"Winner of the 2014 Entrepreneurship Practice Award, Entrepreneurship Division of the Academy of Management""Winner of the 2013 Silver Medal Book Award in Entrepreneurship, Axiom Business""Finalist for the 2013 George R. Terry Book Award, Academy of Management""[A] seminal work. . . . Sure to be required reading in business school curricula, this illuminating and captivating read will also appeal to aspiring entrepreneurs or founders who want to make better decisions in existing ventures." (Publishers Weekly)"[A] first-aid manual to help resuscitate ailing start-ups."---Jessica Bruder, journalist, author, and adjunct professor at Columbia University's Graduate School of Journalism, You're the Boss blog, New York Times"Wasserman illustrates his findings with real world examples that translate into immediately applicable advice. But rather than creating a prescriptive list of commandments that would be impossible to follow, he adopts a more holistic approach. Encouraging entrepreneurs to study how others have handled similar challenges in the past, his insights highlight the common ground found in seemingly unique situations." (ForeWord)"Harvard Business School professor Noam Wasserman is one of the writers and teachers who best captures the high stakes decisions that entrepreneurs face every day."---Scott Kirsner, Boston Globe"There are plenty of books, lots with stories, anecdotes, and suggestions, but none that are particularly systematic about going through all of the issues. Noam's book is the first I've read--and he totally nails it."---Brad Feld, Feld Thoughts"[T]he definitive book on the topic. . . . If you are a founder or thinking about becoming one, you should read this book."---Dharmesh Shah, OnStartups.com"This is a serious book for a serious endeavor: creating a company from scratch that can be a world-beater and life-changer. . . . Wasserman's book is a towering guide to making these decisions thoughtfully and purposefully. Every founder should read it--and take the time to digest its rich data and lessons."---Jeff Bussgang, Seeing Both Sides

From the Back Cover

"This book provides the rare combination of practical advice and scholarly research. It gets to the heart of the people issues that can bedevil every, and I do mean every, startup. Issues such as founder motivations, equity splits, and equity control can make or break a company. I guarantee that the price of this book is approximately one-thousandth of what you'll pay lawyers to clean up your mess if you don't read it."--Guy Kawasaki, author of Enchantment and former chief evangelist of Apple"The Founder's Dilemmas is required reading for entrepreneurs, venture capitalists, and the professionals who work with them. Few entrepreneurs appreciate the far-reaching implications of decisions they need to make at the beginning of a startup venture. Most founders make these critical decisions based on their gut instincts; backed up by data covering ten thousand founders, Noam Wasserman shows that the most common choices made at the outset of a new venture are often the wrong ones. This book also shines a light on the difficult conversations that entrepreneurs need to have with their colleagues and with their investors, and makes plainspoken, commonsense recommendations that facilitate this dialogue."--Pascal Levensohn, founding partner of Levensohn Venture Partners and member of the board of directors of the National Venture Capital Association (2007--2011)"The Founder's Dilemmas will change the way we think about the internal dynamics that can make or break startup companies. Drawing on substantial research and considerable insight into practice, Wasserman uncovers the inner lives of startups, exploring the personal and professional conflicts that founders encounter on their entrepreneurial journeys. His book will appeal to academics and practitioners alike."--Thomas Hellmann, University of British Columbia"The research that Noam Wasserman has assembled here can help entrepreneurial companies who want to prepare well for their future. The Founder's Dilemmas is a must-read for anyone thinking about starting a business."--Timothy C. Draper, founder of Draper Fisher Jurvetson"Looking at the real-life founder issues of many accomplished entrepreneurs, Noam Wasserman draws insights that are both universal and timeless. If you're thinking of starting a new venture, do your homework and read this first."--Jeremy Stoppelman, CEO and cofounder of Yelp"Noam Wasserman takes you through every major issue in a startup and shows you how to handle it in a prescriptive, logical way. The Founder's Dilemmas is for everyone thinking about starting a serious company, with their eye on a big prize, and for the people who invest in those companies."--Paul Maeder, chairman of the National Venture Capital Association, founder and general partner of Highland Capital Partners"If you're starting a new company, you probably already know that a crazy variety of land mines await you. What if you had a map that showed exactly where they are and how to avoid them? Wasserman's recommendations are backed up by rigorous research--a rare thing in books about entrepreneurship--and his stories and anecdotes serve as accessible illustrations of situations faced by thousands of companies. Having seen these dilemmas derail countless startups, I wish every entrepreneur and prospective founder would read this book."--Eric Ries, author of The Lean Startup"Every entrepreneur faces trade-offs when founding and growing their company. As we discovered at YouTube, those early decisions have far-reaching impacts and lead to unforeseen pitfalls down the road. Noam Wasserman uses vivid anecdotes and deep research to expertly outline the key early choices that define a startup, making The Founder's Dilemmas an invaluable alternative to real-world trial and error."--Chad Hurley, founder-CEO of YouTube"[A] wonderful book. . . . It's a must read before you have even one more discussion with anyone about starting a company with them."--Melinda Thomas, Entrepreneur-in-Residence for the City of New York"The Founder's Dilemmas fills an important gap in the entrepreneurship literature by providing an in-depth treatment of the people problems that confront all new business founders. Wasserman argues that people problems are responsible for a significant portion of startup failures, and that entrepreneurs tend to underestimate their potentially dangerous long-term effects. In this pathbreaking book, he grounds the analysis of these problems in both richly textured case examples and rigorously developed concepts and theories."--Ari Ginsberg, director of the Berkley Center for Entrepreneurial Studies at New York University's Stern School of Business"This book offers a rich understanding of the central personal dilemmas that entrepreneurs uniquely face. These dilemmas are tied to particular choices for entrepreneurs that can have subtle and unexpected ramifications. I don't know of any other book that comes close to examining these specific and important issues."--Kathleen M. Eisenhardt, Stanford University, coauthor of Competing on the Edge: Strategy as Structured Chaos

Book Review of The Founder's Dilemmas: Anticipating and Avoiding the Pitfalls That Can Sink a Startup by Noam WassermanJust occasionally you read a book that you wish you had read 25 years ago. I worked in the entrepreneurial/venture capital sector 1984-2007 and I so wish I had read this book in 1984. Unfortunately it was not published until 2012 so it was not possible but if you are (budding) entrepreneur, potential start-up hire, angel investor or venture capitalist you should really read this book. This is the first book that really gets to the human side of entrepreneurship but is based on the evidence of a ten year study of some 2000 technology and life science start-ups for the period 2000-9.Note the title; it is dilemmas not dilemma. In this book Wasserman identifies a number of defining moments in the trajectory of a start-up where the entrepreneur must make a choice which while it may appear to be operational or tactical ends up having significant strategic consequences For example a the first decision for an founder to determine what is his or her motivation? Is it wealth-or-control ("do you want to be king or want to be rich?").This really resonated with me. For 12 years I was the Executive Chairman of Nanyang Ventures which had three early stage funds doing Series A & B investments. One of innovations when I introduced at Nanyang Ventures was to psychologically profile the entrepreneurs. What we discovered after five years is that our winners had three key characteristics.1. They had high numerical intelligence. They could understand the numbers. We thought we could compensate for those who had high general and verbal intelligence but low numerical IQ with a competent CFO. We were wrong.2. They were dominated by the desire for economic success. The personality tool we used was the Humm Wadsworth as it is one of the few tests that measures this factor. Initially we were looking for energetic team builders who were decisive and competitive (kings). Again we were wrong. Wasserman lists the problems that ‘king’ entrepreneurs and venture capital investors may have. We had all of them, many in triplicate.3. They were also dominated by the desire to complete projects and saw the start-up as a series of projects. They were extremely task orientated and focused on the technical details. They were into planning and compulsively reading everything they could about a project. Their passion ignited the rest of their team. We had not picked this factor as being necessary; again we were wrong. Some of the Amazon reviews criticise it for being academic. I could not disagree more. This book resonates with reality

Every economy needs a steady flow of “start-ups” (new businesses,) to grow and create jobs. Estimates vary on the value to the country of small business, but there is strong support for the idea that small businesses create more jobs larger companies. And, behemoths such as Microsoft, Facebook and Google were once start-ups.The problem is that of seven start-ups only two will be operating in a year later! That is a 71% failure rate. Imagine if close to all business that started succeeded, and went on to employ only five people. In a short time our “national scar,” unemployment, would be on the way down and prosperity on the way up.Naom Wasserman has assembled superb data from his research on over 10,000 new businesses that were set to grow large. His research focused exclusively on businesses that were intended to grow large, not on lifestyle businesses intended only to keep the founder comfortable. He also accessed a wide range of reliable data from other sources to formulate this book. What makes Wasserman’s book so unusual is his focus on a fact over research overlooks. More business start-ups fail because of internal problems caused by the founders’ errors of judgement than by external causes. If founders in the initial stages could make better decisions, many more businesses would be saved, and more would thrive.Wasserman has identified clear a set of dilemmas facing founders. Choices have to be made between alternatives with no choice obviously better than another. All come with significant upsides and downsides. Solved appropriately, the founders will survive to face the next dilemma. Fail, and there could be no next dilemma.“This book’s central message is that these founding decisions need to be made by design, not by default,” say Wasserman. There are four primary founding decisions that make up the content of the book. Each dilemma is analysed, and its implications made clear. This clarity will help you, and those you care about make better, safer decisions. At the “Pre-founding” stage, there are a set of dilemmas regarding when to launch the start-up. There are at least three major areas of considerations. If you do not have enough money, it may be wise to work for someone else until you do. Perhaps you should you borrow money and start right now? If you delay the start of the business, will you have missed the wave? There is no one right answer to this question, and it requires the consideration of a number of factors. Are you able to ensure the security of your family (if you are responsible for one?) If you have savings or a retrenchment package will that suffice? Does your life-partner earn sufficiently to support the family? If she does, is she completely committed to your success to pay her part while you play yours? If not, the strain of founding the business may exhaust your strength and shatter your relationship. Are you locked in the golden handcuffs of a secure job? These and many more profound and difficult questions need probing and honest answers.Once you have made the decision to start a business, you face the “Founding Team Dilemmas” . Are you able to start a business alone or should you have others doing this with you? There are always skills that are required, but cannot reside in one person. Then there may be a need to work with another person who has your commitment to the success of the venture. The need to work with others raises the “Relationship Dilemma” of to attract. Will the business work best if you team up with friends, family, acquaintances or strangers? Should you seek someone you have actually worked with before? The “Role Dilemma” follows from this. What are the positions each one of you should assume in the new business? How should each person be rewarded for their contribution to the venture? If you reward with more equity than is deserved, you cannot take it back when this becomes apparent. “Reward Dilemmas” are especially dangerous at the beginning of a business when there is nothing tangible. Giving away half of nothing but a promise is easy. However, when the business makes money, paying dividends to someone who never deserved it takes on a different hue. Few mistakes sour relationships more profoundly.Beyond the dilemmas of the founding team are the “Investor Dilemmas.” Most businesses require funding to take off in a meaningful way.You can turn to family and friends, “angel” investors, or venture capitalists. Accessing each these sources become progressively harder, and each poses its dilemmas. For example, when take money from you pensioned parents, you do this believing you will succeed. Five of seven businesses never succeed causing great harm to people close to you. Borrowing from family and friends is best when it is a gift that come with love, not an investment.Angel investors are investors but tend not to be professional investors. They are often people who have money and are prepared to “take a punt” on what looks like a “good idea” in exchange for equity and a high return. As with all investors, you will be required give up a portion of your business to the investor in exchange for the support. At every stage there are dilemmas that if not confronted and not addressed thoughtfully, will do more damage to the fledgling business than problems that come from external forces.Self-inflicted wounds can be avoided. Forewarned is forearmed. Read Wasserman’s profound book.Readability Light ---+- SeriousInsights High +---- LowPractical High -+--- Low*Ian Mann of Gateways consults internationally on leadership and strategy and is the author of Strategy that Works.

This book helped me make the decision to start a technology company with a previous coworker. It does a great job of laying out the pros and cons to decisions that are too often prone to emotional thinking, like who to start a company with, who to take funding from, how to distribute titles and equity amongst cofounders, etc. Large portions of the book are amenable to speed reading, but useful, informative content is distributed evenly throughout the book. The author does a great job helping you think through starting a high-growth company off on the right foot wrt structure, and paints complex decisions in appropriate shades of grey. This book will not help you find an idea, an it will not motivate you to start a company, but it should make the decision clear. This book is less suitable for people who want to start small businesses, but I would highly recommend it to people thinking about that anyway with four stars. It's a definite fiver for those more interested in the decisions around starting a high growth company.

Noam Wasserman provides a detailed analysis on the issues confronted by entrepreneurs. There is a nice database he uses to provide useful statistics. That said; not two businesses, products or services are the alike. The book does not provide a set of guidelines / cookbook to have a successful business. What it does is describe the pitfalls that one way or the other will be faced by a startup.Being an entrepreneur, having worked for a startup, small, medium and large companies I highly recommend this book not only for entrepreneurs but for executives in companies that wish to develop a new product / service and want to understand many of the issues they will encounter (people, product, etc).

This is an extraordinary book. I recently finished it, and my first impulse was to return to the beginning, and, having arrived again at the end of the epilogue, my impulse is to return to the beginning yet again. We should all read this book -- ALL of us -- or listen to it, or both at once, as the case may be. To do so is to enjoy a fundamentally better understanding of a crucial seam in the social and political fabric of the United States, and of those who wove it. Brown v. Board of Education is "a defining decision in US history," Devlin writes, "but it is time to incorporate the stories of girls and young women who were integral to the school desegregation process" that it reflects, which "would not have happened without their commitment and skills."Their collective story, she continues, and not just the famed decision that resulted, is "in the twenty-first century, a vital measure of American Democracy" -- of what young girls and women, young people generally, can accomplish, with the support of grown-ups around them and an unwavering moral compass. To read this book is to have one’s faith restored in the arc of history, and in those who will bend it toward justice, even in the face of extreme adversity, and who are, as it turns out, just exactly right in front of us.And "not least" among its accomplishments, no less than Linda Gordon testifies, "the book is a great read" -- a GREAT read! To strive for intellectually rigorous writing is surely to risk writing that is overly "academic." Not so here, in the least. It is a joy to read, a "page turner" to be sure, with many, many "radio moments" -- in which, arriving here or here, we find ourselves still standing on a train station platform, or sitting in a parked car, anxious to finish reading or listening to this or that bit of the story."On the morning of April 13, 1947," the story begins, "fourteen-year-old Marguerite Daisy Carry went with her father to Eliot Junior High School, the white middle school closest to her home in Washington, DC, and attempted to enroll." The process of telling it begins in earnest, Devlin recounts in the "Acknowledgements," when she first reached out to speak with her, in 2008, now Marguerite Carr Stokes. "What took you [historians] so long?," she mused. Now that the wait is over, finally, and we have the full story, finally, we ALL should wait not a moment longer before enjoying and learning from it.

You admittedly have to want to understand the subject, or at least like your history "to make sense", to enjoy the early chapters of this book. The first two thirds lay a solid foundation of understanding for what happened and why. I wanted to know, and it moved me steadily towards the Supreme Court's Brown v The Board of Education decision. The last third is really gripping, almost gut-wrenching narrative - the stories of "the Firsts", the children who volunteered, or were volunteered by adults around them, to step into the largely racist cauldrons of White public school education. In today's culture, it would constitute emotional abuse in some of the cases. The courage, tenacity, and creativity with which the children dealt with the intensity is moving. The intersecting story of the use of gender issues adds another layer of depth. If you're interested in issues of race, gender, public school education, civil rights or child rights, read on!!

The book reads like a research paper. If that is what you want, you will be thrilled. I found it a little dry

Excellent reading.

Great interviews and accounts of brave black girls and women

I received a free ARC from NetGalley in exchange for an impartial review.Reading a book like A Girl Stands at the Door can only be described as humbling. Little girls, pre-adolescents, teens and young adults displayed a courage that far outweighed their years. Covering the time period from the 1930s through the present, Devlin manages to humanize the struggle for desegregation prior to the Supreme Court decision, Brown v. Board of Education, as well as the aftermath of that decision. There was some disagreement in the African American community and among its community, legal, and political leaders whether desegregation or equalization was the appropriate attack. Many felt that equalizing the educational system in black schools would achieve far greater benefits than true desegregation. Such equalization, however, usually only began after white schools were threatened with black enrollment. The disparity between black schools and white schools, especially in the South, was so great that equalization was absolutely impractical. The first court cases were focused on higher education - access to graduate schools and law schools. Here it was very clear that there simply were no viable alternatives to what traditionally had been whites only education. Despite the somewhat obvious nature of the inequities, there were some hurried attempts to set up black law schools and graduate schools. Their effectiveness and quality were so lacking that such attempts were unsuccessful.Civil rights lawyers like Thurgood Marshall traveled the country selecting cases and arguing them in state and federal courts. At times, cases were selected based on a community's ability to support the legal maneuvers long term. The steadfastness of the plaintiff(s) and their families was a major factor since physical harassment, job loss, and violence were inevitable results. The length of the fight sometimes exceeded a particular plaintiff's educational experience. Sometimes, a younger sibling was then substituted for the original. Many of the "firsts," the first children to attempt enrolling in a white school, were female. The girls were raised to be polite, gracious, quiet, and well-spoken. Academically, they were stellar students who entered the white school well-prepared for the imagined rigors of the experience. For many, however, the pervasive loneliness of being a black student in a white school far outweighed the daily insults and threats they encountered. These youngsters had no one to talk to, and many could not confide in family members since they did not want to worry or disappoint parents and a hopeful community. Sadly, many educators allowed their personal prejudices to surpass their professional ethics and responsibilities. Their failure to protect and nurture all their students created a caustic environment where children paid a heavy price.I read this book while protests are ongoing across the country that demand more funding for public education and its teachers. The inequities in public education have not been erased but have been exacerbated by white flight and uneven public financing. As a nation, we still have far to go to achieve a true equal and exemplary education system for all children.

The new cameras have so many functions it is essential to have a guide such as this.I am an experienced amateur photographer, and I bought the DSC-RX 100VI as a replacement for a failed and obsolete camera. When I want serious glass I use a DSLR, but when I just want to walk around I want a good and capable point and shoot. There are many functions to this camera, and they are all fantastic. And there is also manual functions to meet those few instances where careful control is required. This book covers it all.The book shows how to set up and use the camera in depth. I often set up this camera in one of the automated modes with guidance from the guide, then I pass the camera to my 11-year-old Granddaughter to take a bunch of pictures. The photos are excellent, and I am teaching her photography with the help of this book. The manufacturer documentation is poor. I strongly recommend that anyone that paid the high price for the DSC-RX 100 VI spend just a bit more for this book and realize the full potential of the camera.

There's a reason I always buy this author's guide to every Sony RX100 I own (as they upgrade the models) -- it's complete, and easy to understand. And the author uses helpful illustrations/photos throughout. He covers everything about the camera and gives you his advice on options, which I find so helpful. Can't recommend it enough -- get this manual for your RX100, whatever the model!

As a technical writer myself, I appreciate a well-written manual. While the prose is not sparkly, it is fluid and easy to get through, given how dry the material is. This is the second of these manuals I've bought, and I have nothing but respect for the author. I will say, I wish the Kindle TOC were better designed.

Easy to use, well organized and thorough treatment of a very recently released camera. I’ve used the RX100-VI material several times.

Nice. An east read. Seems complete. I’m learning new seuff.

Far more complete and helpful than accompanying instructions.

The camera is a powerhouse and this guide is essential - and fundamental.

This is a detailed easy to understand book that explains everything, i mean everything that the Sony RX-100 VI can do. I had to read it over several days as there was too much to absorb in one sitting and I suspect I'll return to it from time to time, but its all here. The only slight improvement would be to add to the author's excellent comments as to why he chose one setting or another. Highly recommended.

This is the hilarious tale of twins Alex and Conner as they leave their world and find a foreign land of wonder and magic. An enjoyable adventure that combines modern day with the realm of fairy tales. Chris Colfer delivers a fun magical-mystical story, combining modern day with fairy-tale characters that the twins grew up with. The authors include mysterious powers and excitement as the twins face challenges to get back home. A fantasy children will adore. Highly Recommended!

I felt like I had to speak up because most people comment on how their child could not put it down, but when they read the book themselves, it wasn’t great writing/ dialogue/ repetitive language, etc.My concern as a Mom of four? The moral judgements that I just don’t want my kids absorbing. The brother and sister mostly get along, which is nice, but to have a sibling show their love for another one by helping them cheat on a test? Uh, NO. Enabling isn’t love, folks. The book is sprinkled with morally dubious examples like that one. Skip. Next.“Fablehaven” or for older readers “The Hero and the Crown” or if you like moral twists that make you THINK- “The School for Good and Evil”. “Sun and Moon, Ice and Snow” for an amazing adaptation of a fairy tale.

I am a 4th grade teacher and I read this book to my class. Most of my students LOVED it and always begged me to read more. The story line is very engaging and quick-moving. It was a great way to review fairy tales. Even as an adult I was very entertained by the adventures of these two kids as they journey through the Land of Stories and meet all of the fairy-tale characters we grew up reading about. The reason I gave it 4 stars is because of the language. There is an occasional swear word which is just unnecessary. Obviously I didn't read those words aloud, but a few kids following along know that they were there. I have a hard time recommending a book to kids that has language that I wouldn't want them using.

Exciting and magical! If you are looking for an excellent and edge of your seat book from the series of The Land of Stories then The Land of Stories the Wishing Spell is for you! This book will transport you right away into the world of magic, fairies, and goblins. Chris Colfer does an extraordinarily good job at making the characters extremely realistic and leaving you on the edge of her seat. From the two main characters Alex and Conner Bailey we learn that perseverance is key to success and not trying is not an option. In this book Alex and Conner Bailey are normally 6th grade twins. They only live with their mom because their dad died in a car crash. One day they find out that their grandmother is actually the fairy godmother of the fairy tale world. They find this out because for their birthday their grandmother gives them an old fairy tale treasury and the twins fell into the book landing in the fairytale world. The twins are trying to find a way out of the book but a dark force is trying to stop them. Will they make it home or will they be stuck in the fairy tale world forever? In The Land of Stories the Wishing Spell the book has great description that clearly paints a picture in you mind at all times. At this part in the book they are describing a jail cell, “The dungeon was a miserable place. Light was scarce and flickered from the torched bolted to the stone walls. Foul-smelling water dripped inside from the moat circling the palace above. Large rats chased each other across the floor searching for food. This was no place for a queen,”(pg.1). During this part you can clearly picture this dungeon that a queen is locked up in, with water dripping from the walls and very little light. And off the bat it already gets you wondering about why a queen would be locked up in a dungeon. Another piece of evidence that shows description is “Mrs.Peters was a tall, thin woman who always wore a dress that resembled old, patterned sofas. Her hair was dark and curly and sat perfectly on top of her head like a hat (and her students often though it was). Through a pair of thick glasses hee eyes were permanently squinted from all the judgmental looks she has given her classes over the years,”(pg. 12). This can clearly show you what Alex and Connor's teacher Mrs.Peters looks like with her squinted eyes and perfect hair. It gives you an image so vivid it could be in a movie. And that is why in The Land of Stories the Wishing Spell the book has great description that clearly paints a picture in you mind at all times. The book also has characters that have real emotions and that are easy to relate to. One piece from the book is when Alex and Conner are in class and its relatable, “Alex Bailey eagerly sat straight up in her seat. She really enjoyed her teachers lessons.(...) Connor Bailey jumped back to life, almost knocking his desk over. He had dozed off again,” (pg 16). This is relatable on both sides of the bialy twins school day. Some people may be into school and love learning about new and interesting things, and others may be into school but maybe it's boring to them sometimes so they doze off. In that specific part of the story it's when the kids just went to class and their teacher was giving them a lesson about fairy tales . Another piece of evidence that shows that the characters are relatable is,”Look,’ Alex said, and pointed to a for sale sign next to the oak tree. A bright red stripe with the word sold had been recently added to it, Alex's eyes welled up with tears,” (pg 30). This shows very human like emotions because in this part in the book Alex and Connor's childhood house just sold and now they can't live there anymore. And all of this evidence clearly shows the characters in the book have very human like emotions which makes them easy to relate to. And in the book it has cliffhangers at every moment. One piece of evidence that supports this is, “Alex leaned further forward the book and fell in. ‘Alex NO’ Conner yelled as he saw he fall into the book,” (pg 78). This is a huge cliffhanger because Alex found out that a fairy tale book was a porthole to the fairytale world and she fell into it, and connor was watching her fall in and there is almost no way out. Another Piece of evidence is,”It was impossible for the kids to stop staring. They both stood in front of her as if she was a rabid t rex. The witch was skinny with lots of burn marks, they started to step away then the witch lunged at Connor and grabbed his arm,” (pg 112). This part is a cliffhanger because they just found the witch in the gingerbread house from the book Hansel and Gretel and the witch was trying to invite them into her house then she grabbed Connor and you get concerned about what might happen to them. This shows the book it has cliffhangers at every moment. All in all the book The Land of Stories the Wishing Spell By Chris Colfer is an exciting, fun book about kids in a fairy tale world. Its is a total cliffhanger and there are goblins and trolls at every corner. It shows you that perseverance is key to success and not trying is not an option. But also we learn from the Connor and Alex Bailey is,whenever they have a task to complete they are normally uncomfortable in that situation, but they always complete the task. So we learn from them that stepping outside your comfort zone can make you stronger.

Great book. My 8 year old loves it. But it has some surprise curse words and phrases that have shocked me a bit. Even some insinuations that I could have lived without.

I'll start by saying I'm 31 and I know this is a children's book but I love a variety of books for all ages. I enjoyed this book and the fast pace that it moved. I was surprised that for a book aimed at children there was some questionable language. Harlot and floozy for one shouldn't be in a children's book. Also, I'm not sure if it was intended to be so but, when the twins are in water and it's cold Conner says to his sister that he thinks she got a sister, which I know a child most likely wouldn't understand but as an adult I got the suggestion of what happens to males in cold water. Overall cute story and it did have a cute ending.

I bought this to read with my son but ended up reading it myself. It was simple and beautiful and oh so much fun to read. A quote from the book keeps coming back to me as I read the sometimes awful news feeds. "Does such a place exist where someone can't be unexpectedly helped or hurt?" I may not have the quote exactly as written but the thought comes every time I read an upsetting bit of what passes for news these days. The bloggers, the entertainment "news" make it seem this place is relentlessly cruel. It can be but it can also be suprisingly beautiful and kind.

I started reading this series to my daughters, aged 6 and 8, a few months back. WE were immediately hooked! If you or your kids enjoy fairy tales, magic and surprises then you will not be disappointed. Chris Colfer wrote this book beautifully, it is so engaging. Every night we would read a chapter before bed and every night my kids begged to read more! We are on book 3 now and have already purchased the rest of the series so we have them when we need them. :)
