My expectations for this book were not too high given that an active football manager has a lot to lose by being too candid. Also, I was expecting the book to focus more on drama rather than details about training methods and tactics. But I was pleasantly surprised to see how forthcoming Pep has been about his relationship with the club management at Barcelona and Bayern, about his views on certain players (and vice versa), and his training routines and tactical approaches.The book follows events chronologically, from Pep's signing with Bayern to the DFB Pokal final against Dortmund in May 2014. It gives a rather detailed account of how Pep wished to change the team and his general philosophy about football (developing a playing style to suit the players, his desire for his teams to control the game, his hatred of tiki-taka). There is also much discussion about the Bayern players (a lot about Lahm and Højberg), other team staff and the Bayern club management. What the book touches only on the surface are some of the more gossip-worthy topics: Uli Hoeneß and his tax problems, the deterioration in the relationship between Pep and Mandzukic, Kroos' contract talks. It also stops short of pointing out individual players who did not see eye-to-eye with Pep's tactics.The big surprise for me was the level of tactical detail offered for each game (including the major Champions League games). There is also plenty of material on the introduction of new training methods and some on players' diets as well. The tactics are discussed to the point where an avid fan will be interested, and is not a coaching manual.One thing to note is that the book portrays a highly positive image of Pep, which some might be put off by, but I find quite accurate based on my own fanatical following of Bayern's progress over the years. It also dispels a lot of the myths circulating in the media (Pep is turning Bayern into Barcelona, Heynckes was forced into retirement, Pep does not like Robben). I'm a Bayern fan, and a Pep fan now only by association (though I always respected him), but my own opinion of the man has certainly grown after reading this book.To sum up, this book is a fascinating read. Bayern and Pep fans will certainly enjoy it, and there is plenty of material for any avid football fan.

The kind of access that the author managed to get is unprecedented in the history of football. I am not sure what made Pep and the Bayern's senior management allowed such access but whatever the reasons, the result make a very interesting reading.As a Bayern fan I liked the insights into and the dynamics of the Bayern's management - how the club is run, how key decisions are made and who actually hold the real power. These insights are often very surprising and we learn in particular Rummeniege, Sammer and Hoeness provide Pep with very strong support and stand by him during good and bad times. We also learn a lot about the players and their personalities.The book focuses a lot on Pep as a person and his coaching principles and ideas. We also learn his non sporting side as we as his family and close friends. I found it rather fascinating that Pep has some very interesting friends such as top professors, world chess champions, etc. He comes across as someone complex, passionate and utterly devoted to football.The book also reveals quite of lot of the thinking, planning and also post match tactical analyses of many Bundesliga matches as well as the Champions' League games. Here we learn much about Pep's thinking and his playing and coaching principles.However on the flip side, the book side steps some key issues and incidents. It is no secret that Pep has some major disagreements with some key players. While we like to know about Pep and his philosophy, there were too many pages devoted to the "genius" of Pep and at times the author sound like some teenager with a serious crush on his idol.While the author generally knowledgeable about football, his tends to just report whatever Pep was saying, rather than try to explain what these mean to the general reader using diagrams to explain the tactics. As a result, a general reader without much exposure to football tactics will be lost in the tactics discussion.Lastly, I noticed numerous grammatical and spelling errors.

One became immersed in the book in order to try and learn what special methodology he has applied both in Spain and now in Germany.It is reveled that his secret to success if not that unusual. He works himself, his coaches and players to death. There seems to be no secret as to why he left Barcelona and spent some time away from the game. He had to be exhausted.The book covers his life away from soccer and his involvement off the field seems as intense as that on the pitch. He would be as well-rounded off the field as one could be in light of the pressure environments he has found himself in.Having been involved in viewing Champions League play while reading the book, Pep' 2015 Bayern Munich team obviously couldn't overcome a series of both injuries and not having a Messi on its roster.Finally while the author tries to describe Guardiola's tactical plans, he failed to recognize that pictures/diagrams are worth more than words. Diagramming each formation and where players were located in them would have aided greatly. Having coached the sport for over 30 years, I could understand the descriptive language used in revealing Pep's tactical plans. But I am not certain all readers did.

A fantastic collection of entertaining and education experiments!I voluntarily read an advanced copy.

I will forever be grateful that I found a review of this book in my local newspaper and immediately ordered it from Amazon. I have an M.S. in Curriculum & Instruction and am a homeschooler with three teenage daughters (14, 15, 16). The scariest part of doing middle school homeschool for me has always been the Chemistry block. With my two oldest daughters we did Nutrition (sugars, fats, oils, proteins, etc) but I knew in my heart that we hadn't done "real Chemistry."This year I was determined to do it correctly and so I shelled out big bucks for a CHEM C3000.Then I found this book and we have done every single chapter from it, loved it, and the "official kit" is languishing dusty on a shelf. This book is written in a really kid-friendly way but it goes deep. The experiments are well organized and not too hard to make happen. (Note: the chapters build on one another so don't just skip around.) And Theodore Gray's fantastic elements deck is a perfect complement to this book.From the first Hydrogen experiment, where we went out to the sidewalk with a meter stick and a piece of chalk and measured and walked the distance from the sole proton in Hydrogen's nucleus all the way out to its sole electron TO SCALE, I knew this book had found a different way to present Chemistry to kids. This book is super-hands on and fun while maintaining academic rigor. I am so grateful to Sean Connolly for writing it and I can't wait to read more of his work!!!

A nice, easy read that holds your attention, especially when read chapter to chapter over a semester. They covered quite a but if material, giving actual examples and references without getting dry.

This is quite a book. The sheer amount of information is enough to bowl me over Regarding stars. It didn't get five stars because the beginning of the book was quite dry. It got more than three stars because it was quite interesting from the Civil War on. (I've been to some of these places, maybe that helps.) The book gallops along from one topic to the next and contains an incredible amount of information for the size of the book. it's a good starting place to study the history of Oklahoma. I would recommend this book to all Oklahomans, history buffs, and travel enthusiasts. Maybe someday I'll drive down that road myself. I'll be sure to bring this book along.

Oklahoma history buffs--especially those interested in the history of the eastern side of the state---will enjoy reading this book. There was much more information on the Osage Trace and Texas Road than is included in an Oklahoma History text book.

The author wrote an interesting, historically accurate book.

DirectX is difficult to master. Even drilling down into just D3D is exceptionally challenging for most students. I have been looking for a DX book to use on an undergraduate course and in the process I have reviewd a few. While most books have something to offer few have drawn the whole of any of the DX modules together. Given the standard of the SDK documentation there is a clear need for good textbooks. My reaction to the present text is that it is very unsutiable for beginners. In the first place, it is not well written. Secondly,some of the code is way beyond what beginners could grasp and there is very little hand holding to reassure pedagogues like me. Thirdly, the material of matrices could do with being looked at again. However, it is not all gloom. The chapter on animation is really very good and well worth spending the time on.All too frequently we see computer programming texts come out without proper regard for the readership. Occasionally the reading public have the right to expect publishers to get material out there that was written to be read by others. I don't blame the authors, but the publishers who don't put enough editorial weight behind their offerings. I have no doubt but that this book could have been a much more useful book with appropriate editorial input. May be the 3rd edition will be.

This Book focuses on DirectX applications. if you ever tried writting your own vertices , planes ,....etc. this is the book you need to use the already built in features of Direct-X , even if you are an OPEN_GL programmer. i mixed the structures and data types in DirectX with the existing Open GL programs to reduce the code. i feel sorry i did not read this book before, it is like reading the mind of a graphics programmer and tell you what you need in the next page. i recommend this book for any one started programming 3D and wants to make a quick advance or wants to modify the macaroni codes he created and wants to simplify it extreamly and get a better performance (both Direct3D or Open GL).reagrdsJunk Man

This book covers the usage of DirectX 9.0. Note, this book is not a cook-book type book where it tells you how to program a game in DirectX 9.0.I would not buy this book again (ie future version/revision).

I've been waiting a long time for a book like this. I'm a Unix software developer by profession, but only a hobbyist when it comes to PC game programming. Back in the good old days, before Windows and DirectX/DirectWhatever, it was possible for us casual programmers to keep up with the technology and have fun experimenting with graphics and game programming. I simply lost interest when the complexity of the operating system and video hardware started getting in the way.I've been searching for a good book on Direct3D graphics programming for years and finally found one that delivers what it promises. Wolfgang Engel, the author, obviously understands how frustrating the learning process can be. The content of this book is masterfully structured to give the reader a solid understanding of everything you need to know. It's friendly, informal, humorous, and focused. It's a big book, but it reads fast, and keeps you interested.The author assumes you know C and maybe a little C++. That's about the only prerequisite you'll need to understand the material

This is a great book with which to learn directx 9; it introduces the new shader abilities of directx. the only downside is that this book is only useful if you have a good background in C programming or better yet c++, not to mention the fact that this 2nd edition doesn't have the original chapters from the 1st edition about physics and collision detection by Amir Geva. if you know C, this is the book for you if you want to get started with direct3D without delving too deep into windows programming and general directx programming

I am a totally beginning programmer, I've only taken 1 & 1/2 programming classes so far. Like the guy below me said, it isn't enough to write a game, but it's gives you a good enough understand to start your own valuable research on the topic. The author lists many really good sites to start with. Also, the section on setting up your compiler is CRUCIAL and I have never been able to get it working before now. The cd as well has some good stuff on it.

In one of the examples you can fly around with two space ships ... both are turned with a quaternion.If you see the shader driven character engine, your yaw will drop like mine.Grab it, buy it, read it. This one maximizes your direct3d knowledge.

This is the best introduction to Direct3D that I've seen in a book. Engel starts from the gound up, starting from very basic examples to a full-blown character engine with vertex and pixel shader support.My advice: A must to any c++ programmer who wants to start programming games.
