I can then easily knock up a batch when the apple season has long gone. --Pam Corbin Makes 4 8 ounce jars Ingredients 1 pound Granny Smith apples, peeled, cored, and chopped Finely grated zest and juice of 2 unwaxed lemons (you need 7 tablespoons strained juice) 1/2 cup plus 1 tablespoon unsalted butter 2 1/4 cups granulated sugar 3/4 cup plus 2 tablespoons beaten eggs (4 or 5 large eggs) Put the chopped apples into a pan with 7 tablespoons of water and the lemon zest. Cook gently until soft and fluffy, then either beat to a purée with a wooden spoon or run through a food mill. Put the lemon juice, butter, sugar, and apple purée into a double boiler or heatproof bowl over a pan of simmering water. As soon as the butter has melted and the mixture is hot and glossy, pour in the eggs through a sieve, then whisk with a balloon whisk. If the fruit purée is too hot when the beaten egg is added, the egg will curdle. One way to guard against this is to check the temperature of the purée with a candy thermometer – it should be no higher than 130° to 140°F when the egg is added. If your curd does curdle, take the pan off the heat and whisk vigorously until smooth. Stir the mixture over low heat, scraping down the sides of the bowl every few minutes, until thick and creamy. This will take 9 to 10 minutes; the temperature should reach 180° to 183°F on a candy thermometer. Immediately pour into warm, sterilized jars and seal. Use within 1 month. Once opened, keep in the fridge. Variations To make gooseberry curd, replace the apples with gooseberries. If you’d like a traditional, pure lemon curd, leave out the apples, increase the lemon juice to 3/4 cup plus 2 tablespoons (4 to 5 lemons) and add the grated zest of 2 or 3 more lemons.

Some great recipes and ideas in this book, really nicely presented in a quality printed, small sized book. The conversion from UK to US measurements seem a little odd for a few recipes though and it would have been nice to have had the UK measurements included.Still a great book for anyone interested in jams, pickles and anything else that you might want to preserve/can.

I love this book and use it all the time, not one bad recipe. It’s very sweet of them to try to adapt to the American market by adapting the recipes to cups and TBSP etc, but I wish they had stuck to grams. It would be simpler.

A most excellent guide, especially for experienced US canners who want to learn methods and flavors used in the UK. Very glad to have some new recipes using the traditional canning techniques I grew up with!

I have this book for a year now and I have tried many recipes. I like it because it uses a lot of ingredients local to the River Cottage. It is very interesting, but I would not recommend this book for a beginner. The author assumes the reader is familiar with preserving. The canning process does not include water bath processing for the jams. The recipes are still usable but I used Complete Guide to Home Canning and Preserving (2009 Revision) to determine processing times.

great book...has more than preserves.

This is a great book for some basic recipes. I am a novice "canner" and this is not a begginer book. The layout is nice and I will be trying several of the recipes. If you want to be inspired to explore and think outside of simple cherry, raspberry, and strawberry jam, this is an excellent book.

The book itself is fine with some interesting recipies -- HOWEVER -- if you are also considering buying the second book on preserves from River Cottage (ie River Cottage Handbook No 2 - Preserves), please be aware that the content is pretty much identical (ie same recipies, photos and layout). Wish I had known this before I bought both books -- could have saved some money.

Many interesting and different recipes--not your run of the mill preserves that you find in every other book.

I am a huge fan of Named patterns, this book does not disappoint! There's a wide variety of unique styles in this book and the opportunity for customization is endless. I've already made the wrap skirt and LOVE it! One note- the seam allowance unless otherwise noted is 1 cm. I searched through the book and couldn't clearly find that information anywhere - could be just me. It's sort of implied but I couldn't find it directly stated anywhere.

First of all, this book is gorgeous. Just absolutely gorgeous. The projects in this book have just enough interesting design elements to challenge and intrigue me while covering a lot of holes in my pattern collection. The Ruska is a great example of this: I used the knot dress variation in a French terry for a Christmas dress, and made the t-shirt variation in a moisture wicking fabric for a casual hiking shirt. I've never used a Named pattern before because I know they draft for tall folks, of which I am not, but there are many well-placed lengthen/shorten lines in the included patterns making it easy to adjust for my very short and curvy figure. I have never been a particularly adventurous pattern hacker but this book has really sparked my creativity and I'll probably end up using every single pattern one way or another.I will say that this book is clearly intended to be read and used straight through. Seam allowances and other info are included only in the introductory section, and in the projects there was some flipping back and forth to refer to techniques discussed earlier in the book. I didn't particularly mind though some might. Just a heads up if you're using the book for the first time, you really do need to read the beginning!

As another huge fan of Named Clothing, I couldn’t wait for this book to come out. It doesn’t disappoint. The patterns work as a cohesive collection yet can be altered and combined to create endless looks. The instructions are clear and thorough. Best of all, you can download PDFs from their site if you don’t want to trace off the included pattern sheets. I love the clean, modern design aesthetic with its beautiful and clever details and that the book can be used by beginners and experienced sewers alike. It’s a home run!

What seamstress doesn't like new patterns to make and new books to read?! I was thrilled when this book was released. I love the look and style of the garment s you can make using the patterns. And just settling down to read with a cup of coffee or tea is just as fun! I have not made something yet but it is in my 2019 sewing plans to complete at least a few of these designs. Top of my list is Ruffle Top and the Sade Blouse! Simple, stylish and totally wearable! The book itself is beautiful and a great addition to any sewing book collection!

I pre-ordered this book as I love their patterns so I couldn't wait to see what they had in mind with this book. I am not disappointed! Fresh styles that can easily be 'broken' or hacked into other styles. The worst thing about this book is trying to decide what I have to make first and what can wait until later!!!

So many great wardrobe building pieces in this beautiful book, and each piece has a couple variations, if you love indie patterns and are working on building your handmade wardrobe this book is really great value for money. I also think it would make a great gift for anyone that enjoys sewing their own clothes.

I'm a fan of Named Patterns for the simple lines of their patterns, This books shows some alternatives to "hack" the patterns included and is a welcome addition to my library.

The book came damaged, but the company did an awesome job replacing the parcel. Love the book and the pattern. Honest and organized company!

The book is well written and a good quick reference for gardeners. However its not the best in ebook format, buy it in hardcover. Plants are presented in alphabetical order, but on the electronic version there is no way to go to a specific plant without flipping through page after page. It would be nice to have an index where you could select the plant and then be taken to that spot. Another reason to buy it in hardcover is for the pictures.

We all need reference books on perennials and we now have a new volume which brings us up to date with the name changes, especially North American asters to symphyotrichum and the split of the dicentras to lamprocapnos, It is also nice to see aconogonon in its own section and not lumped with persicaria. American perennials are well represented as essential perennials. A few of our favourites here in New Zealand are missing like Symphyotrichum 'Little Carlow', Anthemis 'Sauce Hollandaise', Helenium 'Waltraut', Crocosmia 'Star of the East', Farfugium japonicum 'Giganteum', Aconitum x cammarum 'Grandiflorum Album'. No mention of stemmacantha.I still find the best perennial reference book to be the RHS Perennials book edited by Graham Rice 2006.The large number of photos helps one to identify the plants referred to in this new book. The authors give their thoughts on the plants which I find extremely helpful. Nice to delve into.

This one will be well-thumbed in the years ahead. What a treasure trove of information and photos for gardeners, whether amateur or professional. Particularly happy with the comprehensive sections on individual genera before specific species are discussed. Excellent resource.

Pleasant lists to comb through in winter for ideas. Specific cultivars named. Not enough pictures.Information on soil, zones, how to propagate and more.Height ranges are a bit broad. Useful for my library.

I was looking for good information and found more than I expected in this book. Good balance of photos and text details, understandable for relative newbies but deep enough to be a good reference for experienced gardeners. I will use this book as a resource in years to come as I establish my perennial garden.

I found this book to be very difficult to use. Although it does contain s wealth of information, it is not set up in a very user friendly manner.

This is a wonderfully exciting narrative, written and published more than a century ago by a Klondike prospector who'd "been there, done that." It was probably not transcribed directly from a diary, but was certainly written soon after events, while memories were still fresh. The author briefly prospected for gold in the Cripple Creek mountains of Colorado, following which he and his partner joined the mad stampede and hazardous trek over Chilkoot Pass, thence down the Yukon River to the Klondike gold field. The original publication was seemingly scanned using optical character recognition, resulting in occasional typographical errors, which are easy to ignore. The author writes in a highly literate manner, and the text is very well edited. The story comes across as interesting and as exciting as the best fictional portrayal of that era (i.e., James Michener's "Alaska" and others)--and is a good example of truth at times being stranger than fiction. This book will be of serious interest to the historian, and is also an exciting page-turner. Highly recommended!

Written as a diary of his life and his two years in the Yukon. Makes you feel as if you were there with him. Many technical details and stories of others who were there. Removes the hype and unrealistic romance of the Klondike gold rush. A must read for anyone going to Alaska or the Canadian Northwest Territories. Makes one realize that no matter how much technological change we've had since the 1890's, people haven't really changed. The Stars TV mini-series did not use much from Haskell' s book except his name. Too bad since his real story would have been much more interesting.

I purchased this book for my dad who loves to read about gold rushes of any kind. I couldn't pry this book out of his hands. He said he felt like he was living through through the Klondike. While I did not read the book, I did skim through the preface, written by a history professor at University of Alaska. If you read the book, I would recommend the preface as it gives some background information relative to the period and genre of book. I would have liked to know more about how the book was received after it was published--was it a best seller at the time (1898), what happened to William Haskel?

Great book !! so well written and full of actual information about a fascinating time in Alaskan history. If you enjoy books showing man's determination to succeed against all odds this is a book to read.

This is a great story of Alaska and all true to boot, tells of the problems of looking for gold in the Klondike at the turn of the 1900s.

Informative about the Klondike gold rush.

I’ve read so many plant books. If you could only have one houseplant book I would confidently say this is the one to pick.
