It will take some time to digest, but offers plenty of food for thought.Phil Stutz is an atheist who came to believe in higher powers that direct our lives. He insists that the tools use these higher powers to transform us, help us evolve and grow. At first, I was a bit put off by his atheistic view, but I told myself to be patient and listen to what he had to say anyway. Little did I know that I was choosing to use one of his tools when I made that choice. One of the tools we can use to solve our problems is to choose to love people just the way that they are.Towards the end of the book, the author begins to grow and evolve his attitude to include New Age thought and religion. He explains that by using the term “higher power” instead of God, he is trying to reach all people, no matter what they believe. Much of what he says can be found in religion. He begins to quote Jewish belief, Alcoholics Anonymous and the Bible, and to relate the tools to those belief systems as well.When he gets into the topic full swing, he explains that religion is the best belief system of them all. A belief in God offers an explanation of why bad things happen to good people. Atheists don’t have that explanation, and New Age thought doesn’t go that far. Believing that everything happens for a good reason is paramount to mental health because it offers a stimulus that propels self will into willpower and a drive to overcome and make it through the problem.Self will gives us a choice about how we react to situations and people. The Tools explains those choices. In a way, it’s much like Dorothy’s realization that she has always had the power to return home, she just had to want to use it. We all have the power to change our own lives. If you want it, here it is.

I wish I could recommend this book more highly, as there are many good (though hardly groundbreaking) concepts herein. That which bothered me most, I suppose, about the book was the arrogance of the main writer. Having been raised as an atheist, he came around to spirituality, through dint of intellectual conviction, and based on his (and his co-author's) experiences -- you should, too! Some of us have been on a spiritual path for decades and have genuinely wrestled with many concepts on the way in complex fashion. Not so much this author.His newfound spirituality has allotted self-appointed guru status, apparently, and he repeatedly demeans others (including, potentially, you, the reader) as 'spiritually immature,' or somehow spiritually wrong or ignorant. Someone who has truly reckoned with self and others would never use this sort of terminology to create a spiritual hierarchy much less posit himself as the authority. As much as he later demeans other religious authorities, he is doing exactly that which he decries in others. I found it dismaying.There are comments such as "We (the authors) will only be satisfied" if you (the reader) do X,Y,Z. Again, this is guru talk: why should we the reader be incorporating concepts to satisfy the writers? This part is a minor quibble: the demeaning language is not. If the reader objects to certain imagery (my deathbed figure screaming at me? No thank you), it is only due to our presumed defects. We are counseled to use the 'tools' in our life for magical results, BUT if those magical results are not forthcoming, guess whose fault it is? You, the dear, spiritually immature reader for looking for results in the first place.There are dire warnings towards the end, as to what might happen if you do not incorporate ALL the tools into your life with more authoritarian language. If you do incorporate the tools, exactly as written, you are a [positive compliment], if you do not, you are a [negative epithet]. Also, there is an assumption that all of you (stupid) readers will wish to discard the book, once written, because you are lazy creatures of habit. Some of us incorporated the 'tools' the entire way through and the assumptions made as to the reading public en masse were unhelpful and insulting.Finally, real-life examples from writers can always be elucidating and helpful: these men however posit fairly pedestrian examples from their own lives as though they were illuminated scenarios from beyond (one of the authors was no longer intimidated by a friend of his, for example) but instead of suggesting that the reader find similar examples in his/her own life, we are supposed to be sufficiently moved by the author's description to use the tool. Again, this is a sort of stunning arrogance: the authors universalise a fairly specific (white, male, upper-middle class) life experience and assume we will be inspired therefrom rather than encouraging us to take a personal view.I'm sorry about this as some of these tools are illuminating (the reader is not allowed to pick and choose which ones might be intuitively right, however: we are exhorted to use them all for the rest of our lives -- or be lost forever!); and some are presented in a new and unique light. The tools can be useful. The patronising attitude towards the reader is not.

By far the best "self help" book I've ever read! I flew through it (and I have a five month old baby, with no extra time) because it makes so much sense. These tools are easily applicable to many behaviors that we want to change but don't know how. It's not a quick fix but by practicing the tools daily one can over time modify behavior. It's already helped my so much from expressing myself clearly to a rather condescending authority figure to conquering a couple fears that I tend to avoid. I've also used them to avoid arguments and worry. Do yourself the biggest favor. Buy the book. Read it. And do the tools everyday. Your life will be better than ever!!!

Just as they say in the book, don't bother if you are just looking for "magic" or a "quick fix". Change takes work but this book was very eye opening and will be life changing for me.Easy "tools" to use daily. Very well explained and made simple and easily adopted into daily life.I've been through it twice so far, took notes and adopted all the tools quickly. Again, life changing.But only if you are ready to be free.

I heard Phil Stutz mentioned on a Marc Maron WTF podcast, and later Maron had Stutz himself in for an interview. A fascinating conversation, listen to that (it's free) and you'll probably get a sense of whether this book and approach is for you or not. (Clearly it intrigued me.) This is good stuff, practical and to the point. "Tools" you can use if you know WHY you have a problem but need help FIXING it. (Something most therapists don't/can't do, seemingly.) Not sure what "school" of psychology I'd put Phil Stutz in, but-- and mind you, I'm only half way through-- it's already made me think and re-think some big stuff and I'm guessing this approach might work for me. And maybe a number of people. Check the Maron interview (warning, some of it's quite adult, with blunt, strong language.)

This review is for the audio version (posted originally on audible):This is a quick start guide on taxes for small businesses. There are specific examples and advice that help clarify some of the deductions that are available to small businesses. I don’t think it is substantial enough to do your own taxes off of, but that is why it is a quickstart guide. It presents a nice gentle lead into the deductions and rules. Always consult a tax professional or get them to do your taxes every few years after doing your own; or when vastly different rules are introduced. The value in the book is that it should allow you to have a less confusing conversation with a tax professional as you will at least have had a primer and should be able to understand the gist of the conversation. It also reminds people that if you do your own taxes you need to keep upto date on relevant tax rules as they are always changing. Additionally, I would recommend this to someone starting out with their own business, as it is better to know ahead of time what kind of records and receipts to keep and organize them accordingly, rather than waiting until tax time to tackle a mountain of receipts.The narration was good. Everything was clear and well paced.Full Disclosure: I received this book for free in exchange for my honest and unbiased review”

My husband and I own a new small business and I handle the finances. I have a few years of bookkeeping experience, but this added to my tax knowledge. I read the book in less than 2 hours and will move next to and more detailed small business tax book. This was and good foundation.

This book makes some valid points and clarifies a few things, but I expected it to be way longer and more detailed for some reason. I may have misunderstood the description but its really just one long chapter that took me about 30 minutes to get through, and it left me with even more questions.

A theological account of the Old Testament's Wisdom Literature is much needed in our time, and the authors have done a remarkable good rendering of such a theology for us. With a range and scope, with a host of good insights for our culture's suffering from fragmentation and alienation may be read upon the pages of this book. Especially enjoyable is their concerns for Poetry and the Arts in our times, times when because of all the split cultures produced by our post-modern historical critical methods with analytical methods of interpretation of 'things', we find it difficult to integrate 'things' into a practical and theoretical wholeness the Wisdom of which we may grasp for our times. This account is well worth reading by theological and science students today.Rev. John E. McKenna

Old Testament Wisdom Literature: A Theological Introduction by Craig G. Bartholomew and Ryan P. O’Dowd is a clear and accessible introduction to wisdom literature with a unique focus upon the theological contribution of the Old Testament books. The goal of the book is to open a conversation amongst readers towards an embrace and embodiment of the theology of the Old Testament wisdom literature today (p. 16). This is accomplished through rigorous engagement with the biblical text and interaction with both ancient and modern scholarship.Bartholomew and O’Dowd divide the focus of the book into three sections. Chapters 1-3 are an establishment of the context for the book, including an introduction to wisdom literature as wisdom, a survey of the world of ancient (i.e. Egypt, Mesopotamia, Israel, etc.), and the genre of poetry. These three chapters do well to achieve what they set out to accomplish, and everything else is captured in the recommended readings at the end of each chapter. Chapters 4-9 comprise the heart of the book and walk the reader through Proverbs, Ecclesiastes, and Job, offering a theological interpretation of each book, an overview of the reception of each book, and interaction with the biblical text throughout. Chapters 9-12 move the discussion towards a more fuller theology of the wisdom literature for today and examine the use of wisdom and wisdom literature in the New Testament.There is much to be praised about this volume. First, and probably foremost, Bartholomew and O’Dowd do an excellent job establishing the books in the ancient Near Eastern context. This allows the scope of the book to move beyond a typical introduction as the theological and hermeneutical considerations are developed. Second, each chapter concludes with a curated “recommended reading” section. This makes the book perfect for interested readers looking to adventure out on topics. In their new book Old Testament Wisdom Literature, Craig Bartholomew and Ryan O'Dowd present a theological introduction to the Bible's wisdom books—Proverbs, Job, and Ecclesiastes. How can one expect to find wisdom, and how can 21st century Christians apply 3,000-year-old Old Testament wisdom to their lives?SummaryChapters 1-3 bring us into (1) Israel's world of wisdom—they believed that they were in covenant with the one God who created all of reality and who was the source of knowledge. As Job expresses, they knew their knowledge was limited. The authors then tour through Egyptian and Mesopotamian wisdom to show Israel’s context. Chapter 3 makes a plea for poetry, which "gives us a nuanced understanding of people, language and culture" (51). Stating a mere proposition such as "God is omnipotent" is very different than "declaring that God rules 'the raging sea'" or that he can "draw in Leviathan with a hook" (69). Poetry brings imagery to the stories which make up our life. At 160 pages, Chapters 4-9 make up the core of the book. The authors spend two chapters on each of Proverbs, Job, and Ecclesiastes. In the first chapter on each book, rather than rehearsing the main gist of each book, they describe the book's theological function. Each book's second chapter ("Chapter B" as I call it) explores a particular theme in that book.Sometimes the text's form is just as important as what it says. The proverbs in Proverbs 10-30 come to us at random, just as these instances occur within life. Job and Ecclesiastes "focus on profound experiences of apparent contradictions to the character-consequence theme," which deepen our faith and our wisdom and form our character (285). The authors note, "Ecclesiastes is performatively enigmatic, just like suffering, and Job is long, at times tedious, with all those speeches, just like suffering" (318).Ecclesiastes "ultimately affirms life and joy... but only as the end result of a ferocious struggle with the brokenness of life" (189). Job presents bodily suffering; Ecclesiastes presents mental anguish. It's not enough to have a high IQ. Job had money. Qohelet asked difficult philosophical questions. But wisdom requires us to admit our finite creatureliness before the infinite Creator. We, like the woman in Proverbs 31, can embody wisdom and image God.Chapters 10 looks at wisdom in the NT through the coming of Jesus. Chapter 11 gives an OT theology of wisdom. Chapter 12 applies wisdom to our present life concerning education, politics, spirituality, the ordinary, and the dark night of the soul.Recommended?I greatly appreciated Bartholomew and O'Dowd's theological interpretation. The authors look at the meaning of the texts and what is really going on. Teacher and pastors would do well to read this book. This book presents many case stories of Milton Erickson's clinical practice. The case stories present different challenges and the various techniques that Milton Erickson uses to overcome them. I would recommend this book to anyone who is interested in learning about handling resistance in psychotherapy as well as anyone who is interested in learning about various uses of hypnotic phenomena.

Rather than a study of Erickson's language, this book looks at how he thought about what a client needed. A bigger picture than most books I have read.

A great exploration of the basic principles of this great thinker - clear concise writing and summation of some complex areas od Ericksonian practice.

A lot of books have been written about Milton Erickson. I was introduced to Erickson's work through the work of Bandler and Grinder, now known as NLP (I got my NLP trainer certificate in 1996). This book doesn't cover the modern NLP as I know it, nor does it cover the work of Steven Gilligan, but apart from that it includes a brief overview of frameworks that explain Erickson's Therapy and Hypnosis (e.g. Haley, Rossi, Lankton, Zeig, etc).Now you know what the book does and doesn't cover, let me tell you what it aims at. The author wants to make Erickson's work accessible and to unravel the underlying structure of Erickson's marvelous interventions, which were often beyond the comprehension of his students. The goal of the book is to offer the reader a set of patterns that will result in therapeutic interventions of the same style as those used by Erickson himself. It also includes principles, assumptions to be avoided and illustrates the whole with examples from Erickson himself.I think the author has done well on his goal, especially given the reputation of his subject. A native New Zealander, Frank A. Worsley served as a reserve officer in the Royal Navy before becoming captain of the Endurance. He commanded two ships in World War I, for which he was decorated, sailed with Shackleton again in 1921, and in 1925 was the joint leader of the British Arctic Exploration. Worsley died in 1943.

Often reading about polar explorers means only getting the view of the lead character, usually the "Boss" or the "Owner" of the expedition. These characters are in themselves well worth reading, but their fame often over shadows the other central figures who the expeditions could never have been made without. Worsley is such a figure. I enjoyed Worsley's relating of his own experience, modestly told, easy to read, and supplying the viewpoint of one of those central characters which puts so much more into the understanding of what the explorers were like as human beings. Shackleton often gets recognition for the great feat of the boat journey, as he should; he was an inspiring leader, but it was Frank Worsley's navigation in incredibly difficult conditions that got them to South Georgia.

An engrossing first person narrative by one of the 6 men that accomplished the amazing, hair-raising 800 mile voyage from Elephant Island to S. Georgia Island in an open life boat, in order to accomplish the rescue of Shackleton's men left standed on the former island after the almost-2-yr survival in the ice floes of the Antactic when the ship had become trapped then crushed & sunk. I have read many different accounts of the whole heroic venture of the Endurance, her crew, and selfless & inspiring leader--Sir Ernest Shackleton. Each account gives a different perspective, & it is interesting to be able to put them all together for a fuller picture of the whole mission. Along with it also goes the story of the Ross Sea Party that had their own drama unfolding on the other side of the Continent at the same time. The entire saga is amazing and thoroughly engrossing!Adding to the whole experience are the phenominal pictures taken and preserved by the expedition photographer, Frank Hurley--boy do these ever add to the drama! An amazing epic!

Captain Worsley is a very capable author and his diary of Shackleton's excursion is a must read for anyone interested in the story of the Endurance. I had already read Caroline Alexander and Alfred Lansings' books so I wasn't sure I would glean anything fresh from Worsley's book. I can say without a doubt that it adds another layer of depth and perspective to the infamous historical narrative I've fallen in love with. So, yes, you need to read it.

In the summer of 1914 Ernest Schackleton's ship Endurance became trapped in Antarctic ice in 53 degree below zero weather. The following winter, the ship was crushed and sank, leaving the crew to camp on the ice while eking out subsistence under unimaginable conditions. In April of 1916, the ice broke apart beneath their feet, and twenty eight men piled into the lifeboats they had rescued from the wreck of the Endurance.These hair raising events are not part of the story of Shackleton's Boat Journey, but simply the preamble, described in less than a page, that sets the stage for the real action that is to follow.The tale is told by F.A. Worsley, the Captain of the Endurance. And what a saga it is, as the entire crew barely makes it to Elephant Island and from there an advance party navigates across the raging, freezing ocean in a tiny boat, all the way to South Georgia Island, from which the balance of the crew are eventually rescued, without one man being lost.What these men endured is beyond belief, yet Worsley recounts it humbly, with understatement, and with considerable grace. Here is an example of his prose:"Squall by squall the wind grew fiercer and the sea heavier. Through a rift in the clouds the moon shone out on the stormy sea and for two minutes revealed the ghostly white uplands and glaciers of the island. Another squall blotted everything out. We heard whales blow right alongside. They may have been killers, but, whatever they were, a push from one of them would have capsized us. If they were killers we would have had a quicker end. Soon to our great relief they left us for some nobler quarry than dirty smelly little men in Burberry overalls".It is amazing that in the midst of a Herculean struggle for survival the author was able to take note of beauty in what must have been a living hell, and to describe it so elegantly. Here for example, is his description of icebergs, "All the strange fantastic shapes rose and fell in a stately cadence, with a rustling, whispering sound and hollow echoes to the thudding seas, clear green at the water line, shading to a deep dark blue far below, all snowy purity and cool blue shadows above".This combination of gripping action and poetic insight makes for a richly rewarding read.Highly recommended.

One of the best books on history and leadership I've ever read. Many people are aware of the fate of the Endurance and Shackleton's voyage to save his men but few know of the details. This book, written by Worsley, tells those details in a fairly concise manner. Worsley was the Captain of the Endurance and accompanied Shackleton on the 800 mile open boat voyage to South Georgia. Worsley was clearly an intelligent man but not a writer. His writing style shows the reality of the danger without the excessive drama some authors would add. The book reveals the great danger and harsh conditions faced by the six men in that 22' boat. It also gives the reader insight into the intelligence and skill possessed by those dedicated sailors. Those men were tough, strong, brave and smart. The book is a quick read and I couldn't put it down. This book should be mandatory reading for anyone in a leadership role.

While I wholeheartedly recommend reading F. A. Worsley's account, I do not recommend buying The Narrative Press version because it doesn't have a single map anywhere inside. Every other publication of this account I have seen has at least a small, simple b&w depiction of the incredible, odds-defying voyage these men undertook. I mean really, TNP, no map for a story of a heroic expedition covering vast nautical distances? For a company which boasts of printing "high-quality," first-hand accounts of exploration, this is pretty sad.

I was excited to see a book that encompassed all that Orlando has to offer. Unfortunately, the author spent the first two chapters talking about how horrible Disney is for owning a business and bemoaning the fact that people go there. I really just wanted an overview of the WDW property- leave the snarkiness aside. None of that surfaced with the other entries (which I might add are also in the amusement park business. None of them do it out of the kindness of their hearts.) I wish the WDW parts were as informative and brief as the rest.

Gave us the inside info we needed to plan our trip to Orlando including Disney theme parks, Universal, and Sea world plus other attractions. Helped us make decisions on lodging , ticketing, and eating out based on what we like and the amount of time we have to make for a thrilling yet peaceful vacation. Well worth the cost of the book. Would recommend getting it a year in advance for planning then making reservations between 6 to 12 months before going.

So sure, this looked good. Based on reviews, it looked great! And I was getting it through my Vine account, it seemed worth my time. Boy was I wrong.Read the first couple pages. It feels as though it were a 12 year olds first stab at writing. No subject matter can get past bad, corny writing. I'm not a literary critic, don't pretend to be and don't play one on TV. But brother, stick to being a FBI agent and get a ghost writer.Couldn't finish it. And that's saying a lot from me.

Robert Wittman, with aide of John Shiffman, weaves a very detailed memoir that is captivating and incredibly informative. This is a must read for anyone interested the FBI's development and interest in recovering stolen art over the decades.Often times people take jobs in the public sector, spend a lifetime providing service and then retire. Everyone can say they left a mark in their own field and implemented changes that made the job for the next person more fluid, simpler or more efficient, but not everyone can say what Wittman has done. Robert Wittman through good fortune and solid investigative work and 'proper salesmanship' in the field slowly built a career not only for himself but a place for others to hopefully follow.Bob Wittman, AKA Bob Clay, undercover Art Dealer for an 'unnamed client' with a hefty checkbook, spent twenty years chasing down leads, setting up meetings in out-of-the-way darkened places, stings and apprehending a long list of people who ventured into Art Crime. Some were dangerous, others were probably more vacuous and obnoxious than dangerous, but still trouble all the same.The best part of the story that unfolds is learning that at one point the FBI gave Bob the leeway needed to see these cases through, recapture lost art and artifacts and take the lead with other Agents to generate success recovering paintings, lost swords, stolen battleflags and other antiquities. The worst part is learning by the end of the book that, like with all bureaucracies who become obsessed with core issues, the FBI supposedly lost interest in drafting a line item budget in their annual reserve policies for Bob's Art Crime Department. Perhaps if more money had been spent on the West Coast, Marion True would've been shut down years prior over at the Getty Center in Los Angeles … but that's another story.In reading the reviews, yes, I always do … I can see that Bob is unfairly taking a lot of flak for a portion of his writing style. Some readers come away a little turned off by what appears to be an oversized ego, but the truth is that when you're the first person to do something, anything you say is likely to come off that way. While Bob wasn't necessarily the first person to come along and do what he did with the FBI, he was likely the first to make a distinguished career out of it, go undercover and build an interest with FBI so they would create entire Departments which then made it able to frame the FBI in a favourable light for the recoveries. Bob Wittman does write a lot of “I did this” and “I did that” sentences, but having to protect other agents parts in cases is a part of it and the material should be read with such consideration.Some people never see the value in history or in art, but will quickly sign the permission slip to let their kids visit a museum for a field trip outing with their elementary school. Common sense can skip a generation (sometimes two) and that's okay. A good number of people understand the significance of what art and antiquities hold, and what it means about our own past.Bob Wittman's narrative of his case files make for good reading, thoughtful consideration and a warning to ne'er-do-wells who think ripping priceless art off the walls of sleepy half-forgotten museums can be profitable. Nine times out of ten you're likely going to be reselling the works to an undercover agent. So, the real lesson is clear – unless you're going to hang the stuff in your own two story home to look at and tell your neighbors it's a fake, decade after decade – don't even think about it.Five Stars. I don't normally write reviews, but this book is worth a special mention. I like learning new information in an entertaining way. This book fulfills that need. We learn about the history of the artifacts that Mr. Wittman went undercover to try to recover, along with the techniques necessary to catch the bad guys. The story takes us to exotic locales and we meet fascinating characters along the way.I think it would enhance the book if it were illustrated. It would be easy to add pictures of the stolen items that Mr. Wittman tried to recover.If you enjoy art history or true crime stories, I recommend that you read this book!

I liked this book for several reasons.1) the authors didn't just write about the theft of paintings, but also of artifacts such as an American Indian headress and historically important Civil War relics.2) not only did they write about the actual crime, but gave important backstory information about each theft and the players involved.3) while Wittman created, promoted and worked as the FBI's art theft division lead, he relates the struggles to keep it vital and working through his tenure touching on the evolution of the bureaucratic mess it has become.4) the Gardner theft case is the underlying theft case in the story, and the authors provide updates on the years of repeated attempts to locate the paintings to no avail.I encourage anyone interested in reading about art crime to give this book a read.

I heard this guy interviewed on NPR and immediately got the book. The heists and investigations he recounts are riveting; many are familiar from news stories. I was astonished at the pathetic security implemented at major galleries around the world. In many cases the thefts were childishly easy, including one escape on a bicycleHis writing stye is very solidly in the "There-I-was up to my neck...." mould, which gets pretty tedious. One chapter begins with " I reflected on all I had a accomplished in my long career......." so he's not short on ego. He could have benefited from a ghost writer but its still a great read.

Former FBI agent Robert Wittman calls on his professional experience, his personal passions, and his unique cultural upbringing to bring to the reader a well crafted account about how a one time salesman joined the FBI in his 30's to becomes the godfather of the FBI Art Team.Every chapter or so tells of a different case he worked, combining the case itself with his own personal history, in order to bring the reader a very personal, although not overly sentimental, account of the crimes he solved and how he solved them.The nice part is that Wittman is honest, to the point, and not afraid to show his own flaws. In other words, he doesn't write himself as a hero worthy of adoration. Instead, he describes his own perspectives, successes, and failures in a way so humble that the reader can't help but identify with him.It is well written. It is easy to read. It is a great story of one man set against the backdrop of cultural history. A fantastic book.
