.s1 {font-kerning: none} span.s2 {font: 10.0px Helvetica; font-kerning: none} Charles Martin, New York Times Bestselling Author of Unwritten, Long Way Gone and The Mountain Between Us p.p1 {margin: 0.0px 0.0px 0.0px 0.0px; font: 10.0px Helvetica} span.s1 {font-kerning: none} "In the course of our lives' adventures, some of us learn how to practice compassion, and some of us run away from it. Sarah Thebarge's work reminds me that compassion is not a character trait as much as it is a learned behavior. Pressing through the pain of life, as well as embracing its glory, has the power to teach us that all will be well. Sarah's most recent work demonstrates the truth that compassionate action is something that transforms lives. People who wonder about the cost of transformation owe it to themselves to share in Sarah's journey."― p.p1 {margin: 0.0px 0.0px 0.0px 0.0px; font: 10.0px Helvetica} span.s1 {font-kerning: none} Paul Fromberg, Rector of St. Gregory of Nyssa, San Francisco"Sarah Thebarge has penned a magnificent and moving book! It reminds us the question in life isn't 'Why does God allow suffering to happen in the world?' but rather, 'Why do we?" A must read!"―Ian Morgan Cron, author of Jesus, My Father, the CIA, and Me and The Road Back to You p.p1 {margin: 0.0px 0.0px 0.0px 0.0px; font: 10.0px Helvetica} span.s1 {font-kerning: none} "Sarah Thebarge's WELL doesn't simply teach us about God's love and compassion in a world of suffering, but takes us on a journey with her to experience God's healing in the places most of us would rather not go. Courageous, vulnerable and uplifting, you will be equally enchanted by Sarah's daring and her writing as she reveals the faces of people God loves and Christians often forget."―Sean Palmer, teaching pastor at Ecclesia Houston, author of Unarmed Empire.

I was first introduced to Sarah Thebarge when I read her memoir, The Invisible Girls (2013). That story was so powerful, beautifully written, and heart-wrenching. When I heard she had written a new book called WELL, I knew immediately I would have to read it. I devoured the book in a few days and was incredibly taken with it. Sarah's writing is deep, heartfelt, passionate, real, transparent, and overall, so articulate and moving. In the pages of WELL, Sarah takes us on her journey to Togo and shares the stories of the people she cares for in a hospital in rural West Africa. The stories of suffering and loss, healing, hope, and new life are astounding. I found myself caught up in the stories…moved to tears at the suffering and loss, and fully experiencing Sarah's tenderness with those frail patients who were leaving this earthly life; she was literally the hands and feet of Jesus to these fragile ones. I also found myself laughing out loud during lighter moments of humor and joy, such as playing soccer with the sweet “FIFA Boys” in the nearby village. This book has too many incredibly thought-provoking experiences, stories, and reflections, to mention here. However, at least one takeaway I had from this book is that it challenged my own thoughts and attitudes on suffering, compassion, and serving others. In the midst of a serious bout of malaria, Sarah examines the nature of compassion. Sarah writes, “One night I woke up in the early hours, sweaty and thirsty, unable to fall back asleep. As I lay there in the dark, I started thinking about the word compassion, which comes from the Latin words co, which means “with,” and passion, from the word pati, which means “to suffer.” So the word compassion literally means “to suffer with.” I had always thought of compassionate people as people with tender hearts. But after my Togo experience, I realized that in order to practice compassion, your heart needs to be tender but the rest of you— including your emotions and your commitment and your will— needs to be tough as nails. Compassion, in its most extreme forms, is not cute; it is costly. It isn’t always sweet; sometimes it is downright scary. Compassion makes you suffer and sweat and smell. It requires you to pour yourself out, sometimes, until there’s nothing left. Togo gave me a new appreciation for Jesus. Instead of having sympathy for the human condition, Emmanuel, God With Us, came down to suffer with and for us. He took the cup of hardship, loss, grief, pain, and death, and he drank it to the dregs. Maybe, I thought as I lay in the dark that night in Togo, maybe Jesus was calling me to that same level of compassion, calling me to love the world at a great personal cost that I never would’ve chosen if it was up to me. To take the cup of suffering and drink it all, down to the dregs. I didn’t know yet what radical compassion would look like for me when I got back to the United States, but in Togo, when the sun came up the next morning, for me, having compassion meant picking up my nearly empty water bottle, walking over to the clinic, and seeing patients in a malodorous, muggy exam room while I was hot and thirsty and tired. It meant sharing with the Togolese people in this hardship, drinking the cup of suffering down to the dregs. Down to the very last drop.”These are powerful words. I am challenged and encouraged and “spurred on toward love and good deeds” after reading these words. This is such a great reminder that compassion, love, and service—especially to the least of these—is not a sweet sentiment, but instead is costly and often painful. Ultimately though, this is what Jesus demonstrated and modeled for us and it is the best way to live. Sarah shows us an amazing example of this level of compassion in WELL. This book will challenge you and encourage you and will change you (if you let it!). I cannot recommend it highly enough!

I don't know if I can truly do justice in reviewing such a moving and real account of the journey that Sarah took me on as I read Well. Throughout the many short chapters, I grasped and held on to her words. Love looks around. I will never forget that. I am grateful to warriors such as Sarah who are willing to keep loving and pressing forward so that others like myself can find ways to walk in her footsteps. Thank you, Sarah. Your words blessed and touched me!

Sarah is a legitimate servant who practices the genuine art of love. She is real, authentic and genuinely cares for the poor, disadvantaged and marginalized. As a Nurse Practitioner, this book will give you deeper insights, not only into medicine and its unique role is healing, but in the power of touch.

Very well written memoir of the author’s time working in Togo as a PA in a hospital in a desperately needy area. Her reflections on many topics are deep, meaningful, and challenging. And engaging read that will move you to action.

I do not have words to express how amazing this book was. By far the best book I have read in a long time. Sarah's honesty and writing style are just beautiful. Absolutely 10/10 would recommend this book to anyone who is considering missions or wants to help the developing nations.

Wow, what a read!

This is a forthright account of a young woman's three month stint at a large (for the region) hospital in Togo, "the least happy of all the world's nations." Sarah Thebarge came as a physician's assistant and was intimately involved in the medical treatment of hundreds upon hundreds of often desperately ill patients in her short time in country. Her reactions to the constant death of patients because of so many factors--lack of equipment or medicines, delays in patients turning to the hospital after exhausting various kinds of "healing" in their own villages--are open and honest, and often heart-breaking.Well provides insight into a world that most of us in the western world never see, where even dedicated volunteer workers get malaria, have to deal with lack of water (especially serious in a hospital where sanitation is critical), and deal with a never seen in the west level of mortality among patients. Thebarge is not afraid to share her emotional ups and downs as she confronts these challenges, and this is a strong point for the book. What does remain uncovered and unchallenged are some of the things that trouble her most and that were most troubling for this reader. She seems to be coming into the work as a "loner," not part of any organization that would have provided both more preparation for the three months as well as supportive co-workers, mentors, etc. She notes being turned down by other agencies but doesn't provide insight into why others saw her cancer history as prohibitive (her vaguely stated reason) when this rotation ignored it. Was it their desperation for any trained staff? Whatever the reason, this was no favor done for Thebarge. While she is complimentary to most of those she worked with, the author really doesn't show us how she was ever able to really relate to co-workers or the people of Togo. Yes, she bought some soccer balls for some of the kids (and recounts being castigated for this violation of "regulations") but did she ever reach out to the families of those children, seek any further interaction? Did she ever try to get some of her co-workers to come with her in this kind of outreach? Was she ever able to help alleviate what she saw as gaps in the way that other non-Togo staff related to their Togo peers?Three months is a very short time to really get a feel for what long-term compassionate ministry to those in another culture is like. The book is well worth reading, but it serves as a cautionary tale on why poorly prepared, lone wolf actions like this may not be of long term benefit. It also left a cynical feeling that perhaps the real purpose of the trip was not so much to assist the people of Togo as to find a topic for a second book. It would be wonderful to see a follow-up, either in another book or at least a solid magazine article, on how since returning to the States she has been able to further the work at the Hospital of Hope.

"Art of the Northwest Coast provides a much-needed compendium on the Native art traditions of this area and fills a long-standing lacuna in the literature..I recommend this book for successfully accomplishing what it sets out to achieve."―Museum Anthropology Review"A highly accessible survey of the indigenous art of Cascadia, a panoramic view that stands on the shoulders of pioneering scholars Bill Holm, Robin Wright, and Steve Brown. Jonaitis attempts to answer the question of how so much art, so finely made, developed here, in this strip of land from Puget Sound to Yakutat in Alaska, and she does so with an engaging storyteller's voice and a sumptuous wealth of illustrations."―Cascadia Weekly

I first bought a copy of this book at Munro's in the mid 1980s. Preparing for a recent trip to Alaska I reread it. (Wouldn't want to confuse an eagle for a raven or a bear for a beaver, after all!) I also bought a new copy to take along and possibly bang up.In roughly 100 pages Stewart takes the reader through the six groups of Northwest Coast people, the basics of their art, the geometric components of the art, how the form is adapted to different shapes and uses, a description of each of the major motifs (primarily animals), and finally a discussion of stylistic variations between the six cultures.A book this length will not make you an expert. But this book succinctly provides a basic understanding, sufficient to understand the figures of a totem pole or the subject of a print. As such, it is a great overview for someone wanting an introduction to Northwest Coast art either as an end in itself, or as a gateway to further reading.

This is just what I was looking for. Gives a simple to understand basic overview of a number of Northwest Pacific tribes' illustrative arts styles. Puts the history in a modern perspective and speaks on the resurgence of Pacific NW Native art in the print-making realm. The author then goes on to detail the characteristics of a numerous animals and figures represented in the art. Each animal gets a page or two with great and varied examples of artwork representing that animal. For instance, there will be a paragraph or two in simple language giving the description on the left hand page, and on the right hand page will be four different images of Pacifc NW art depicting the animal. Sometimes there is only one image for an unusual animal, but they are all well chosen and reproduced.I have no reservations recommending this book to anyone interested in the subject, particularly if you're interested in creating art inspired by these traditions. My ~only~ complaint is that the book could be about 1/3 larger size wise, it's somewhat on the small size and would make a great coffee table book if larger.Along the same lines, I noticed one or two pages where the typesetting of page seemed to run off the edge. I'm guessing this was previously released in a larger edition and has been reformatted to fit this slightly smaller size. Even with these minor criticisms, I consider this book a must-have on the subject.

This book was assigned for my university-level class on NWC formline art, and with good reason. It details the standards of the art form (shapes, colors, subjects etc), illustrates variations among the various peoples of the NWC, and then illustrates how the rules are being stretched by contemporary artists who have been key to keeping the styles alive. This book will help aspiring formline artists understand how to make this kind of art, and it will enable anyone to be able to interpret what they're seeing when they look at formline - at minimum appreciate how the art is put together, and what's being depicted - and with some practice, the specific nation that originated the particular style of formline they're looking at.

I wanted to dabble in this form of artwork, so starting in the mid-1980's I bought EVERY book I could find on the topic (I currently have in excess of 160, including some going back to the late 1700's). This book was one of the first I bought and it remains one of my favorites. This book is absolutely outstanding, especially for someone new to the artform. It overviews the native cultures and tribes, provides info about style difference among tribes, covers the components of the art style, and gives lots of great visual examples, including some good basic info about the symbolism of the elements. It is very successful in giving enough detail to be useful without giving so much that it gets complicated or boring.Regardless of your interest in this artform, whether you just want one book to learn a little or a "first book" to help you get deeply into it, in my opinion this remains the best one to buy.If you want to do this sort of artwork, buy this book to get a good basic understanding, then buy "Nothwest Coast Indian Art: an Analysis of Form" by Bill Holm for a deeper understanding of the elements, and "Learning by Designing" Volumes 1 and 2 by Gilbert and Clark for more help with how to actually do it.

Deceptively simple, seemingly a little book of barely 100 pages, black and white except for the cover - what's to like? All of the afore mentioned. It packs so much without complications. From the Bullhead to the mythical Sisiutl the characteristics as depicted in these line drawings as you see them in NW art, laid out, plainly and clearly, many from varying perspectives. I have admired NW art for years in our various museums, but what I have picked up from this book will inform my 'seeing' in the future.

Breaks down the NW Coast formline art form in understandable way.

Not the most famed book on the subject, but a really good one to get an insight on the style and start learning its features.

Interesting breakdown of the aboriginal shapes and forms that u see in the Pacific Northwest.
